rudle··on U.S. suspending visa services worldwide due to coronavirus
Headline is misleading as USCIS is suspending in-person visa operations. Renewals and transfers of US visas are often conducted via courier and post.

From https://uscis.gov

> As of March 18, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has suspended routine in-person services until at least April 1 to help slow the spread of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). USCIS staff will continue to perform duties that do not involve contact with the public. However, USCIS will provide emergency services for limited situations. To schedule an emergency appointment contact the USCIS Contact Center.

> The length of the beard is proportional to ops experience.

I know you're trying to be funny, but this statement excludes all people who can't grow long beards from being considered "ops".

rudle··on Will Apps Kill Websites?
I hope apps don't kill websites for the same reason I'm glad people don't build flash microsites anymore.

The number one reason I prefer the web is that it's extensible! If there's a web app I don't like, I can write a userscript to modify it to my needs. The web has a standard API (HTML/JS/CSS) and a means for extension so I'm free to make the web suit me. This freedom is something that I miss when I'm using a mobile device and I hope it never goes away.

rudle··on Show HN: Fetchful - Fetch page information previews from any link
Great idea!

I see:

Could not generate a preview, please check the URL is valid and does not redirect then try again.
It seems like the service is down, so the error message is probably incorrect. That being said, you should follow redirects, this is a no-brainer. You can make HEAD requests to save bandwidth. Also, this one is minor, the enter key should submit the form.

Kinda "useless" without links to the patches.
rudle··on Show HN: Realtime Keyboard Heatmap with heatmap.js
It's rather strange to see a QWERTY layout when using dvorak. That said, if you showed a dvorak layout to a QWERTY user, you'd have a powerful demonstration of how much less finger travel there is and it convince them to switch.
rudle··on How fast can you type? Free online touch typing speed test
104wpm and then 96wpm

This is considerably higher than I usually score (which is why I took it twice), especially considering I was on a laptop keyboard. This leads me to question the accuracy of this test.

rudle··on Why keeping up with RSS is poisonous to productivity, sanity
There's also the reader extension http://labs.postrank.com/gr You can set the treshold, and it will dim out the items that are below it. It greatly increases your ability to "fly through" items, without worrying too much about what you're missing.
rudle··on VimConf
As far as topics are concerned, I'd really like to see a vim plugin created from start to finish. The tutorials and docs that exist leave a lot to be desired, and this seems like a nice venue to demonstrate (and explain!) the capabilities of the vim plugin system.
rudle··on Show HN: We made a spam-free lyric search engine
You should integrate more sites (assuming that's how this works). A query that I expect to work is "Simeon's Dilemma", which currently returns no results.
rudle··on Jsfx; js sound effect generator
What a great project.

FYI: the sliders don't show up in FF5, you should maybe add some browser compatability messaging.

rudle··on Comcast cuts off customer for going over 250GB of legitimate use
What, exactly, does Comcast have a monopoly on? Basic internet access might be considered a necessary utility, but an unlimited 15MB line is certainly not.

rudle··on Comcast cuts off customer for going over 250GB of legitimate use
Why?

I was turned off by the American view point of this post.

I can't even stream Netflix in my country, and this guy is complaining that he can't watch 250GB of it?!

rudle··on Comcast cuts off customer for going over 250GB of legitimate use
> My opinion on all this is simple. The ability to access broadband internet is a right, and should be defined as an essential utility.

Yawn... first world problems.

Broadband is assuredly not your "right", it's a privilege. If the terms of the contract are broken (and they were, twice) you have very little recourse.

More to the point, get a Comcast business line. You will get hassled less, and I hear it may actually be unlimited.

I whipped a little ruby script to download the kindle versions.

The URLs are really, really, nice. You can substitute "kindle.noimages" for any other format you'd like.

rudle··on I need proof that zero to 1 is equal to 1 to 2
Grossly misleading headline.

The real title of the question is: "I need mathematical proof that the distance from zero to 1 is the equal to the distance from 1 to 2"

rudle··on Readable: A more readable version of "readability"
>> The source code isn't in any repository because I don't work with repositories.

You really should be using version control. If you want people to contribute to this open-source project, you can't beat a public repository (like github) at which you can receive patches from other developers. Right now, it is not apparent how I can work to improve your project.

rudle··on Show HN: Stat Tracking website for fantasy baseball.

Any plans to expose an API? This would help rescue teams that are stuck in jira or trac.

rudle··on Who else is hacking a project instead of watching the Super Bowl?
Doing both is certainly not difficult, football games feature a lot of downtime.

rudle··on Ask HN: What is your workflow for saving bookmarks?
Depending on the type of bookmark, I use a combination of Read It Later and leander https://github.com/rudle/leander .

Shameless self-promotion: leander provides full text search on webpages from the command line. There is also an (experimental) sinatra web frontend/API.

As a long-time screen (and now tmux) user, reading about this wild hack on top of job control made me wince more than once.

rudle··on Don’t Have a Mobile Theme Please

This site works quite poorly on my Android phone. There is no left margin and there are some issues with the links from the homepage. Even the title of website is mangled.

I find it hard to take this article too seriously.
