ruairidhwm··on Ask HN: Suggest some good (free) template for personal website on GitHub pages
I use Clean Blog (https://github.com/BlackrockDigital/startbootstrap-clean-blo...) on mine (https://ruairidhwm.github.io)
ruairidhwm··on Ask HN: Non-CS Hackers, How Did You Land Your First (dev) Job?
Ex-lawyer, I've been coding since I was a teenager but then started freelancing after leaving law. Got picked up by one of my clients and have been working as a full-time dev ever since.

For the actual CS bits, I've been teaching myself. I recently got an article published in Hacker Noon on Big O which was a way for me to consolidate my learning. Algorithms and Data Structures are next!

ruairidhwm··on Big O for Beginners
As a self-taught software engineer, I'm trying to improve my CS knowledge and wrote this article as a way for me to improve. Any feedback would be really helpful.
ruairidhwm··on OOP vs. Functional Programming (2014)
Done!
ruairidhwm··on Ask HN: What are some small machine Learning project ideas?
Maybe check out Kaggle for their competitions and also tutorials?

ruairidhwm··on Barcelona residents used sensors to demonstrate high noise levels at night
Likewise in Barcelona in a touristy area. Crazy noisy. With the summer just starting, I'm anticipating a few sleepless nights!
ruairidhwm··on European gambling company in talks to buy FanDuel for $700M
Another big win for Edinburgh's tech scene :)
ruairidhwm··on Ask HN: What do you consider resume red flags?
Really? That's super annoying!
ruairidhwm··on Ask HN: What company do you wish existed?
In Europe we have Spotahome which i've used a few times and found to be excellent.
ruairidhwm··on Ask HN: What are well designed SaaS websites?
https://stripe.com - It's beautiful but conveys all the information that you need quickly. It also has excellent copy.

https://canny.io - Very crisp design and it conveys the use case really well.

https://baremetrics.com - This has come such a long way and has stunning design.

ruairidhwm··on Ask HN: What APIs do you wish existed?
A comparison API. So for example I could enter '12345' and a unit, and it could return an interesting fact like 'That distance is like climbing Mount Everest twice!'
ruairidhwm··on Building bots to mend badges, or how to get your GitHub account suspended
I'd be interested in hearing more about this. Fancy dropping me an email (address is in profile)?

ruairidhwm··on Becoming a Lawyer Without Going to Law School (2015)
Agreed, as a Scots qualified lawyer and now an engineer I don't feel that choosing the solicitor route was somehow the 'lesser option'.

Additionally most advocates/barristers will work as a solicitor for several years before making the leap to the bar. It's useful to have contacts and to be somewhat known before you do your devilling/pupillage as the minority of the advocates/barristers will pull in the majority of the work and it can be slim pickings for someone who is new.

ruairidhwm··on Ask HN: Which language do you prefer for back end development?
PHP using Laravel. It's brilliant to work with.

I've been playing around with Node.js too and whilst it's an excellent tool, I always find myself coming back to Laravel.

ruairidhwm··on Waze Carpool
Hey

Ah, very interesting. I didn't know that! Poparide looks like a good solution too.

ruairidhwm··on Waze Carpool
Looks just like BlaBlaCar. Nice.
ruairidhwm··on Ask HN: Remote workers, how do you show your work?
Usually just an update on each scrum meeting and hitting my deadlines. Either the work has been done or it hasn't.
ruairidhwm··on Ask HN: Why is Stripe API documentation lacking so badly?
I've found their API docs to be extremely helpful in the past. What do you find to be lacking?

The team are very responsive, so as zapperdapper mentioned, I'm sure they'd welcome a bug report with details of what you're having trouble with.

ruairidhwm··on Ask HN: Are there cheap ways to make websites multi-lingual?
Cheeky but my girlfriend runs a website translation service. She normally focuses on AirBnB listings but handles many other kinds (English/French/Spanish)

ruairidhwm··on Ask HN: University of St. Andrews?
Very good reputation, though a little 'posh' if that bothers you. It has a good college system and social life, though the town itself is very small and I imagine that the student life can become a bit of a bubble.

If you interested in other universities then I'd recommend Edinburgh University. It has an incredible Computer Science program (referred to as Informatics) and the university is world-class. The city is awesome and you have a great mix of student life and regular life in Scotland's capital.

Drop me an email (in profile) if you want more info on it :)

ruairidhwm··on Ask HN: What music do you listen to when programming?(or do you not?)
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - I find that it's stimulating without being distracting. Plus it has amazing soundscapes.
ruairidhwm··on 150 days of living and coding in a van
Hey, I'm bouncing between Madrid and Valencia. Would be great to meet up!

Email is in profile :)

ruairidhwm··on 150 days of living and coding in a van
Go to Scotland and enjoy your freedom to roam :)
ruairidhwm··on Ask HN: Weekend project ideas for remote workers?
Isolation is a big problem that remote workers can face. I would welcome something that could alleviate that.
ruairidhwm··on Delete your Code
Hey

That's an interesting perspective. Personally I don't leave lines of commented out code as I opt for cleanliness, but I do keep a journal for each project I do where I write down little gotchas I discover, or paste in a snippet that either works well, or doesn't and the reasons why.
