rubyist5eva··on Multiranges in Postgres
we've been speeding up our time based queries using tsrange and gist indexes and they have been really great
rubyist5eva··on Video gaming may be associated with better cognitive performance in children
Videogames as a coping mechanism for stress stopped me from committing suicide. It's not so simple, nothing ever is.
rubyist5eva··on macOS Ventura is now available
I'm not sure but all of my vms are headless so I don't think that would really have any benefit..?
rubyist5eva··on How to maintain engineering velocity as you scale
lol this feels like exactly the opposite of what's going on at my company now:

1. Hire the best engineers: fire half the dev team and replace them with offshore devs for pennies on the dollar 2. build solid foundations: cut every corner possible to get whatever crazy deal our sales team made yesterday 3. tracking metrics: uptime? who cares, CI taking too long? whatever

well, I suppose our teams are small when they literally fired everyone and made the "team" so small it literally couldn't be smaller or it wouldn't be a team (there is 2 of us now). Hardly independent though since we're shackled to the whims of clueless sales drones that have zero clue how building software works.

In my experience using linux vms mainly for database workloads Parallels is nearly 10x faster than both UTM using Qemu and even Apple Virtualization (just tested it this morning using Ventura and the latest UTM 4.0 version with Ventura updates).
rubyist5eva··on Asdf – language tool version manager
Been using this for years, one of my favourite tools. Ruby, nodejs, python, golang, even direnv - all managed seamlessly. Never had problems with it when things like rvm or nvm would just break one day for no reason, never had it happen with Asdf.

> It is no coincidence that Mac users have hundreds of windows open while Windows users stay relatively organized.

Personally, I leave tons of windows open because I feel no need to keep things "organized". I rarely feel the need to constantly micro manage things that are running because cmd+tab and cmd+` along with mission control/expose/spaces makes it pretty simple to find what I'm looking for. My individual windows go into pretty specific positions and they rarely move, and I also rarely fully close applications.

Not OP but offering perspective: I've tried it and it's so painfully slow that I just coughed up the money for parallels.

I can use my iphone as a webcam now? This is great, I can just get rid of my actual webcam which is hot garbage anyway.
rubyist5eva··on macOS Ventura is now available
Funny enough, I'm in the first group but prefer Finder's default behavior for the second group.
rubyist5eva··on What’s wrong with medieval pigs in videogames
One video game pig I really enjoy is the giant hog enemies in Bloodborne, the first you encounter being in a sewer of Central Yharnam. Imagine my surprise when I found out that this pig was actually based on an urban legend from the era of feral hogs in the sewers of London (victorian era London being the model for Yharnam in the game). It's these kinds of details in From Software games that really make me appreciate the lengths they go to and the effort involved in creating the worlds for their games.
rubyist5eva··on Ubuntu 22.10 Kinetic Kudu
can you use Flatpack for command line apps yet?
rubyist5eva··on Ubuntu 22.10 Kinetic Kudu
not gonna get an argument from me there, but I have over 1000 steam games
rubyist5eva··on DevOps is broken
"devops" is just when developers do operations, and most developers generally don't want to because they are more interesting in writing software. If your job is just to manage infrastructure and you use terraform, you're still just a sysadmin. It's a "boring" job but someone has to do it.
rubyist5eva··on Ubuntu 22.10 Kinetic Kudu
of course the only comments so far are people complaining that Ubuntu sucks and their $PREFERRED_DISTRO is better

I for one think Steam as a snap is a great idea, and was pleasantly surprised with them taking the feedback about the Firefox snap to heart and actually putting in the work to speed it up.

I was gonna install 22.04.1 tonight (finally got fedup with Windows) but I'm gonna try this tonight instead and definitely give the Steam snap a try. The less I need to boot into Windows to play PC games the better.

Congratulations to the team on another release.

rubyist5eva··on Ask HN: How to deal with regret of not having kids
It's not too late to have children. My sister is 42 and had a wonderful little miracle happen around the same time that my wife (31) was pregnant with my son. She turned out fine and perfectly healthy. You can also always adopt.

I just want to say you should definitely deal with the depression first. Having children is that single hardest thing you will ever do and being depressed will only make it harder. Continue therapy (even if it feels like it's not working - that's the depression - and it's a process not a magic cure), maybe even medication for a bit, start "planning" and giving yourself something to look forward to and towards and that will help with the depression because then your life will also have a direction to go in.

rubyist5eva··on Ask HN: How to deal with regret of not having kids
I would say this is more "why it is important that Richard Stallman doesn't have kids". The guy is a maniac.
rubyist5eva··on We're moving away from swap partitions on our Linux servers
Been using swap files for years and most recently started turning on zram and it’s been smooth sailing.
rubyist5eva··on In Canada it's illegal to call yourself software engineer
There is a term, it's "Professional Engineer" or P. Eng. Someone who is a "locomotive engineer" must also be licensed but I think the exception in terms of vocabulary is historical rather than practical.

The word may be "common" but it is also regulated and defined in law.

rubyist5eva··on In Canada it's illegal to call yourself software engineer
It's not about complexity, sophistication or quality - it's about liability when shit hits the fan and your bugs kill someone.
rubyist5eva··on In Canada it's illegal to call yourself software engineer
It might matter when a bug in a software you wrote kills someone.
rubyist5eva··on In Canada it's illegal to call yourself software engineer
Canadian developer here. I always correct people when they call a developer a software engineer for specifically this reason. I've met exactly one person in my entire career that was actually a licensed engineer working in software. I always get the glazed over eyes look when I tell people that it is actually illegal to claim you are an engineer when you aren't because it's a regulated professional term, but I do it anyway because I think it's important. My father is a licensed mechanical engineer and he's allowed me to be on the periphery of his work, so I have second hand knowledge of how "loaded" the title is and why it is regulated to this degree.
rubyist5eva··on In Canada it's illegal to call yourself software engineer
It's not about quality, it's about liability.

rubyist5eva··on Apple to withhold its latest employee perks from unionized store
You know nothing about Steve Jobs lol
rubyist5eva··on Apple to withhold its latest employee perks from unionized store
Don't expect anything beyond a single letter of a collective bargaining agreement. It's pretty simple.
rubyist5eva··on Canonical shows ads in the Ubuntu CLI
2 lines of text in the terminal, on an Ubuntu OS for an Ubuntu service - that is free for home users? Linux purists really do get bent out of shape for the most minute things.
rubyist5eva··on One trick Apple uses to make you think green bubbles are “gross”
It's because the plebes that can't afford iphones are gross. /s
rubyist5eva··on JetBrains invites developers to join the Fleet Public Preview Program
Easy solution: make your employer pay for it. IntelliJ tools increase my productivity where saved time easily goes into days, it's easily justified from a cost perspective to an employer.
