rubyfan··on Meta VR Glasses
Why does every headshot of someone in a VR headset make them look like a dope?
rubyfan··on DoorDash Spent $1.4M Trying to Stop Mamdani from Becoming Mayor. Now We Know Why
I’m against tipping in any scenario. I don’t think tipping for good service should be the norm. You don’t deserve a tip because you brought my food out correctly and timely, you don’t deserve a tip for delivering my appliances without damaging my walls, you don’t deserve a tip for ringing the register with a smile, all of that is what you’re supposed to do.

If the entire economic model hinges on the majority of people tipping variable amounts then the model seems broken. Charge proportionately more and don’t rely tips, everyone will have a better experience.

rubyfan··on DoorDash Spent $1.4M Trying to Stop Mamdani from Becoming Mayor. Now We Know Why
No. I’ve heard similar stories from baristas at small coffee shops. Any tips through the tap to pay systems get split between the processor, business owner and then the staff. This should be illegal. People should be ashamed
rubyfan··on How can this Amazon scammer keep going, not shipping any goods?
I had this issue with a US seller a few weeks ago and had to jump through hoops to chat with a human who could refund me after weeks of not shipping.

There were over a hundred other messages where people rated them 1 star and reported item not shipped. Amazon responded with a generic message and said it wasn’t the sellers fault.

rubyfan··on Disney+: New user agreement allows ads before movies in all subscriptions
They already run ads for Disney parks, Hulu, ESPN, and other Disney owned content in the Premium tier. They just call them promos or sponsorships in the prior agreement.

The new agreement allegedly introduces a third term “advertisements”.

> We’ve clarified that all Service Plans may include: (i) promotional content, (ii) sponsorships, and (iii) advertisements before/after playback of Content and in channels, live/as-live, special events, and any third-party services content.

I say allegedly because I haven’t received any communication from Disney yet but various reporting refers to email people in European markets have received.

rubyfan··on 'Mad honey' that can stop your heart is being sold online
You’ve got to wake up.
rubyfan··on iCloud+ Hide My Email addresses will remain on icloud.com
Now if they would only figure out how to Hide My Phone Number then these feature would actually impact privacy.
rubyfan··on Controversial creators are benefiting from monetization programs run by Meta
I had a similar experience logging in to FB to delete my account which was inactive for almost a decade. It’s legit was like the movie Idiocracy. Casino vibes, over stimulation, people saying stupid thing, trying to sift through lots of garbage to find the thing you’re looking for.
rubyfan··on Controversial creators are benefiting from monetization programs run by Meta
Why anyone still engages with these platforms is totally beyond me. They are bad for your soul, bad for the nation, bad for the world.
rubyfan··on More than 10 firms pay up to $100k a month for access to Truth Social posts
Right, the fact that the current administration had a 4 year hiatus only extended this period. Think about all the young people that grew up with this as normal.
rubyfan··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
I am one of the people that long for the old internet. I don’t long for it because there are too many normal people on it now.

The old internet was interesting, open, simple, un-gated, and relatively egalitarian with few corporate interests in commanding positions. The new internet is basically a predatory environment disguised as a library.

rubyfan··on “Gravity is worth asking about”
> And then there’s the travesty that is Tahoe.

Liquid Glass has no place on the desktop (or the phone really).

I migrated to Mac OS X from OpenBSD in like 2002 or so. MacOS has been a steady decline for many years, probably soon after the iPhone. Snow Leopard was probably the height of the MacOS experience. It’s been lots of little things along the way but I agree Tahoe is an inflection point.

rubyfan··on There Will Come Soft Rains (1950) [pdf]
It would be dull to write about all the great new building materials our houses are made and the utter lack of futuristic convenience we actually have.
rubyfan··on Apple is getting this wrong
sadly they are probably right
rubyfan··on Show HN: Let's Seal – Let's Encrypt for document signing, free and self-hosted
I love the concept, it would be great to see broader uptake of an open standard for this sort of space.
rubyfan··on Google Discloses $94.1B in SpaceX Stock, Marking 6% Stake
Didn’t they just raise $85B “for AI”?
rubyfan··on Be skeptical of OpenAI's rogue hacker agent story
But what’s the crime? The thing got out of its poorly secured cage and caused what damage? Imagine instead of an agent it was a dog or a chimpanzee that got into the neighbor’s yard and the particular neighbor isn’t even pissed about it.
rubyfan··on Be skeptical of OpenAI's rogue hacker agent story
But what do you honestly expect would happen? It’s “an accident” with no actual damages.
rubyfan··on Be skeptical of OpenAI's rogue hacker agent story
Being a poorly equipped victim still isn’t a crime thankfully.

It may or may not be a crime and typically the damaged party is pressing the charges. One would argue there is no actual damage here.

rubyfan··on Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta warn against overregulating open-weight models
My hunch is they are all seeing the problems at OpenAI and some other collateral damage on the horizon. They don’t want the US government intervening to try to save OpenAI. A little controlled burn is probably good for the industry long term.
rubyfan··on It's getting harder to focus every day
The VAST thing speaks to me. I am capable of deep focus work but often am subject to constant interruption and multiple concurrent urgent demands. During a work week I get a lot done but often feel pulled in a lot of directions like I imagine ADHD might feel like.

During the weekends when I am not occupied with a task I often fall asleep. This happens on the first day or two of vacation also. After a few days my brain acclimates to the pace.

rubyfan··on Startup founders urge U.S. government not to shut off Chinese open weight AI
It’s theft because a lot of rich people have money on the line.
rubyfan··on OpenAI’s accidental attack against Hugging Face is science fiction that happened
I can’t help but feel all warm and fuzzy with my head in the sand and getting a shout out in TFA for calling it marketing.

We don’t currently and probably won’t ever fully understand the conditions that precipitated these events. That and the timing of this event is going to make it look suspicious to a lot of people.

The truth of how it happened doesn’t matter. The attention around this will be used to create the kind of fear marketing that generates enterprise sales. Maybe more importantly it will also be used to aggrandize the national security and financial system threats to effect US government action in a way that benefits domestic closed frontier labs. This is an area already starting to get politically polarized, expect further developments here.

rubyfan··on Advertise in ChatGPT
/ot Hamburger menu at the bottom right is pretty nice too. Haven’t seen it there before but seems like a very user friendly choice for its placement.
rubyfan··on OpenAI and Hugging Face address security incident during model evaluation
I would attribute it to profit motive instead of either stupidity or malice.
rubyfan··on OpenAI and Hugging Face address security incident during model evaluation
This is marketing+. They will look for policy action here to try to capture tax payer dollars.
rubyfan··on Primate 0.40: Route pages, store enums, async schemas and events
I don’t understand what is the primary innovation over other frameworks. In passing it looks like Express 10 years ago but maybe with some modernization and flexibility to leverage components from various other frameworks.
rubyfan··on Caffeine and Cardiovascular Disease: AHA Scientific Statement
Why can’t it be both?
rubyfan··on REO Trucks I4 4WD Pickup Truck Starts at $21,500
I love the concept here. The site and preannounce feels a little gimmicky. It’s definitely of the time but kind of hard to commit to without more detail. Like $25 isn’t a lot of money to reserve a real truck but seems like a lot for a maybe we’ll bring a real product to market.
rubyfan··on Financing the AI boom: from cash flows to debt [pdf]
Translator services usually get paid because they offer an accreditation or certification that the humans doing the translation are trained and are not randos / computers. I could imagine these services becoming marginally more efficient but no dramatically improving profits.
