Sorting by date I see 2 additions to the table on 2020-07-21.
rwbhn··on Crispr gene editing in human embryos wreaks chromosomal mayhem
FTA: Previous work using CRISPR in mouse embryos and other kinds of human cell had already demonstrated that editing chromosomes can cause large, unwanted effects.

rwbhn··on Ask HN: How do you RSS?
Reading this via Feedly on Android. For audio podcasts when I'm biking I use BeyondPod Pro [1] - tried a bunch of options, it was the only one I found which reliably downloads episodes while on wifi and plays them with no issue while offline.

rwbhn··on Ask HN: Is working as a developer on technical route until retirement feasible?
57 and been writing software almost my entire career. Brief foray into mgmt, 15 years ago. Saw the error of my ways and went back to straight dev work. See no reason that will change.

So, yes. Just make sure companies you work for have a strong technical career track.

rwbhn··on George Floyd died of asphyxia, private autopsy finds
Per the current contents of that link, he is now a _former_ deputy.
rwbhn··on Organ donation in England has moved to an opt-out system
Current title of the linked article: "Organ donation law in England has changed".
rwbhn··on Senator Blumenthal Mad That Zoom Not Offering the Encryption His Law Will Outlaw
I believe the poster meant "effectively lifetime appointments". Some relevant stats: https://www.opensecrets.org/overview/reelect.php
rwbhn··on Instacart’s gig workers are planning a nationwide strike
Work for a hospital system in Boston and can confirm - testing guidelines here remain quite strict.
rwbhn··on Netflix to cut streaming quality in Europe for 30 days
Rolling out that tech has got to be more expensive than checking the load first.
rwbhn··on App Used to Tabulate Votes Is Said to Have Been Inadequately Tested
It gets worse! From updated story at same url (so annoying!) "Workers were reportedly expected to download a file to their Android phones, enable a setting that allows for the installation of apps from untrusted sources, and then bypass prompts warning that doing so could cause a security breach."

I know nothing about the app itself, but clearly the process around deploying it was a fiasco. We really need competent people running elections.

rwbhn··on App Used to Tabulate Votes Is Said to Have Been Inadequately Tested
Most states don't even have caucuses, just more traditional primaries. I'm pretty confident this app is quite specific to the (democratic - republican process is different) caucuses in Iowa.
rwbhn··on App Used to Tabulate Votes Is Said to Have Been Inadequately Tested
Lots of good posts out there about why electronic voting (w/out a paper trail) is a bad idea. Here's one: https://www.markpack.org.uk/160622/why-electronic-voting-is-...
rwbhn··on App Used to Tabulate Votes Is Said to Have Been Inadequately Tested
From story in the Guardian [1] "State party officials had said they would not be sending the new mobile app to precinct chairs for downloading until just before the caucuses to narrow the window for any interference."

Brilliant plan.

rwbhn··on ABI – Now or Never [pdf]
Discussion of whether the next (or any future) c++ release should break abi compatibility.
rwbhn··on Project Euler 001 the Hard Way
But the author follows that with "It works the same way for 100 as it does 10e100."
rwbhn··on Clearview AI helps law enforcement match photos of people to their online images
So, we must always be reactive rather proactive in our responses? I'm personally quite interested in what might be coming, particular ly if the article does a good job of describing driving forces and potential obstacles.
rwbhn··on Merry Christmas HN

rwbhn··on Uber’s self-driving car could not detect pedestrians outside of a crosswalk
>> I think one of the biggest lessons here is about the difficulty of relying on humans to maintain attention while covering an autonomous vehicle.

Why not run these systems in shadow mode to collect data, rather than active? Have the human completely in control and compare system's proposed response to human's. At my last job running a new algorithm in shadow mode against the current one was a common way to approach (financially) risky changes.

rwbhn··on Uber’s self-driving car could not detect pedestrians outside of a crosswalk
Then it can't be deployed on public roadways!
rwbhn··on Dark crystals: the brutal reality behind a booming wellness craze
You'd think it would be an easy sell that unethically mined crystals harbor "bad" energy, not "good". But I guess nobody involved in sales & distribution actually cares about anybody's well being.
rwbhn··on Is Perl 6 Being Renamed?
My favorite bit: "If you dislike hearing other people use it, you may continue to be upset."
rwbhn··on The Broken Chain Problem
When using this technique, don't forget to account for infrequent processes - quarterly/annual reviews/audits, for example.
rwbhn··on The Browser Monopoly
