ryanckulp··on Why I’m Leaving San Francisco: Meta study
i lived in the brand-new Trinity tower on 8th / Mission. leaving my apartment each morning for work i saw... 5-12 broken car windows along 8th outside the hotel. despicable.

one could argue a robbed car at 2am is not a safety issue (if nobody is in the car), but i somewhat agree with the broken window theory.

the first day i bought a new bicycle and parked/locked it outside the big mall on Market, in front of 2 security guards, my seat was stolen within 30 minutes.

etc etc. presence of crime == less safe.

ahh the plot thickens. maybe a lot of people leave SF because they support Trump and want more of that. (doesn't exactly explain high NYC frequency, which is also liberal), but i like it
ryanckulp··on Why I’m Leaving San Francisco: Meta study
if author saw my previous comment re adopting a "proper case" toggle view, they could have given me the benefit of the doubt. i definitely want people to read in a format comfortable for them. i also know which rules don't matter
ryanckulp··on Why I’m Leaving San Francisco: Meta study
good idea. has anyone ever moved to SF without either 0 prospects OR 13 offers from Google et al?
ryanckulp··on Why I’m Leaving San Francisco: Meta study
totes - i did all this in < 4 hours but would love to read a more thorough analysis
ryanckulp··on Why I’m Leaving San Francisco: Meta study
after hitting publish i acknowledged another opp: “goodbye {{ other city }}” posts. meta meta.

perhaps as many people leave nyc, for example, but only the SF posts get shared

ryanckulp··on Why I’m Leaving San Francisco: Meta study
it’s tricky cuz i still capitalize proper nouns e.g. San Francisco.

i do have css for down-casing title etc however

ryanckulp··on Why I’m Leaving San Francisco: Meta study
i wrote this with “just graduated from X bootcamp and will be starting a new job as a jr developer” type commentary in mind.

totally valid criticism tho

ryanckulp··on Why I’m Leaving San Francisco: Meta study
amazing. maybe i’ll turn this into a toggle on all my posts
ryanckulp··on Show HN: Honestmarketer.com, where ethical marketers learn to sell
hi folks, stoked to launch this today. it's a 100% free resource, powered by our team at Fomo.com.

marketers are getting a bad rep (for good reason) and we want to start shifting the paradigm that "marketing == lying."

ryanckulp··on How I beat an online scammer and made $2,100 in the process
i find CC chargebacks (for us, they're via Stripe) more likely to win than PayPal tbh. and often w/ CC chargeback an accountant simply wasn't aware, mistakenly filed. PayPal, otoh, is often used by people with bad intentions on Day 0.
ryanckulp··on How I beat an online scammer and made $2,100 in the process
this was PayPal USA, i'm an American.
ryanckulp··on How I beat an online scammer and made $2,100 in the process

thanks for the support and feedback.

one book i recall is The Elements of Style, often called Strunk & White: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Elements_of_Style

otherwise i've not studied writing per se, just "practice" a lot in blog posts like this one.

my shtick is to add humor, remove qualifiers, stay conversational. all tips real writers would share too, but maybe not the same writers. ;)

ryanckulp··on Ask HN: One-person SaaS apps that are profitable?
Lobiloo (https://www.lobiloo.com) is an invoicing tool exclusively for florists.

i acquired it from a florist about 1.5 years ago and have been going deep on the industry ever since.

my challenge is (obviously) not having domain expertise, but i compensate by listening to customers, getting feedback from the former owner (now a lifetime user), and doing what i do: hack.

ryanckulp··on Ask HN: How do you control your diet while working at a tech company?
i'm writing a book about this actually, and giving away some free copies... fitnessforhackers.com

even folks who buy it, get a 100% refund in exchange for progress pics.

ryanckulp··on Show HN: Your Spot in the Startup Caste System
maybe this is harsh. idk. but am i the only one who senses caste system > ecosystem?
ryanckulp··on Show HN: Spreadsheet of 1,847 stolen online courses and how to fix it
hi everyone, i was stolen from last weekend by a scammer who bought my course, listed it for sale on his "group buying" site, then filed a chargeback.

i put everything i know in this spreadsheet; tldr you can email the website admins and they'll remove your course.

ryanckulp··on Ask HN: What is an example of a super simple SaaS that is profitable?
yep, you can do this with Fomo(.com) as well.
ryanckulp··on Ask HN: What is an example of a super simple SaaS that is profitable?
thank you. we actually acquired a Shopify app, which already had some customers via organic app store traffic.

ryanckulp··on Ask HN: What is an example of a super simple SaaS that is profitable?
many of our competitors do allow customers to plug in fake data, it's sad + illegal + gives the space a bad rep. sigh.

this is why we aggressively build native integrations, sometimes 1 per week. deters bad actors.

ryanckulp··on Ask HN: What is an example of a super simple SaaS that is profitable?
hey, the 11k figure is active websites. you can verify all this via our Open API: https://fomo.com/open

since a customer can have unlimited websites per plan, we actually have around 5,500-6,000 customers. many will add a personal site and a company site, or an ecommerce store and a blog.

yes, older customers have plans as low as $8-12 /month. good times.

ryanckulp··on Ask HN: What is an example of a super simple SaaS that is profitable?
thanks for the feedback.

this homepage is actually our 3rd and probably most abstract implementation.

1st, 2016: https://web.archive.org/web/20161108025452/https://www.usefo...

2nd, 2017/2018: https://web.archive.org/web/20190107040431/https://fomo.com/

indeed, the numbers speak for themselves. over the last few weeks since deploying we saw lower signup conversion rates. but, we also have a few product launches forthcoming.

balancing between "be short and to the point" and sharing a vision is perhaps more art than science, and that's why we have so much art on our website.
