ru999gol··on Don't Use VPN Services
that's an astonishingly idiotic argument, most of what he talks about also counts for your ISP too. They might log everything too and not tell you about it, but at least my ISP never made their whole business case around protecting my privacy.

And also what exactly would be their incentive in building up their infrastructure to facilitate this logging, do you have any idea how much storage space each VPN node in their network would need just to log everything?

And even if they were to log everything you are still sharing a IP with hundreds of other people making you less identifiable to at least the websites you are visiting.

100% FUD

ru999gol··on Disney+ streaming uses draconian DRM
While some streaming services might work with Linux, almost all will not show HD or better quality. Just torrent everything, its so much easier, this DRM clusterfuck just gives you less reason to feel bad about it.
ru999gol··on Iraq introduces nightly internet curfew
Exactly, as long as it doesn't manifest itself in exactly the same manner as north koreas dictatorship, everything is fine. sticking head back in the sand
ru999gol··on Apple Removes HKmap.live from the App Store
> Corporations are not robots. Apple is run by people, and specifically people who are much more knowledgable on this subject than the average consumer. They should feel some level of social responsibility.

Sometimes I wonder how many instances to the contrary people need to get this falsehood out of their heads. Corporations are only beholden to their shareholders, if any one person at Apple (including the CEO) is not at all times acting solely to maximize the profit to their shareholders they will be replaced by someone who will. The government has to force corporations to their will through tight regulations, consumer protection and anti-trust legislation. Why are all corporations spending this incredible amount on political corruption/"lobbying", its because all these things work.

ru999gol··on Iraq introduces nightly internet curfew
It has not really anything to do with human nature, its the power structures in the west that have vested interests to shape the mainstream narrative. Some atrocities are getting coverage, its not at all arbitrary which ones. Its more a sign of how incredibly effective they've become in pacifying the entire population in the west through media and politics, institutional corruption, sham elections, etc. Western democracy is beyond broken, will never get fixed and things will only get worse. But I agree with the majority of people who can still form coherent thoughts in their minds, much easier to just stick the head in the sand and deny that what I'm stating is demonstrably true.
ru999gol··on Apple Removes HKmap.live from the App Store
In principle code signing is a good idea, this way Apple can ensure an improved security standard over their competition.

But the downside is of course that Apple is in control, and like any corporation it will do things with that power that are unethical, immoral, anti-competitive, anti-consumer, etc. to the fullest possible imaginable degree.

Its like when you buy a DRM protected piece of content and that company revokes access in the future. Its entirely predictable and preventable.

Customers buy DRM content all the time and they buy Apple products instead of phones that give you freedom. Ignorance is not an excuse, I won't blame Apple, they aren't people, they just do what is natural in all corporations, I blame people/consumers, they deserve every single last bit of totalitarianism that is coming their way.

not a bad joke at all actually, but HN is just too far all up their own asses
ru999gol··on Vue.js v3 released (pre alpha)
I'm curious, I'm maintaining a similarly sized React app. What are the benefits of Vue (2) over React?
ru999gol··on Calibre 4.0
I would argue its always better if people form their own opinions, so I just suggested that people should look it up themselves and come to their own conclusions.

in truth of course the US government is doing exactly the same thing all the time, standard practice.

ru999gol··on Google to stop showing news snippets for French users
I fail to comprehend why this being done across the EU is supposed to make any difference? Its not like there were competing news outlets across the EU due to the language barriers. What after the EU implemented it and it still isn't magically working how you deluding yourself into? We just have to make it international then? No its exactly as foolish as everyone with half a brain has been saying and warning everyone for years and its only hurting smaller EU internet companies (if there are still any at all left under the many disastrous EU decisions).
ru999gol··on Google to stop showing news snippets for French users
That's not really the question, the news sites will give Google explicit permission to use their content while not granting the same usage rights to any other smaller EU-based search/news-aggregation service.

That's why every single person who knows what they are talking about has warned about this law from the beginning, but they were all ignored. Now this deals incredible damage to the future of EU internet companies and helps established big US corps. Everyone knew that, its just business as usual with the corrupt to the core and incompetent EU.

ru999gol··on Public Opinion in Authoritarian States
I love when HN is talking about politics, they are so completely, thoroughly, wrong about every single aspect of it, at all times, its mind bending.
ru999gol··on Bike crash left Spokane man unconscious, so his Apple Watch called 911
extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

A magical, invisible, omnipresent, omnipotent "all known laws of nature defying"-being that answers prayers, requires significantly more evidence than a small effect in some meta study.

ru999gol··on PyTorch – Tensor computation with strong GPU acceleration
I don't see much of a reason you want to clutter your code with that, if you need a wrapper around pytorch use fastai not some obscure library nobody has ever heard about.
ru999gol··on Why I Write Games in C (yes, C)
I think he is the perfect example of why I don't care what those C (or minimalist subset C++) programmers have to say. When you actually see how he works, how much time he spends debugging his messy code. They are all sooooooo far away from what I would describe as remotely good, clean code. And all so full of themselves too of course.

I liked Handmadehero for this reason, he is so arrogant and certain about how to properly write code, but when you actually see how he codes, what mess he produces and how long he spends live debugging it all the time. He constantly finds bugs in code he wrote earlier, etc. Yet he is so totally unable to find anything remotely wrong about the way he does things, and that there might have been some ideas invented in the last 30 years that could make him more productive.

I have zero respect for those types of programmers. I would quit any job instantly if I ever had to work with guys like this.

ru999gol··on Leon Sans, a geometric typeface made with code
that would be interesting if "made with code" was true. In reality this is not anywhere near close to what I would dare to describe as "made with code": https://github.com/cmiscm/leonsans/blob/master/src/font/uppe...

ru999gol··on Software Vulnerabilities in the Boeing 787
If Boeing decides to cut costs by using a single network for their entertainment, communications and flight control, who is there gonna be to tell them no? You would assume there is some oversight by independent security researchers who review these planes security, but this assumption seems unsubstantiated.

In reality, how is this separation of critical networks looking like exactly? MAC address filters? Are they air-gapped? I would venture to guess, nobody that isn't bound by an NDA knows.

ru999gol··on Google Forcing Nest Cameras’ Visual Indicator Light To Be On
I'm the total minority here obviously but anyhow..

First of all if you have a camera indicator light that you can turn off in the software what you have is a very fundamental lack of understanding in the first place. There is no point in indicator lights at all if you are let them be controlled by software.

Second anyone who is using a cloud camera has automatically forfeit all right to his or her privacy, if you are this monumentally idiotic this insanely stupid to trust a random cloud provider with hundreds to thousands of hours of footage of your private home, you are so irresponsibly ignorant you should be arrested for it. Your children should sue you for the horrible privacy violation you committed on them and you should have to go to prison.

ru999gol··on With Microsoft Dumping MS Office, Consider LibreOffice for Your PC Office Suite
no you are not alone, OpenOffice/LibreOffice has always been just plain and simple a terrible piece of software. The license alone can not make up for it. From the icon set, to any of the most basic UX/UI, the experience is just horrible. I could sit here talk for hours on end about how horribly broken it is, that it can't even render fonts correctly (kerning anyone?) to how it can't format anything correctly (and people complain about Word oh boy try libreoffice and will you will know what pain looks like!). Even if I would take 10 times as long doing the same exact document in LateX I would still prefer that (or some closed alternative like gdocs ofc.) over this dumpster fire.

ru999gol··on Game Source Code Collection
you have a simple choice: either have those collections be kept and preserved, OR have them disappear forever. We can all be grateful we at least have one non-profit who does give a fuck at all, no for-profit business will ever do any preservation work like it.

Gutenberg is only preserving public domain works, MANY are lost to humanity way before that.

ru999gol··on Report on the technical vulnerabilities found in Huawei 5G [pdf]
I bet that's just the usual chinese quality in manufacturing in general, the actual backdoor is just the hardcoded ssh key.

And thats their enterprise infrastructure equipment stuff, can you even imagine how their android firmware must look like, holy shit.

ru999gol··on Report on the technical vulnerabilities found in Huawei 5G [pdf]
Its a pretty good indication how easy its gonna be to find a memory corruption vulnerability. There are very few C programmers that I would trust to write secure code at all (none of those would ever touch those functions), yet alone with critical infrastructure equipment like this.
