ruricolist··on The most surprising Unix programs
"It's also why Catholic nuns were over-represented in early computing."

Would you mind expanding on that?

ruricolist··on Cloture: Clojure in Common Lisp
I did actually do most of the initial development on Clozure.
ruricolist··on Cloture: Clojure in Common Lisp
I have actually reached the point of being able to load Instaparse.
ruricolist··on The Secret History of Dune
There's more to the story even than that. I read the draft of "They Stopped The Moving Sands" in The Road to Dune and wondered: whatever happened to the dune control project? It turns out that the grasses they planted then to control the dunes are now regarded as invasive species, and Boy Scouts earn merit badges by ripping them up.

There is a fork that supports Python 3:

ruricolist··on Update Regarding Add-Ons in Firefox
Thanks, you just saved me a headache.
ruricolist··on Facebook Still Tracks People on Yelp, Duolingo, Indeed
Just because all the other reactions are so hostile: even granted that some people are less susceptible to advertising, our susceptibility will vary. There will be times when we are tired, preoccupied, upset, distracted. Advertisers can afford to blanket us with advertisements, to lie in wait for our moments of weakness.
ruricolist··on What software will you trust when you get senile?
Of course the habits we form now -- reaching for our phones, bringing up Google or Uber -- will persist into our old age. But chances are that by then there will be no Google, no Uber, and nothing recognizable as a phone. Imagine an old man repeating "OK Google" into his empty palm. That's our future.
ruricolist··on Rackjure
I think you can use Anarki in exactly that way:

ruricolist··on How the Blog Broke the Web (2017)
Personally, I think Wikipedia broke the web; it absorbed a world of individually maintained, individually slanted resources into a mass, then slowly drained away that personality in favor of a neutral POV, one edit at a time.
ruricolist··on The ties between Silicon Valley and the military run deep
What Lisp is this? I can understand what it's doing but it's clearly pre-CL.
ruricolist··on Lisp in Small Pieces of Clojure, part 3
I remember once reading a quote to the effect "Don't think of them as parentheses, think of them as handles."
ruricolist··on Running Lisp in Production (2015)
This is not so much a Lisp problem as an SBCL problem. SBCL just doesn't have a very good garbage collector. I nearly gave up on Lisp fighting with it, but ultimately switched to Clozure instead, and never regretted it: Clozure has a fantastic garbage collector. I run Clozure and Postgres side by side on one 4G Linode without a peep.
ruricolist··on Tiny, Perfect Staircases Made by French Woodworkers
How does the trick with the screwdriver work, exactly?
ruricolist··on The Game of Everything, Part 1: Making Civilization
There's Freeciv (http://www.freeciv.org/) if you want to try one without spending anything.
ruricolist··on ‘Saluton’: the surprise return of Esperanto
This is from "La lingua por ni":

ruricolist··on ‘Saluton’: the surprise return of Esperanto
One could argue that Esperanto's reliance on derivation through affixes makes it in a practical sense a Semitic language in European clothing.
ruricolist··on ‘Saluton’: the surprise return of Esperanto
"Patrulo" would also work.

"Ino" and "ulo" are practically redundant, which makes it (I think) the easiest way to sneak in a masculating affix.

ruricolist··on Chuck Moore, Extreme Programmer
You certainly can be your own editor, but you have to wait a few years between the writing and the editing.
ruricolist··on Statistics with the array language Klong
Kerf also uses keywords, I believe.
ruricolist··on How to Read the JFK Assassination Files
They might all be dead by now.
ruricolist··on After the end of the startup era
Doesn't everyone on Android use Timely?
ruricolist··on Simple Ways to Be Better at Remembering
Clozes could help, if the question can be expressed as a series of steps or as individual facets.
ruricolist··on Easing Eye Strain with the Right Lenses (2012)
I'm not an optometrist, and I haven't worn contacts in years. All I can tell you is that they weren't nearly as much of a hassle as people make them out to be. I just have strong, but not vision related, reasons to prefer glasses.
ruricolist··on Easing Eye Strain with the Right Lenses (2012)
I have anisometropia even more extreme than yours. I wonder, have you ever tried contacts? For anisometropia, the closer the prescription is to the eyes, the better. I choose to wear glasses now, but I still have to go out of my way to find small enough frames (unfortunately out of fashion) that the lenses sit close enough to my eyes that the images converge.
ruricolist··on Org-Mode Is One of the Most Reasonable Markup Languages to Use for Text
Thanks, that's useful.
ruricolist··on Org-Mode Is One of the Most Reasonable Markup Languages to Use for Text
I'm pretty sure I knew about that at one point, but then forgot -- possibly more than once.

Perhaps a public shaming will help me remember this time.

ruricolist··on Org-Mode Is One of the Most Reasonable Markup Languages to Use for Text
Regarding the syntax for URLs: I for one think Markdown is better here. I have seven megabytes of notes in Org mode and I still regularly mess up the order of the URL and the text.
ruricolist··on Windows Subsystem for Linux is out of beta
Since you have to uninstall and reinstall WSL to upgrade it, it makes more sense to store your files on the Windows file system and symlink them into your home directory.
ruricolist··on Windows Subsystem for Linux is out of beta
I've been using vcxsrv.
