rutierut··on I Really Blew It (2020)
Yes "to create value in any way" is wrong, I should have written something more nuanced.

I think you are right on this mainly being about his super valuable teachings not being utilized and this specific post not being about the author thinking he's a genius although he does think so[0].

rutierut··on I Really Blew It (2020)
So if I'm getting this right, and I might not, the author:

- Is a genius. Outside the bounds of usual intelligence and thus unrecognizable for average people.

- He however is not able to use his genius to create value in any way. He specifically mentions failing to teach others to do so but this is because they are unable to comprehend his genius.

- Finally he his also not able to signal his genius (in any of his numerous publications) in such a way that someone who does have the tools/skills(money/better communication) to exploit this enormous unused potential is willing to do so.

If it's a duck but:

- nobody thinks it looks like a duck,

- it doesn't quack and

- it isn't able to produce any offspring that

   - can quack or

   - look like a duck

Is it really a duck?
rutierut··on TailwindCSS v2.0
I really think writing component-scoped and BEM named CSS with Tailwind is the sweet spot here.

For example:

  .menu {
    @apply w-full h-12 bg-gray-100 flex flex-row items-center;

    &__icon{
      @apply h-8 w-8 object-fit;
    }
  }
rutierut··on macOS 11 (Big Sur) Compatibility News
Their first-generation Kontrol MK1's(original price $1000) haven't been working on Mac OS for years now.

I've been modding them, taking out the processing units and replacing them with custom ones that are class compliant.

It's a shame these music hardware companies tend to do no future proofing at all sometimes.

rutierut··on Show HN: AI color palette generator for Tailwindcss
This is a lovely app but it really needs to generate grays as well. You just can't randomly drop in a color palette without changing the default TW grays. (they are pretty blue)
rutierut··on You're a Slave to Money, Then You Die
True but for a lot of people that's pretty much it. It would not be absurd to say: "For my 4 year old soccer is just pushing a ball".
rutierut··on RFC: Adopt a modern JavaScript framework for use with MediaWiki
As someone who has been using Vue for a long time and recently fell in love with Svelte, I really hope they wait for a bit and go with the Vue 3 version. It brings a lot of huge advantages to Vue that make it much much more maintainable.
rutierut··on Show HN: Browser extension to visually edit CSS and sync edits with code editor
The title didn't quite cover it so I'll explain it a bit better here.

Devsync uses the Chrome debugger API to get to the original location of CSS through sourcemaps. This enables you to edit the CSS on your page (through the CSSOM or the debugger) and simultaneously edit the source of that CSS through a, in this case, websocket connection to your editor.

If anything is unclear or if you have any criticism/suggestions I'm happy to hear them! I've been working hard on this for the past months and am happy to finally get it out there.

rutierut··on Where are all the animated SVGs?
I'm working on some animated SVG's for my landing page, after trying to find some tools to help animating this and trying out SVGator I ended up so frustrated that I just switched back to hand-coding them. It's not the best but works pretty ok, here's a screen shot of what it looks like:

rutierut··on PIA open-sources and announces audit plans
> Obviously, no one believes for one minute that any 'normal' citizen will be granted access to most things.

In the Netherlands we get reasonably close with what we call WOB requests (literally: Law of Public Governance).

It takes a long time before you get the data (months) and it gets manually redacted but requests like for example:

I would like to receive all internal communication of the ministery of Health with my name in the email body.

Generally, get honored.

rutierut··on Firefox Replay
This is a good comment, I use FF Dev and Chrome RN, the current project I'm working on is Chrome only. It's nice for context switching (docs, etc in FF, debugging & development in GC) but I was not able to do this (1y ago) on my 2013 MB Pro, it was simply to slow.
rutierut··on Allbirds CEO on Amazon's copycat strategy
I largely agree with your point but I think your example could have been better, companies like CC but a better example would be Red Bull could easily be switched out for a cheap clone and not suffer much in revenue, Red Bull has no superior quality but it's the brand that sells.
rutierut··on Ask HN: What's the most valuable thing you can learn in an hour?
To be wrong.

Don't identify with your point of view, you are not your opinion and your worth is not defined by its validity.

rutierut··on Gitlab considers not hiring SREs and Support Engineers in China and Russia
I think you are confusing them having something against Russia(gov) with Russians(people). They also clearly state that current employees will not be affected. Reading the motivation behind it and the possible dangers it would pose to their clients. I think it's very reasonable not to continue having sensitive data be available in Rus & Chi.

What would you do in this case?

rutierut··on Bike crash left Spokane man unconscious, so his Apple Watch called 911
The bystander effect is probably complete nonsense, there have been some recent studies that tried to replicate its findings and they found the opposite to be true.
rutierut··on Almost one in five men admits to having no close friends, a survey has found
This is amazing, it really shows character that you take action to solve your problems and are successful in doing so.

So please know that this is not aimed at you personally...

But...

I am so freaking sick of people recommending others to pickup either salsa or tango! Not of the people that recommend this themselves but are there really no other options? Tango/salsa classes seem to get recommended again, again and again, I get that it's a fun activity with a good gender balance, forced interaction and just enough tension to naturally provide a fun atmosphere but is there nothing else??

I don't wanna tango :(

rutierut··on iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max
I get what you are saying but that would still be a pretty incremental update right? It wouldn't make the phone significantly more usable, really only a bit prettier.

I think the point here is that the recent "big" features are all pretty minor things like 60fps screens etcetera, they are really nice but nowhere near as important as the new things we used to have every generation.

rutierut··on DRM Broke Its Promise
I think this is a bit of a weak argument, the overwhelming majority of creative works are not sold by the creator themselves.
rutierut··on Show HN: LessPhone – A minimal Android launcher to reduce phone use
I've been using Befor Launcher for the past month, it's pretty similar, LessPhone wasn't a good fit for me. I've been absolutely loving the experience, this is a good concept.

rutierut··on The charm of buying old workstation hardware on the cheap
It's funny how there is nothing really wrong with this. Maybe you could put it to work doing some valuable tasks, like protein folding etc? That'd be really cool!
rutierut··on Firefox brings smooth video playback with the fastest AV1 decoder
Thanks, I used the Halo video[0] to compare, a couple of notes. - Youtube seems to have limited the AV1 support to 1080p, 1440/2160p are not available, anyone any idea why? - The load on my CPU (MB Pro 2018 quad-core/ FF DE 67.0b9) seems about the same but I do seem to be dropping significantly less frames, not sure though.

rutierut··on Virtual DOM is pure overhead (2018)
I love Vue and I vastly prefer it instead of React (have even been using Nuxt lately, now that is some real magic) but that comment makes really good points about Vue!
rutierut··on KaiOS takes on the Apple-Android mobile duopoly
You supposedly can buy that $7 phone in Indonesia but for me it was impossible to find one. I think it's more of a marketing move.

rutierut··on Show HN: RSS feeds by mail, once a week, no app
Valid point, and pretty stupid I did not think of this, imgur seems to be down so you can check out some screenshots here[0] if you want to.

Edit: I added a little F.A.Q to clear some stuff up, if there are more questions I'll be glad to add them!

rutierut··on Show HN: RSS feeds by mail, once a week, no app
To explain this a bit more:

I freaking love smaller blogs, I've seen some of the most creative stuff on there. From people creating elaborate living wikis about nice interests such as blue light exposure, sleep[0], etc. and people transforming their blog posts into pieces of art[1], stuff that simply would not be possible on platforms like medium.

I would run into plenty of these awesome blogs while browsing HN but always forget them or put into an RSS app that I never ended up using because the blogs I followed only ended up posting something every month or so.

This service just sends you a very simple email once a week or month with new content from your feeds if there is any.

Cheers! Will

rutierut··on Why isn't the internet more fun and weird?
I completely agree with the author and love the idea, however I'm more of a Vue guy. The system the author is describing already exists for Vue.js, it's called VuePress[0]. I think it's amazing, not only for docs but also for blogs, portfolios, etc.

Shameless plug but for an example you can check out how it's used in one of the tutorials about VuePress I'm writing. This link will take you to a Vue component used inside a markdown file:

https://willwillems.com/posts/building-a-website-with-vuepre...

And naturally the source[1] is available online.
