ryan93··on U.S. Rep. Angie Craig drops college requirement for staffers
Selection effects are unimaginably strong on this subject.
ryan93··on U.S. Rep. Angie Craig drops college requirement for staffers
the solution is just to fire bad cops. The future bad cops will get the picture. no way to really pre screen cops other than keeping out known criminals.
ryan93··on What Rosalind Franklin contributed to the discovery of DNA’s structure
Or they would lose standing among their peers. All whites aren't in some secret club where we coordinate.
ryan93··on CATL has announced a new “condensed” battery with 500 Wh/kg
It is literally insane how much oil there is. Planes use i think less than 10% of world oil consumption.
ryan93··on Walmart Announces Closure of Four Chicago Stores
A lot of big city walmarts are too small to be profitable at their prices. Also people say shoplifting but walmart hasnt confirmed.
ryan93··on American IQ scores have rapidly dropped, proving the 'Reverse Flynn effect'
I mean LOL at comparing citations. http://libgen.rs/search.php?req=Arthur+R.+Jensen&column=auth... This is a good start. These books engage directly with the great bulk of modern IQ research.
ryan93··on American IQ scores have rapidly dropped, proving the 'Reverse Flynn effect'
Gould is right that the people he discuss were racist. But you shouldn't use his book as an argument against modern psychometrics since it doesn't deal with that much at al. In actuality Jensen's reputation has improved while Gould's has declined.
ryan93··on Anthropic’s $5B, 4-year plan to take on OpenAI
GPT4 is really bad at writing. It is noticeably generic.
ryan93··on American IQ scores have rapidly dropped, proving the 'Reverse Flynn effect'
Weird that that whole book is spent arguing against guys who worked like 120 years ago instead of confronting the voluminous modern work. "Of all the book's references, a full 27 percent precede 1900. Another 44 percent fall between 1900 and 1950 (60 percent of those are before 1925); and only 29 percent are more recent than 1950. From the total literature spanning more than a century, the few "bad apples" have been hand-picked most aptly to serve Gould's purpose." https://www.debunker.com/texts/jensen.html

American white students at public schools do incredibly well on the international PISA test. Most private schools aren’t competitive and there aren’t many students in them.
ryan93··on The case for banning children from social media
Seems like the thing to do is just ban phones in schools. The authority is already there and you can see what affect it has.
ryan93··on Apple halted M2 chip production in January amid 'plummeting' Mac sales
Not actually that common for teachers to work two jobs. Also most americans have healthcare and the ones who dont are often young and dont consume much of it. Not saying its good. But some europeans think we live in some kind of mad max hellscape.
ryan93··on In supermarkets across Europe, inflation is leading to a surge in food theft
Evidence of destitution in England? The basics are very cheap, even the "poor" there just want prepackaged food.
ryan93··on In supermarkets across Europe, inflation is leading to a surge in food theft
Feel free to move to one of the countries without many rich.
ryan93··on When did New York start building slowly?
If you read the article you would see that the unions are the ones demanding a much larger than necessary number of employees. The unions are the political road block to change.
ryan93··on Supreme Court asked to strike down immunity for police who brutally beat student
That actually perfectly describes the behavior of lower class predators(of all races!) who destroy their communities with violence and drugs
ryan93··on More students are turning away from college and toward apprenticeships
Id be surprised if 5% of college students "grow their souls" weirdly clueless thing to write. Not hard to find out that most people get business, psych and econ degrees. And even english or history majors half ass it just to get through.
ryan93··on Silicon Valley, once the underdog, is now too big to fail
maybe i underestimated the number of calcanis types.
ryan93··on Silicon Valley, once the underdog, is now too big to fail
I mean they would have recovered 80-90+ percent of their assets without government support. Plus many would have been back stopped by VC. People are really reading a lot into the whining coming from Jason calcanis types
ryan93··on Rivian in talks with Amazon to remove exclusivity clause of EV van agreement
I mean yeah. it looks fun
ryan93··on Rivian in talks with Amazon to remove exclusivity clause of EV van agreement
It’s a toy. Seems like you are advertising for them.
ryan93··on Graduate students at the University of Southern California have won a union
They technically pay it out of funds given to the university
ryan93··on Georgia nuclear plant begins splitting atoms
If solar and wind are better then thats what we should do. I wish though that even 1 of the many many trillions in debt we racked up went to nuclear plants. we could have had dozens of plants. prices would probably have gone done if there was a large supply chain and workforce after the first few plants
ryan93··on Do no harm: can school mental health interventions cause iatrogenic harm? [pdf]
An aside. I think people care about speed. An MIT degree finished in four years is more impressive than one finished in 8
ryan93··on Do no harm: can school mental health interventions cause iatrogenic harm? [pdf]
Basically every test has a time limit in school. No one save a small number of learning disabled kids struggles to finish in time. If it takes you the whole time you don't know it!
ryan93··on Dropping the SAT requirement is a luxury belief
Legacy acceptances rates at Princeton are close to ten percent. Kids who get in to those schools often have high GPAs and test scores without tutors.
ryan93··on Starbucks illegally fired US workers over union, judge rules
I support unions no question. Kind of weird though that there is no overlap pretty much between those who can start companies and those who want companies to share the wealth. There are millions of companies and basically none split profit equally.
ryan93··on France's baby bust
Where will smart africans go if there is not a west? Asia is pretty anti immigrant. South america is poor. Arab nations are repressive.
ryan93··on Margaret Hamilton’s role on the guidance computer
She did not run the team until her husband promoted her to the role after the work was done. By her own admission she was working on beginner stuff in 1965. The popular claim that she was THE main person on the project is complete nonsense.
ryan93··on Apple's Popularity with Gen Z Poses Challenges for Android
By her own admission she was on an unimportant part of the project when she joined in 1965. She was recorded working on completely unrelated stuff in 63. When she was actually promoted to leadership the work was already done
