ruairidhwm··on Show HN: QuiverKit – 62 developer tools that run offline
Absolutely - not a criticism. I think it's great to try out projects :)

Nice! Reminds me a little of https://github.com/gchq/CyberChef
ruairidhwm··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (July 2026)
A dumb vibe-coded GTA III parody set in my city of Glasgow: https://glasgow-brawler.vercel.app/
ruairidhwm··on Claude Opus 4.8
I managed to find that Haiku outperformed Sonnet on some tasks...don't want to blog spam but if anyone is interested: https://www.ruairidh.dev/blog/sonnet-4-6-drops-format-rule-o...
ruairidhwm··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (May 21)
I recently made halftrace - point it at your OpenAI/Anthropic/LangSmith agent logs and it tells you what shape your agent's rule-following has, why, and what to try. I built it to try and find smooth decay over trajectory length on Claude.

ruairidhwm··on Getting back into photography, ditching the phone camera in 2026?
Ricoh GRIII / IV is absolutely perfect for this imo
ruairidhwm··on Claude Opus 4.7
I guess just a spell-check in the repo? But yes, I'd imagine that they have an effect. Even running the same input twice is non-deterministic.

I literally just posted a blog on this. Some seemingly insignificant words are actually highly structural to the model. https://www.ruairidh.dev/blog/compressing-prompts-with-an-au...
ruairidhwm··on Claude Code OAuth down for >12 hours
Also seen this several times.

ruairidhwm··on Show HN: WinLog – Automatically capture your work wins for reviews and 1:1s
Hi HN,

I built WinLog because I kept seeing good engineers undersell themselves during reviews and promotions. Not because they weren’t doing great work, but because they simply forgot what they’d shipped over time.

WinLog helps you capture your "wins" as you go:

- You can log wins manually in a few seconds, or

- Passively capture candidates from Slack channels you choose (nothing is stored without approval)

Each win is rewritten into a concise, professional bullet you can use for:

- Performance reviews

- 1:1 prep

- Promotion packets

- Brag docs / weekly updates

It’s early, but I’ve been using it as my own tool and found it to be very helpful!

Would love feedback, especially from people who’ve struggled with review season or managing reports.

ruairidhwm··on Ask HN: How do you market a side project?
It has, but there are always new perspectives.
ruairidhwm··on Ask HN: How do you market a side project?
I'd say ICs and Team Leads in eng organisations. So far I'm thinking Reddit and HN? Maybe a bit of LinkedIn
ruairidhwm··on How much recurring income do you generate in 2026 and from what?
$0 so far (just launched).

I recently launched https://winlog.dev, a Slack-first tool to help engineers capture their work as it happens so they’re better prepared for reviews and promotions.

It’s early days, but I’m using it with my own reports and so far it's been really helpful. The goal for 2026 is to grow this into a meaningful side-business, but if not, then it's useful to me!

ruairidhwm··on Ask HN: How are people using ChatGPT to increase productivity in personal life?
I'm moving house and it's great for feeding in floor plans and coming up with ideas. Like having an interior designer. Not always accurate but it's enough to get me going.
ruairidhwm··on Ask HN: How does your team decide who works oncall on Christmas?
As a manager, I try and take most of it on when possible. The team have worked hard all year and I view it as good leadership to let them have that space.
ruairidhwm··on Ask HN: Programmers and Technologists in Scotland
There are absolutely loads of us here in Scotland :)
ruairidhwm··on Technicolor Tokyo
Yeah a RAW image is like a 'digital negative' so it preserves all the data that the sensor in the camera captures. A JPEG or similar is processed and compressed so the camera makes some decisions and 'bakes in' stylistic choices which are much harder to fix in post.

You can read a bit more about it here: https://photographylife.com/raw-vs-jpeg

ruairidhwm··on Technicolor Tokyo
Most of this will be post-processed. You can get a decent camera + lens which helps, as well as a good eye for photography. The rest is shooting in RAW and knowing how to use Lightroom to get the most out of your photo.

ruairidhwm··on Employees given three months to return to Facebook office
For my own learning, what do you mean by a 'crash cart' here?
ruairidhwm··on Ask HN: Is there merit to Leetcode without courses?
Probably not. You need to practice. As a fellow self-taught engineer, I'd say it's worth doing. Check out something like algoexpert.io or one of Andre Neagoie's courses on Udemy to get a mix of theory and practice.
ruairidhwm··on Ask HN: Share your personal sites with us?
https://ruairidh.dev - just my dev blog. Recently given a new lick of paint!
ruairidhwm··on Ask HN: How do you make money on the side?
I have a GraphQL course on Educative. It doesn't make crazy money, but definitely nice beer money every month! You could make several of these to increase the income and it's pretty passive (after writing your course obviously).

ruairidhwm··on A top audio engineer explains NPR’s signature sound (2015)
You wouldn't believe the lack of efficiency in law firms (much of the cost of which is passed to clients). When I tried selling SAAS to law firms, there was a degree of resistance because efficiency threatens the charge by the unit model.

I no longer work in law ;)

ruairidhwm··on Ask HN: Former engineers, how did you transition your career to software?
Sure - I just didn't make enough money from it. Looking back, there was potential but I didn't have enough experience to grow the product, and my technical skillset wasn't anywhere close to the level I've reached working as a full-time software engineer.

At some point I'd look to doing a SaaS again, but I'm happy working on other stuff just now and improving my software engineering skills.

ruairidhwm··on Ask HN: Former engineers, how did you transition your career to software?
Worked as a lawyer but was coding on the side. I started making legal technology products and selling them as SaaS. Then I decided I loved that way more, moved to Spain, started doing freelance development, and eventually got hired full time by a client.

Since then I've changed jobs a few times, but love what I do and have never looked back.
