ru999gol··on Report on the technical vulnerabilities found in Huawei 5G [pdf]
The huawei user account hardcoded in the firmware that has sudoers permissions for insmod/modprobe is really blatant. I would have guessed the Chinese would at least attempt to hide their way in?

So they sell enterprise infrastructure equipment with such an obvious backdoor? It seems the US boycott of Huawei was fully justified after all, I didn't really believe them.

ru999gol··on More information about our processes to safeguard speech data
> The contractor heard private conversations, sex scenes, and violence including "a woman who was in definite distress".

I think this is a bit disingenuous and intentionally sensationalist, nobody has any reason to believe that the Assistant is always listening or will just trigger randomly or on demand by Google because they want to listen to particular conversations, that doesn't even really make any sense. Also various parties have access to the source code, so if it were malicious, there can be evidence of it. That there isn't any evidence is important to mention in this context.

In reality its just that it can randomly miss-classify "Ok Google", nothing malicious about that, and obviously the purpose of the annotator is to look at unrecognized samples, so obviously they are gonna frequently hear those cases, that's sort of the whole point of this.

Maybe "well, duh, how do you think it knows your voice? magical pixie dust?" is a bit of a cop out, but honestly there are two options, them doing what they are doing right now, and not have Google Assistant.

ru999gol··on Apple disables Walkie Talkie app due to eavesdropping vulnerability
remember this idea how weird it is that everybody runs around with spying equipment, you have a always-online device with multiple cameras and microphones. I think people would be uncomfortable knowing that someone was listening or recording video without their knowledge, that's why people put stickers on their laptop cameras. I think its obvious by now that manufacturers aren't capable of developing software that keeps the cameras/microphones secured. In the future we can just assume that any camera/mic in any phone is recording at any given moment and sending it to some malicious entity. Since there is no practical way of disabling the cameras/mics on phones, we just have to learn to live with it.
ru999gol··on VPN owners: 97 VPN products run by 23 companies
Your ISP could still see the servers you connect to and how much data is transferred, they don't need to look in any packets to know you browse YouTube or PornHub, and when, and for how long.

But its also about hiding your identity from the sites you visit (dependent on how well your browser protects your privacy).

ru999gol··on VPN owners: 97 VPN products run by 23 companies
> So, it seems that ExpressVPN have a good marketing budget and little else.

you don't happen to work for any one of the competition do you? anyhow I have been very happy with them, their servers tend to be pretty fast. So add that positive anecdote to his negative anecdote, how useless.

ru999gol··on Navy Got 'UFO' Patent Granted by Warning of Similar Chinese Tech Advances
seems like you just go way out of your way to still be able to continue to deny that the US is reverse engineering UFO tech for a long time.
ru999gol··on Bernie Sanders to unveil plan to cancel all $1.6T of student loan debt
Its sort of amazing that anyone can still openly advocate that raising taxes on the rich "only ends up hurting middle class" or for "no minimum wage" slavery, without getting the shit kicked out of them. The really crazy thing is they think they are good people, not at all rotten and viscous as they truly are. The cliff between rich and poor is ever more increasing, and you think giving the rich more is going to stop this, you deserve whatever is coming to you when the poor have reached their limit and come knocking on your door.

Maybe at least you will realize, that the poor that is going to kick your head in, is not reading Hacker News.

ru999gol··on Boston Dynamics prepares to launch its first commercial robot
America already has robots that kill civilians including women and children all the time (drone program), but that doesn't seem to bother most Americans. I don't see why robots like these, killing children in the middle east (/south america in the future) will be any different.

ru999gol··on Arc.io – A Crowdfunded Distributed CDN
thats such an idiotic thing to say considering they offer dedicated servers with NVMe raid drives.
ru999gol··on Simple Dockerfile examples are often broken by default
why is running as root in the docker a problem? Isn't the whole point of containers to isolate the container? So what is the difference in a container running root or a user? If there is, wouldn't that be more of a docker bug?
ru999gol··on Self-driving trucks begin mail delivery test for U.S. Postal Service

ru999gol··on Has the Python GIL Been Slain? Subinterpreters in Python 3.8
personally I have JS experience (browser/node.js), as well as asio in C++/Boost, EventMachine in ruby and Twisted/Tornado in python. I strongly disagree that people who dislike asyncio only do so because they don't like the event loop. That just sounds like a typical quick dismissal of criticism. No, its a objectively awful convoluted API.

But if you think you can write correct asyncio applications of any significant complexity, that's great. Doesn't change the fact that a lot of highly experienced developers struggle to do so.

ru999gol··on Virtual DOM is pure overhead (2018)
of course not, this is just opinionated rubbish, in the real world people use react dom/native
ru999gol··on Has the Python GIL Been Slain? Subinterpreters in Python 3.8
I have the same opinion about asyncio, its such a bad API that its almost impossible to use correctly. But still, probably better than nothing.
ru999gol··on YouTube “Let's Play”s are preserving video game history
Are there really? I do watch a lot of let's plays and sometimes download them in bulk, but I don't keep them around for long. 1080p60 takes a lot of space and recently a lot are even in 4k.
ru999gol··on YouTube “Let's Play”s are preserving video game history
Unfortunately disk space is still expensive and rather limited, its unfeasible to really preserve YouTube in any meaningful sense. Maybe someday, like Google Video, YouTube videos will disappear forever.
ru999gol··on Next Generation KDE Plasma Notifications
> Lots of attention to detail on the wrong things before they have the basics, IMO.

thanks you pretty much perfectly summarized KDE

ru999gol··on Next Generation KDE Plasma Notifications
every few weeks KDE forgets all my panels because of connecting/disconnecting external displays and KDE having horrible multi display support. KDE is so full of bugs like that its really frustrating, like the task manager forgetting which screen they are on or shift getting stuck when connecting an external keyword, etc. etc. But I've made my peace with all the bugs being a fact of life, using it for 8+ years.
ru999gol··on We got banned from PayPal after 12 years of business
I don't really believe this myself, but HN just loves it if you defend corporations doing evil shit. They are all gullible fools on here and I just had some fun manipulating them.

I too, wish governments would get their shit together and regulate them. The corrupt governments (especially US) of today wouldn't even regulate regular banks, quite the opposite.

ru999gol··on We got banned from PayPal after 12 years of business
There are lots of horror stories about Paypal, but there is an obvious problem, nobody is going out of their way to write a blog post about how Paypal always worked for them. You can find pretty much the same horror stories about any Bank or credit card company.
