russdill··on I switched to Brave
Yes, my history with brave involves doing that several times as they add additional mechanisms
russdill··on I switched to Brave
I'd like to switch friends and family over to brave, but trying to avoid ads that might confuse them was kind of the point...so....
russdill··on OpenAI GPT–6 Astra breaks Enigma message that has resisted solution since 2005
The bombe method requires a crib of sufficient length
russdill··on Show HN: I made a flight simulator, except you're just a passenger
One thing that really kills this for me is it just takes a straight line flight. It really needs to take flight data and pick a track that performed that flight so that turns occur.
russdill··on Sean Carroll explains the biggest ideas in the universe – Full Interview [video] (2025)
I think it's coming from when he gets a question about speculative physics.

The of course anything is possible, we just don't know, but it's highly unlikely.

russdill··on Flock cameras used to arrest a child for playing on a swing?
Decent swing chains $250. Mass surveillance recurring cost of $5000/mo. Someone please help me budget this, I'm dying.
russdill··on Eating Fruit Skins
It's very common to use a peeler to peel the skin, then keep peeling until you get to the seeds and just use those peeled strips.
russdill··on Rings forged from meteorites may have been fashionable among ancient Greek elite
They go completely dark at a very high altitude. I feel like a bright sunny day would give you a better chance of seeing a falling rock, at least once it gets closer to the ground
russdill··on Using the railway network as a flatbed scanner
Taking this to the extreme is doing this from space, which is how many imaging satellites actually work.
russdill··on Mushroom behind 'tiny people' hallucinations identified
poe may have won this time...
russdill··on Spaghettifying DRAM
Seriously. Got tired of reading the same idea over and over reworded endlessly.
russdill··on Mushroom behind 'tiny people' hallucinations identified
This would be laughably easy to disprove. Just put multiple people in the same room and have them privately describe what they see.
russdill··on Pixel Watch 5
Ikr, I've been holding out with my 2020 Garmin venu thinking this would be a big refresh
russdill··on Pixel Watch 5
I want all the things. Overlay an OLED display on top of e paper.
russdill··on The “mechanical miracle” that ruined Mark Twain’s life
Many of the same technologies enables woodcut presses which already existed.
russdill··on Magnitude 7.4 Earthquake – 5 km S of San José del Palmar, Colombia
We are actually pretty good at predicting the long term for specific regions. This allows building codes to be based on the seismic activity of the region. Sadly this isn't something that's practical in many parts of the world
russdill··on Assembly Hall of Shame
I mean....there are several architectures out there which has a nop that is a jump forward. Kind of a tree forest issue imho
russdill··on Dates That Don't Exist (2015)
This is clearly the wrong way to think about it. Dates forward and backward from this flag date exist in both calendars and it's straightforward to convert between them.

Such a flag day didn't involve removing days from one calendar or the other, it switched between them.

russdill··on Read this before you buy that TV streaming stick
Seems like a motivation to switch to using a VPN for such untrusted devices that still require internet access.
russdill··on How real are real numbers? (2004)
A more interesting, if not totally pointless question to me, is, are all the constants of nature computable?

If any are a "randomly" chosen real number, the answer would almost certainly be no. But a test of sufficient precision would of course be impossible.

russdill··on I wanted a clock that never needed setting. Things escalated
This really screams esp32/esphome, and as you'd expect, there are already dozens upon dozens of such projects https://github.com/mfactory-osaka/ESPTimeCast
russdill··on Git rebase -I is not that scary
Yes, and you can diff the two branches when you are done!
russdill··on I'm a USB-C Maximalist
This is an acceptable failure mode. I'd be nice if there was a standardized LED flash or color that you could get so if your relative said something isn't working, you could ask, "Is it flashing three times?" or whatever.

The alternative is barrel connectors. If you plug in the wrong one, there's a decent chance that it a) won't work, or b) never work again.

russdill··on I'm a USB-C Maximalist
The step I've taken is just purchasing USB-C to barrel in various voltages and labeling them appropriately.
russdill··on Copy That Floppy – Cambridge guide for preserving data from fragile floppy disks
The apple 2 5.25 drive does quarter track steps. I think this may be the issue.
russdill··on Camera with transparent display launches for the equivalent of $29
I would argue for some form of head tracking to always display the appropriate frame.

It would be nice if you could use hud display tech so it would automatically track, but I don't think it's possible in this form factor

russdill··on Fable turned reMarkable into Tom Riddle's diary from Harry Potter
The no x no y no z is absolutely necessary to include.
russdill··on Astrophysicists Puzzle over Webb’s New Universe
Depends on how deep you want to go https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Biggest_Ideas_in_the_Unive...
russdill··on Windows CE Dreamcast Community Edition (wince-dc)
"One cmake invocation goes from source to a bootable disc.gdi. No Platform Builder, no SDK install, no CD key." It's like the new emdash.
russdill··on CarPlay Is Additive
It doesn't negate the problems you are pointing out, but there are several devices that bridge the USB wireless gap. (Aawireless, etc)
