rwaliany··on Did Bitcoin just prove it can't scale?
Bitcoin is Myspace.
rwaliany··on I'm getting screwed with my stock options
1) get RSUs as soon as you can (if it's not too expensive or seed is a convertible note), so that if you leave you're still an owner in the company. 2) they should just add shares to the company to increase the option pool. I'd consider anything else shady.
rwaliany··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (August 2014)
http://kitchenbowl.com - iOS Engineer in Seattle passionate about cooking -- 1st employee / seed funded. E-mail jobs@kitchenbowl.com if you're interested.
rwaliany··on Probabilistic Models of Cognition
love this book.
rwaliany··on Game servers: UDP vs TCP
Be weary of buffer overruns when using a language like C :).
rwaliany··on How to Raise Money
Great article.

"might me" => "might be"

rwaliany··on Why Developers Don't Want to Work on Your Idea (2011)
I thought I’d weigh in my opinion as a developer-entrepreneur who has worked with various business and technical co-founders.

I wrote a post covering 'Business Product Responsibilities' with a graph here: http://simplyryan.com/2013/01/19/business-product-responsibi....

I have found that I don't want to work with non-technical founders because they often don't take ownership of their responsibilities.

rwaliany··on Show HN: AI tool reads privacy policies, tells you which sites sell your info.
it says doubleclick.net does not sell my private information...
rwaliany··on IOS After Android (what's been copied by Apple from Android)
It's not a service to humanity to copy the features from a Desktop computer, call it a mobile phone, and claim that this phone is better than a product that was designed to be a phone.
rwaliany··on Fantastical: A new calendar app for Mac launches
FYI, if the developer is reading this, please let me delete events from the widget.
rwaliany··on Facebook Loses Much Face In Secret Smear On Google
I guarantee you that Google is running it as a negative PR campaign against Facebook. There's no way someone would sabotage their relationship with Facebook when they're paying the bills.
rwaliany··on [dead]
I've had the pleasure... of inviting him to talk at UC Berkeley Linux User Group. He made us change the name of the group to the UC Berkeley GNU/Linux User Group. During dinner, he also likes to stick his hair in the communal food. When I invited him a second time to speak, I avoided him like the plague.
rwaliany··on Are founders really 1000x more valuable than their employees?
There is a huge risk in opportunity cost to join a startup.

Some founders such as serial entrepreneurs who have proven their value, I could see 100-1000x. However, first-time and inexperienced founders should not get more than 10x their employees given that they providing a lower expectation.

Also priced into it should be the difficulty for you to do it yourself. If the company truly does amplify your value by 1000x, then by all means it is a fantastic deal.

rwaliany··on IPhone Revenue Statistics
The 0.1% CTR apps relate to mobile games where there is little interaction with the ad is 'Word Seek Social Lite' The 4.5% CTR app relates to generalized RSS readers similar to FMyLife (ex: Softbaum's FMyLife for which we have a rev sharing agreement).

Hope this helps, of course since these are highly profitable, I can't share too much details.

rwaliany··on Bing: Why Google’s Wrong In Its Accusations
I worked on the Bing AI team (pre-launch), they didn't copy Google. If anything, both search engines copy wikipedia. I believe that this was the click-stream research done by an intern researcher from UBC.
rwaliany··on Show HN: Fqwiki - Qwiki cloned with a single HTML file
I completely agree. It is absolutely absurd.
rwaliany··on Is QWiki just reading Wikipedia w/ Animoto-style presentations?
That's fine, but the demo seems to only show one source? I think it's a nice mash-up, but it is nothing compared to the previous winners.

You can also download that voice from the internet or use Google.

rwaliany··on Some say bypassing a higher education is smarter than paying for a degree
It varies per person. For me, I finished all of my curriculum at Carnegie Mellon, but I will not be completing my degree because I've already gained all the value in my opinion. I think going to school and dropping out was very valuable to me.

rwaliany··on Why Users Fill Out Forms Faster With Top Aligned Labels
Interesting, I tweeted about this last night. Luke Wroblewski had an amazing slideshare on this topic, http://slidesha.re/8A3pI. It has other details such as breaking up the page, alignment, spacing, etc...
rwaliany··on De-emphasize Age, Refocus on Play
I complete agree.
rwaliany··on Why Drinks Taste Better When Sipped Through A Straw
Coke w/ ice tastes better w/o a straw and directly from the glass...
rwaliany··on Ask HN: Sorting massive text files?
I would use map/reduce to solve this problem. You can run a single node psuedo-cluster in a few minutes by using Cloudera's package repositories (CDH3, https://wiki.cloudera.com/display/DOC/Hadoop+(CDH3)+Quick+St...). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MapReduce
rwaliany··on [dead]
The graphics sound like tower defense.
rwaliany··on [dead]
Clearly, Apple was right.
rwaliany··on “Facebook Questions is exactly like Quora.”
Interesting, facebook questions has an ESP Game-like solution to answer questions, similar to hunch where you cycle through questions (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ESP_game).
rwaliany··on User-mining: Start at the gym, end up at a bar?
Updated graph on gym usage by hour: http://simplyryan.files.wordpress.com/2010/07/gymhour.png
rwaliany··on User-mining: Start at the gym, end up at a bar?
The data is from March 15th to May 1st (~45 days). It is a noisy estimation based on foursquare and twitter location check-ins (estimated samples from a population of about 100k users in San Francisco, CA with a technology bias). I haven't analyzed user-specific data, such as who went to both venues. I am open to suggestions on future analysis.
rwaliany··on User-mining: Start at the gym, end up at a bar?
The data suggests that Thursday night Tapas bar/restaurants are very popular and that is included under "restaurants" according to yelp.com.
rwaliany··on Ask HN: If I gave you $20.00 US, What would you buy?
A twelve pack of Blue Moon.
