ryan93··on Why Socialism? (1949)
I looked. Its an absurdly small fraction of what europe and america have gotten historically.
ryan93··on Why Socialism? (1949)
Revealed preference is that people move to countries with free speech
ryan93··on West Virginia University to drop 32 majors including all world language programs
Thatcher on the one hand Nazis and centuries of colonization on the other. I’ll take it
ryan93··on West Virginia University to drop 32 majors including all world language programs
How do people not understand selection? Regardless think of all the world’s warmongers. Almost none were engineers. All the colonizers were humanities guys. Hitler and his top guys were art and humanities guys. Every president who bombs the innocent has been a history or poli sci major.
ryan93··on First new US nuclear reactor in decades enters commercial operation in Georgia
So to power every home in the USA would roughly cost 3 trillion at these prices. if they reused the same teams and designs maybe they could get it somewhat cheaper. plus we have increasing renewable plus existing hydro and nuclear. for the price of a year or two of national debt we could go full renewable in this country.
ryan93··on Greed and Excess Drive the Climate Crisis, So Why Aren’t They Being Questioned?
Also most energy use is by your avg consumer heating cooling and consuming. Yachts and private jets are marginal.
ryan93··on Tesla’s Dieselgate
What would martin eberhard who left years before model S know about musk and his contributions to engineering decisions at tesla?
ryan93··on Huge phosphate rock deposit discovered in Norway
You are exaggerating. but there is definitely more to find. some of the largest mines are just like the first place they started digging without any modern exploration techniques. Mostly doesn't matter. humans will run out at some point of critical materials.
ryan93··on 43% of white Harvard students are legacy, athlete, or donor/staff related (2019)
there is basically no overlap between the people on admissions committees and conservatives. Look up on linkedin who does admissions at ivy league schools. Hint its not stuffy old white guys.
ryan93··on Supreme Court strikes down affirmative action in college admissions
public schools are very well funded. at the low performing ones the kids just arent doing the work.
ryan93··on Supreme Court strikes down affirmative action in college admissions
Thomas was anti affirmative action going back 50 years to when he graduated from yale law. he grew up very poor.
ryan93··on $900k Median Package for Engineers at OpenAI
I don't understand why people think sam has magic powers. He started one failed company and has no technical ability to make openai into anything more than it is.
ryan93··on San Francisco fire chief fed up with robotaxis that mess with her firetrucks
You won’t even lose your license for killing people or multiple DUIs
ryan93··on Power companies fight Maine’s proposed non-profit utility
Why don't you provide that service profit free then. People on this stuff are always all talk. Id be interested in people demonstrating a world with no profit on a smaller scale first. Why not run a company where every one gets paid the same and demonstrate your competence.
ryan93··on Deep Learning’s Diminishing Returns (2021)
One month of nyc carbon is no big deal. Once a model is trained using it is much much cheaper
ryan93··on Amount of work that once bought an hour of light now buys 51 years of it (2017)
If there was no restriction on what or where you could build that would change. Everyone can afford food in the US. Google “rice and beans”
ryan93··on The planning of U.S. physician shortages (2020)
Most specialists in the US can see you in well under two months.
ryan93··on U.S. Depression Rates Reach New Highs
Strong claim. Bet it has more to do with trends like polarization or housing costs or something. Most corporations are providing absurdly cheap goods and decent jobs.
ryan93··on UK: No-fault evictions to be banned in reform of rental sector
That right should be funded by the taxpayer. Also if it was a right it wouldn’t be so difficult to build new housing in England. Rights talk is so tedious.
ryan93··on UK: No-fault evictions to be banned in reform of rental sector
I think its obvious the state should be willing to take on the risk if they are gonna take away property rights.
ryan93··on UK: No-fault evictions to be banned in reform of rental sector
England should do the honorable thing and buy out all these landlords and administer the homes themselves. If the taxpayer wants to subsidize housing it should be done directly.
ryan93··on Anthropic's 100k context is now available in the web UI
The current social indicators of race make sense. As youd expect since african americans are about 20% european admixture their IQs are inbetween whites and africans. Also the flynn effect is most likely not a real gain in intelligence http://iapsych.com/articles/pietschnig2015.pdf

ryan93··on The 1% of the population accountable for 63 % of all violent crime convictions (2013)
I think you will find that racists will be okay with basically any immigration restriction. Its like people arguing back with anti affirmative action people that legacy admissions are unfair. Well they would happily give up a benefit they will never receive to get what they want!
ryan93··on Can GPT pass my programming courses?
Humans made unimaginable progress in the last 150ish years. Many of those who contribute were raised on farms or taught in third world countries. What magic system are you envisioning that could do better than what got us to the moon?
ryan93··on Language models can explain neurons in language models
If AI can exist humans have to figure it out. It’s what we do. Really shockingly delusional to think people are gonna use chatgpt for a few min get bored and then ban it like it’s a nuke. I’d rather the USA get it first anyways.
ryan93··on Language models can explain neurons in language models
People won't care until an actually scary AI exists. Will be easy to stop at that point. Or you can just stop research here and hope another country doesn't get one first. Im personally skeptical it will exist. Honestly might be making it worse with the scaremongering coming from uncharismatic AI alignment people.
ryan93··on Students can’t get off their phones. Schools have had enough
Parents can be histrionic. Thats good, your kids are important. Doesn't mean the administration cant decide phones are almost entirely a net negative.
ryan93··on U.S. Hits Z-Library with New Domain Name Seizures
Sad. I pirate 100% of my books. After i read them i purchase the physical copy. I buy more books when i can try them first! Its also enjoyable to have it open on your computer for when you have a moment.
ryan93··on Geoffrey Hinton leaves Google and warns of danger ahead
No one is uniquely positioned. Literally no one knows how powerful it will get.
