runholm··on Revision Demoparty Online 2020
So sad not to be there this year. Love to the scene from Ninjadev!
runholm··on Amazon and Apple hit by EU tax crackdown
We can't run a society based on companies being moral. We need laws regulating it and in this case, it seems like the EU is actually enforcing them.
runholm··on iMac Pro
Performance per $ isn't great, but the hardware is good. If you want to crunch data like a champion you need to spend the same $ on a desktop with a big fat GPU suited for GPGPU tasks and with proper cooling. The rest of the system doesn't really need to be insane, but you have to be able to keep up with the GPU.

I doubt the iMac can keep running with a high load over time without thermal throttling.

runholm··on Telia to Pay Nearly $1B to Settle Uzbek Bribery Claims
The bribe was for a rich and powerful family in Uzbekistan. The US and Dutch authorities didn't like that.
runholm··on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Aren't Fully Disabled When Off in iOS 11 Control Center
> If I want to use the torch or flash then I’ll decide if there’s enough battery left

Lithium batteries are worn a lot by high amperage when they are already close to empty. They are protecting the battery from wearing out too fast.

runholm··on Apple Scales Back Its Ambitions for a Self-Driving Car
Not well known in the west, but Mitsubishi has been and is active in an insane number of business sectors:

Shipping, motor vehicles, home electronics, bank and finance (UFJ holdings), nuclear power, cameras and optics (Nikon), industrial chemistry, beer brewing (Kirin) and real estate.

runholm··on Amazon's War on Fake Eclipse Glasses Trips Up Newbie Merchant
True, but when making investments like this you shouldn't invest money you can't afford to lose.
runholm··on Breaking open the Mt. Gox case, part 1
It's what you get if you walk into a gas station determined to mix everything they have on their shelves and hope this results in a drug. It's a very cheap and easy drug to create, but its ability to destroy the user's body far surpasses more conventional drugs like heroin.

The life expectancy of a user is 1-2 years as their tissue starts to die.

runholm··on Don't tell people to turn off Windows Update
Microsoft has been pushing adware through Windows Update. It is natural that this will cause users to disable the feature, and Microsoft knew this. They chose ad revenue over robust security on their platform.
runholm··on Zillow faces lawsuit over ‘Zestimate’ tool that calculates a house’s worth
Their algorithm is the very core of the Zestimate product. The value of the IP is incredibly important for the company, and they would be very stupid to reveal any details of its inner workings.
runholm··on U.S. To Ban Laptops in All Cabins of Flights from Europe
Honestly, I suspect this might be a convenient way to be able to spend more time breaking into the laptops of travelers without the travelers noticing.
runholm··on Dell Takes Venture Arm Out of Stealth, Aims to Spend $100M Annually
You are just describing a well-designed media center computer.
runholm··on UK triggers the official Brexit process in a letter to EU
If the pound was currently undervalued analysts would be all over that by now. None of the large investors in the world are currently investing hard in British assets.

There is nothing indicating that the market will correct itself.

runholm··on Last call for the phone booth?
Go with security cameras. Higher bandwidth connection for more pwning abilities.
runholm··on What makes gambling wrong but insurance right?
Stop arguing the importance of disability insurance. You sound like a parrot. Nobody is disagreeing.

You explained your suggested alternative to life insurance. Really don't think I need to copy paste that to you. Try the parent button.

runholm··on What makes gambling wrong but insurance right?
I am not disagreeing with the importance of disability insurance. I am disagreeing with your proposed solution to not having life insurance.

Remarrying rich and the kids eventually getting jobs is not a plan I would be ok with.

runholm··on SHA-1 Collision Detection on GitHub.com
Weaknesses with theoretical attacks have been known for over 10 years, and most major companies started phasing it out of use years ago. The recent news that someone was able to find two colliding inputs is just yet another red flag against continuous use, but there is no more need to panic now than a year ago. Remember that finding a collision for a spesific input is much harder than finding two inputs which collide.
runholm··on What makes gambling wrong but insurance right?
You obviously have no concept of marriage or the cost of an education for your kids. Life insurance is there to make sure your families life isn't utterly ruined. Your suggestion is to leave the spouse forced to marry someone rich fast and have the kids work at McDonalds.
runholm··on German traffic light stays red for 28 years (2015)
No, the other arms of the intersection are actively using lights so by regulation this arm must also be light regulated. They can't remove it even if they wanted to.
runholm··on German traffic light stays red for 28 years (2015)
At least in Norway the green arrow doesn't only tell you that you are allowed to make the turn, but it also tells you that other traffic has red light so that you know you are guaranteed the right of way.
runholm··on Risks soar, bills come due as 20th-century dams crumble
It cost the same as running the war in Iraq for a few hours[1]. Since the two expenses are closely related, I suggest we put them on the same tab and call it a day.

runholm··on Apple starts rejecting apps with “hot code push” features
OP proposed a world in which the web starts now, so there is no browsing being done on iOS in this scenario.
runholm··on Apple starts rejecting apps with “hot code push” features
The internal download and update is allowed when it consists of media resources and such which is not native executed code.
runholm··on Linus' reply on Git and SHA-1 collision
Computers are not getting better at the rate they used to, but we are still improving both on performance and power.

However, the largest change we have seen the last couple of years is the accessibility of computer power. These days an attacker can be concerned mostly by how many CPU/GPU hours he needs to rent from Amazon or equivalent providers to achieve his goal. So the accessibility, convenience, and price of processing power is still improving quite fast.

runholm··on Asus Prime X370-PRO specs suggest AMD Ryzen processors may support ECC memory
64GB is also the limit of Intels desktop i7 processors. I don't think Ryzen is intended as server processors, so 64GB should cover the target market very well.
runholm··on GitLeaks – Search engine for exposed secrets on GitHub
Is this different from any other search engine? They just index web pages and let users search the data?
runholm··on Trump2cash – A stock trading bot powered by Trump tweets
It doesn't need to be right every time, it needs to beat the market. I am not saying that I know that it does beat the market, but it would be interesting to know if it does.

All you have provided is proof that it is sometimes wrong, which is not surprising at all.

runholm··on Electronics robust enough for Venus
"While Venus’s surface is awful, its upper atmosphere is surprisingly Earthlike. 55 kilometers up, a human could survive with an oxygen mask and a protective wetsuit; the air is room temperature and the pressure is similar to that on Earth mountains. You need the wetsuit, though, to protect you from the sulfuric acid."

https://what-if.xkcd.com/30/ (not quite a scientific source, so make what you want of it)

Maybe if your plants can deal with the acid you might be able to do it. (I am not a biologist, chemist or anything relevant to answer this question, this is just my best guess).

runholm··on Electronics robust enough for Venus
To be fair, lithium will react quite fast with our atmosphere as well, so we are pretty good at keeping atmosphere out of batteries. 460C temperatures on the other hand is a challenge.
runholm··on What Vizio was doing behind the TV screen
The problem you are describing is one that many large companies spend huge resources on today, so guarantee you that it is not something you do in a couple of days.

Even if you had the system up and running, you would still need to create a large database system managing 100 billion data points each day and integrate the stream of information with your customers APIs.

$2m worth of developer time going into this project is very likely. Thinking you could do this in a couple of days is simply ignorant.
