ru552··on Jupiter CEO Quits $68B Firm to Sit at the Beach and ‘Do Nothing’
you left out the Molly when referencing a rave so believability takes a hit, but the end satisfies so it can be overlooked
ru552··on Sex is going out of fashion?
Why all this talk about sex for "entertainment"? Am I in the minority since I have sex because I have an urge to do it? It's never been about entertainment in my brain.
ru552··on Musk SEC Filing
Say I find a house for sale that I think is at a really low price (I want to flip it), but I can see it has some termite damage on a corner. I don't see damage anywhere else and the owner signs a legal document that the termites are in less than 5% of the house. I think I can fix the termite damage and then turn a profit so I enter into an agreement to buy the house. Before we complete the transaction, I start to notice signs that the termites might be worse that initially thought. I ask to have an inspector come in and determine how much of the house is infested with termites. The owner is denying my inspection request. I inform the owner I won't complete the transaction until I get a termite inspection of the property. The owner's friend owns the local newspaper so they run a story about how I can't afford the house and I'm trying to get out of the purchase. Hi, I'm Elon Musk, but I'm buying a house and not Twitter.
ru552··on Musk SEC Filing
He's going pretty hard on the 5% fake accounts that Twitter reported. I would probably do the same if I were in his position.
ru552··on The Wisdom in Kung Fu Panda
They were all susceptible to the dreaded nerve attack. Po, not so much.
ru552··on The Hidden Life of Trees: What They Feel, How They Communicate (2018)
Yes. Magic School Bus already did this episode.
ru552··on DigitalOcean acquires CSS-tricks
They can sprinkle some tasteful adverts on the Flexbox article and make their money back in < 03 years.
ru552··on Words known better by males than females, and vice versa
N = 388
ru552··on Apple contributes to OBS to support screen capture using ScreenCaptureKit
It's actually some of the best software I've used for streaming. Also, the feature to record a browser tab is a life saver when I'm double booked and don't want to miss content from a meeting.
ru552··on Ask HN: Should I accept the free Windows 11 upgrade?
The thing holding me back from the win11 upgrade is turning on my TPM. Not a fan.
ru552··on Ask HN: Career change for elderly UK ex-convict?
Any suggestions on good recruiters in the US?
ru552··on Tardigrades walk like insects 500k times their size
I think they were just trying to express that animals generally change their gait as they increase speed. These specific animals do not, which is akin to insects.
ru552··on US ‘closer to civil war’ than most would like to believe, new book says
The defining characteristic of the United States is that it didn't work.

The SYSTEM (the US Republic) worked. The system is resilient by design and performed as expected to deliver the appropriate output on the input it was given.

ru552··on The quiet battle raging around open banking
I work around this sector. Big banks sell data to data brokers the same as telcos do. It's unlike Facebook selling your data because the people buying it aren't trying to target you specifically. They are looking for market trends. You are usually aggregated around your demographic. Essentially, the banks are selling the spending behaviors of demographic X. This type of anonymous data is important to businesses like Nike and Coke because it informs their advertising messages.
ru552··on NoSurf – A community of people against digital addiction
you gotta fish where the fish are
ru552··on Why is China smashing its tech industry?
I think it's because they want their best and brightest working on physics, materials, technological breakthroughs, etc., instead of ad tech.
ru552··on We Built a SaaS with React and AWS
This is a nice write up on your product build. I expected a shil for AWS or React, but I was pleasantly disappointed. Thanks for sharing!
ru552··on Malware Makers Using ‘Exotic’ Programming Languages
Go, Rust, Nim, and Dlang are the "exotic" languages. I can't really see the case for calling either Rust or Go exotic. I thought this was going to be an article about a new language some large threat group cooked up, but it's just a list of incidences where Go was used to rewrite some loader code/etc..
ru552··on Lethal Autonomous Weapons Exist; They Must Be Banned

ru552··on Lina Khan, Big Tech Critic, Will Lead the FTC
Why would a Dem controlled President, House, and Senate care to preserve your so called “conservative christian causes”?
ru552··on Go 1.17 Beta
Added a new testing flag -shuffle which controls the execution order of tests and benchmarks.

That's a fun one

ru552··on Freshly made plutonium from outer space found on ocean floor
This may explain why that fish walked out of the water so long ago.

Earth may have been a cooling tank for spent fuel rods used by an alien civilization. Ocean water levels depleted as a result of the cooling process which exposed the land masses. Radiation from the spent rods did radiating things to the surrounding organisms.

IPSO FACTO, we're a result of the super powers bestowed to our watery ancestors.

*edit /fiction ... because some people took this as super serious

ru552··on YouTube TV removed from Roku channel store amid Google contract dispute
You are correct. You can still watch youtube videos on your roku. New subs to Youtube TV will not be able to get the Youtube TV app on roku going forward.
ru552··on YouTube TV removed from Roku channel store amid Google contract dispute
Read the article. This specifically has nothing to do with financials and all to do with, what some consider to be, a large over reach by google.
ru552··on Problems with low DNS TTLs
You got the use case right, but I think you're still thinking about it wrong. In-use public DNS changes aren't something that just crop up and need to be done immediately.

Eg. Five days from now, I'm going to make an infrastructure change that will affect public DNS. Today, I lower my TTL on affected records. Five days later I make the public changes, still using the lower TTL. Once I am satisfied my change will stay in production, I modify TTLs to be more sane.

ru552··on CS193p: Developing Apps for iOS
The course linked here is a good one. It teaches SwiftUI and Swift which are what you will use to develop on AppleTV.
ru552··on CS193p: Developing Apps for iOS
This is a pretty dramatic take. You can get a brand new mac mini with an M1 for <$1000. The price drops significantly (<$500) if you get a refurb or pick up a used one on ebay. $500 may still be a lot of money, but it's not "rich" money.
ru552··on CS193p: Developing Apps for iOS
The GP's question was about learning IOS dev. For that, you only need the Mac. There is a simulator built in to Mac dev tools so you don't have to have an iphone. The developer account also isn't needed to learn. You only need the $99/year account to publish apps to the app store.
ru552··on World's busiest international and domestic air routes
Disney World is still highly restricted. Masks are required at all times. Park capacity is handicapped. Hotel services are limited. Ride capacity is restricted. Etc.
ru552··on We rendered a million web pages to find out what makes the web slow
https://catchjs.com/Blog/PerformanceInTheWild — actual link to the people that did the study. Itnext.io just ripped it off with a small credit at the bottom.
