runholm··on A Message to Our Customers
> they may be kicking up a whole lot of fuss over a relatively minor issue

I strongly disagree. They are taking a stance in the debate about government mandated backdoors in software.

runholm··on Wikipedia starts work on $2.5M internet search engine project to rival Google [pdf]
Google uses a highly sophisticated set of data and algorithms to determine what to present to who when they search for what from where. The algorithms are obviously secret, but any user paying a bit of attention will notice the results are clearly not generated from the text in the text field alone.
runholm··on Barcode attack technique
I can pay at my local store by scanning the QR code for the specific register. The app then let me chose to pay for the currently ongoing transaction at that register. It's neat.

Besides such application specific use cases they seem dead though.

runholm··on Download.com and Others Bundle Superfish-Style HTTPS Breaking Adware
Linux solve that by allowing users to add repositories. I don't see why that would not work for Microsoft as well.
runholm··on How Wired Is Going to Handle Ad Blocking
I tried to allow their ads after reading this article, but they still didn't load because they depend on several trackers (which I still block).
runholm··on Hoverboard fires
High-end products that compete with the hoverboard do have much more safe designs. The problem is that the market has been flooded with flawed products that have been pushed past what is safe to lower the price.
runholm··on Code.google.com was shut down, Go packaging is broken
Doesn't help the fact that Google repeatedly shut down services that are in use. It is getting harder and harder to use Google services in business because it has become a liability.
runholm··on Zcash, an untraceable Bitcoin alternative, launches in alpha
Credit cards are more expensive than most would like them to be. We don't need another expensive system.

Besides, credit cards offer protection in that they are able to give insurance on purchases by doing charge backs.

runholm··on A proposal for removing obsolete Emacs packages
Seems like a change that would break a lot of configurations for users.
runholm··on Amazon full of sponsored reviews
> Then how do you prevent sellers from spamming downvotes against negative reviews?

Sellers attempting to manipulate reviews is present in regular reviews as well. It's got nothing to do with the difference between voice reviews and regular reviews. This is a problem Amazon hopefully (and probably) is addressing already with software to detect it.

runholm··on Hawaii Court Rescinds Permit to Build Thirty Meter Telescope
Can someone clarify to me why they are insisting on building it on that specific mountain where it has been met with resistance from day one?
runholm··on Macbook charger teardown: surprising complexity inside Apple's power adapter
If people in general are not careful enough with the product, it sounds to me as the product is not built well enough for regular use.
runholm··on The WTO rules against “dolphin-safe” labels on tuna
Read the article. You are way off.
runholm··on Support for older versions of Internet Explorer ends on January 12, 2016
Corporate scale business does not want to depend on "seeing things coming". When you have millions upon millions invested you want to get explicit deadlines for when support for products you depend upon will be dropped. It is very expensive to either do unnecessary rewrites or getting started too late on necessary rewrites.
runholm··on Classic Nintendo Games Are NP-Hard (2012)
A neural network does not give any guarantee of solving the problem within any number of iteration. NP-hard problems can be solved, but the solution take a lot of time to find and a slightly larger problem is even harder to solve.

Neural networks is an AI method of searching the solution space in a more intelligent way than "trying everything" (true for most AI methods actually).

runholm··on GPL Licenses Logos Now Available
They are all available as SVG. There are links right above the images. "ctrl-f SVG"
runholm··on Walmart’s $10 Smartphone Has Better Specs Than the Original iPhone
It's locked to a pay pr. minute deal, so if you use it as a smart device on wifi only you never have to pay anything. Great for people with very limited funds and no access to the internet in other ways (assuming they can get access to a wifi, which you at least can do many places in large cities).
runholm··on Asm.js Chess Battle
They seem to be horribly bad to me. Constant obvious miss play sacrificing pieces at random from time to time.
runholm··on The Twelve Networking Truths
"the Internet community".
runholm··on A $99.99 Surfboard Upends the Industry
You are shipping a huge impractically shaped object (too long for many regular shelves).
runholm··on Show HN: Vertexshaderart.com
Don't use safari for webGL. It's sadly become the IE6 of webGL always lagging way behind.
runholm··on Kill the laws that keep car dealers in business
Based on the fact that a large industry is not doing this I would guess there are some reason it's not a good idea economically. I don't see an obvious flaw in your suggestion, but it's so simple that someone in the industry have to have come up with it already and decided not to do it.
runholm··on Crazily fast hashing with carry-less multiplications
Interesting how horrible the result may be when you use TDD for hash algorithm development.
runholm··on Environment Variables and Path in Windows 10
That's not true at all. In the corporate world Windows is still the default because of many the tools used to make large organisations flow are available only on Windows. OSX and Linux is used a lot as well, but it's most common in small organisations and new "hipper" companies.
runholm··on Webwatch
Someone need to make a tool to monitor the documentation for change.
runholm··on PrettyPing
I am colorblind.
runholm··on Apple tells U.S. judge 'impossible' to unlock new iPhones
Specifically they can't break iPhones running iOS8 or newer. Which is available for quite old iPhones.

I do not think this is an attempt to sell newer iPhones to the small fraction of users they have running iPhones too old for iOS8.

runholm··on Apple's auto ambitions sideswipe electric motorcycle startup
> ... after a long struggle to find funding and a sound business model.

So the company was already doing poorly and engineers switched to a better paid job in a stable company. Hardly Apples fault that Mission Motors was a shitty place for an engineer to stay.

runholm··on To save on weight, a detour to the moon is the best route to Mars
Doesn't that just increase the gain of doing the refueling?
runholm··on USB/IP Project
With all the new ultrabook laptops lacking ethernet, this would be awesome!
