Working on the future of aviation training

rtrunck··on Three years ago, I sold my startup because I was an idiot
While I don't have any real-life experience myself, most deals would include a non-compete agreement for a certain amount of time.
rtrunck··on Apple ditches NVIDIA, goes with ATI for their desktop lineup
I'm not totally sure Apple has ditched NVIDIA for long - there are reports of Fermi based graphics cards working. Apparently the GTX460, GTX470 and GTX480 all work.

http://www.electronista.com/articles/10/07/03/imac.and.mac.p...

I have also heard other reports of users verifying they work, for both real Macs and hackintoshes.

rtrunck··on Drug Wars, TI-83+ inspired game coming to your iPhone
Well, I hope you make it to the iPhone, but, without Apple's approval it is still only a hope.
rtrunck··on The Acceleration of Addictiveness
If one has to abstain from society's norms to live appropriately, then I imagine it'll be increasingly difficult to make a living for one that abstains, at least in any area based on technological change. E.g., Paul would have a harder time conducting an effective business (or even perhaps being as well informed as an investor) involved with iPhone Apps. Not to say one must make a living on the technological fringes (that become the societal norms), however, such a course is limiting for the abstainer, for better or worse.
rtrunck··on [dead]
Well, using a generational milestone doesn't really work well here. That's like saying every Ford these day, with so many models before it, should be flawless.
rtrunck··on YouTube's thoughts on Flash and the video tag
I particularly like this part:

"While WebKit has recently taken some steps forward on fullscreen support, it's not yet sufficient for video usage (particularly the ability to continue displaying content on top of the video)."

I.e., we need to put ads over the videos.

rtrunck··on Users report 'fault' on iPhone 4
Same here - I simply cannot reproduce the problem others are having... I had a 3G before and my reception is much better with the iPhone 4.
rtrunck··on WWDC vs Google I/O
Interesting comparison. I wonder how many people attended each of the respective events? Could the lines, price, "you're lucky to be here", etc. be based on supply and demand? I mean if WWDC sold out in 8 days AND they charged almost 4 times more, there has to be some issue with supply and demand.
rtrunck··on Antitrust inquiry into Apple over Section 3.3.1
"[O]nly Apple's programming tools." This is completely wrong. Apple isn't restricting anyone from using, e.g., Textmate, they are requiring use of c/c++ and objective-c. These languages run on many other platforms, obviously.
rtrunck··on The Official Verdict in the stolen iPhone Case (Calacanis)
Others (e.g., techcrunch.com) have said that they would have published about the iPhone prototype but not have paid for it. This wouldn't make any difference. The California statute includes buying, acquiring, POSSESSING, or Concealing stolen property a crime. Money need not have changed hands, at all.
rtrunck··on Police Seize Jason Chen's Computers
"Known stolen property"

When was that ever established?

rtrunck··on How can the iPhone SDK be NDA'd?
It is a simple matter of contract law - it is an exchanged for bargain. In consideration of you getting access to the SDK, etc., you are agreeing to a non disclosure clause and paying $99, among other things. If you don't want to enter into that agreement, don't.

Shrink wrap licenses and related items are generally enforceable.

rtrunck··on AT&T and Others Announcing Rival to Apple App Store
It is humorous that the article mentions the "fragmentation" of app stores... Apple is unilaterally dominating the app store concept, maybe the others are fragmented, but Apple owns it.
rtrunck··on On how Google Wave surprisingly changed my life
Please!

rtrunck··on Apple's Mistake
Most of Apple's policies handling the app store make me somewhat believe they wanted their original plan to succeed, namely, making developers write web applications and not opening up the iPhone to native development.
rtrunck··on [dead]
I agree - not a very good list at all. Jeff Atwood and no Alan Turing or Donald Knuth? Really?
rtrunck··on Wolfram Alpha Miscalculates What Its iPhone App Should Cost
Agreed - it was a great reference.
rtrunck··on Wolfram Alpha Miscalculates What Its iPhone App Should Cost
I find it humorous that the Tech Crunch author notes a typo while creating a few of his own, e.g., by spelling "default" incorrectly. One who notes a typo should to not to create one of their own, if only to save face.
rtrunck··on Software Patents: A Personal Story
This isn't completely correct. It does work if the counter-suit claims are valid and encompassing - sanctions in the legal process can provide significant leverage, especially because the "patent-trolls" are heavily involved with patent attorneys.
rtrunck··on Judge Orders Google To Deactivate User's Gmail Account and Disclose Identity
New business idea: start a email service similar to Gmail and operate it in a country with a more reasonable judiciary and/or better privacy rights.
rtrunck··on Ask HN: Feelings of regret over career path?
I went a somewhat similar path. I studied Computer Science in undergrad and wasn't sure if that was the route I wanted to take, so I went to law school (three more years of college also sounded fun). I enjoyed my time at law school, especially its relation to philosophy and quasi rule-based systems, inter alia (oh yeah, you pick up some Latin in law school).

However, after a few years out practicing patent law, I miss the hacking, startup, engineering, etc. and related cultures. I obviously took a somewhat circuitous route, but now realize how much more one can do in life hacking things.

Even in patent law, which is highly related to technology and, accordingly, startups, you are just another cog in the creation system, not yourself creating. I find software much more liberating philosophically and mentally. However, practicing patent law does have many positive attributes, e.g., staying abreast of technology is part of your job duties.

I am now heading back, both mentally and hopefully soon career wise, to everything hacking and startup related. My time spent away obviously helped my skill-set in other areas, but, hacking is something too hard to stay away from full-time. Good luck on your journey. I do not think you will regret any path you take.

rtrunck··on Ask HN: Review my startup, HipHopGoblin.com (Pandora + HypeM + Hip Hop)
I agree, this site will likely violate various copyright laws, in the US and abroad. Check out http://www.soundexchange.com/ to find out information on how to comply in the US, etc.
