rthomas6··on Ask HN: What are the “lost arts” of our field?
As an outsider to web dev, I think there's a lot of wheel reinventing going on in web technologies over the past 10 years or so, and we still haven't fully caught up to where we were.

XMPP was a federated instant messenger protocol that worked extremely well and was widely used. It generally worked better than Element/Matrix or MS Teams in my experience. It was used by over 10 million people by 2003.

Adobe Flash. It had a lot of security and usability issues, but HTML5 has still not caught up to it. Any bright 15 year old could spend a day and make their own game.

Makefiles. People hate on them, but if you get around their weird syntax and other eccentricities, it's hard to find a better build system. They've been around since the 70s, and I have not seen another build system achieve feature parity.

rthomas6··on Ask HN: What are the “lost arts” of our field?
Binary is used often by embedded programming/FPGA dev types. I use binary and hexadecimal every day.
rthomas6··on Ask HN: Any Vim users who are sticking with Vim over Neovim?
I'm using neovim purely for the Telescope plugin
rthomas6··on Wells Fargo customers scramble after deposits disappear from their accounts
Between stuff like this and the fraud, why would anyone still use Wells Fargo at this point?
rthomas6··on Ask HN: How to signal that I'm an “easy-going” engineer when interviewing?
You could say that you are a team player who cares most about getting things done as effectively as possible, and have no qualms working within whatever work environment or tech paradigm in order to do that. You are good at all of them. You are mission-focused, and willing to take on as much or as little ownership as needed in order to accomplish the mission.
rthomas6··on Man spends entire career mastering crappy codebase
Embedded programming is this 99% of the time. Abstracting hardware away is a silly notion. Docker? Cloud? Hard to do when your code only runs at all on one specific custom board. The protocol you wrote to talk to that one chip isn't working? Time to break out the oscilloscope and look at the actual data going to the pins.

rthomas6··on Reinventing the E.R. for America’s mental-health crisis
Well, for one thing we are all fatter, and the prevalence of depression in obese people has been found to be much higher than in healthy weight people. We are also more sedentary.

For another, most of us spend a lot of time on social media, the usage of which, at least for some demographics, has been strongly linked to depression. Also, due to screen usage and even LED lights interfering with melatonin production, we are getting one hour less sleep on average. That is actually an unreported crisis if you look into the effects of losing even one hour of sleep a night consistently.

Then there is the deterioration of social structures and "third places" such as church, clubs, and other social gatherings, which are shown to reduce depression.

rthomas6··on A Compressive Light Field Projection System (2014)
Interesting and seemingly overlooked multi-viewer glassesless 3D display technology.
rthomas6··on Water so pure it will kill you
I think I agree with you that distilled/ultrapure water wouldn't be harmful, but I think it would be okay only due to consuming electrolytes in food. I bet the amount of salts/minerals you need in food increases if you only drink distilled water. And I bet if you fast and only drink distilled water, you would eventually get sick/die.
rthomas6··on Reddit.com appears to be having an outage
I would like to participate there, but it is invite only, last I checked.
rthomas6··on Reddit.com appears to be having an outage
Nah, floods of new users have come before. The lack of images, politics, and drama, combined with the "boring" design drives the undesirables away, leaving behind people who like talking about tech and other interests.
rthomas6··on Messages that can only be understood under the influence of psychedelics
I haven't done any psychedelics but I spent a lot of time meditating a few years back, and I experienced something like this on a smaller scale. It wasn't quite as profound as "thousands of years" or anything, more like, subjective hours over the course of 5 minutes.
rthomas6··on Third-party Reddit apps are being crushed by price increases
There is a mobile-only client called troddit.com that is really good. It shows what could have been possible with pure browser client on mobile. Not only is it waaaaaay faster, the UI is better too.
rthomas6··on A chiral aperiodic monotile
I wish I could buy ceramic Penrose P3 tiles to put on my floor or wall. They 2 different tiles instead of 1, but they're simple diamond shapes, and they tile aperiodically.
rthomas6··on Health officials delayed report linking fluoride to brain harm
Actually, the article says the report says harm happens at 2x the current recommended fluoridation level.
rthomas6··on Social media can be a ‘profound risk’ to youth, surgeon general warns
Agreed, but only with people they actually know in person.
rthomas6··on Social media can be a ‘profound risk’ to youth, surgeon general warns
You don't know how old exactly OP's kids are. There is a big difference between 13 and 19.
rthomas6··on Legend of Zelda game sells 10M copies in three days
I feel like all they would have to do is make it have Switch-level performance on handheld, then go to 4k only when docked.
rthomas6··on Legend of Zelda game sells 10M copies in three days
Yes, and seeing the Steam Deck makes me excited for whenever or if ever they finally make a Switch 2. Surely 6 years and multiple GPU generations is enough to let me play the Zelda games in 4k.
rthomas6··on An IBM computer learned to sing in 1961
They even nailed the headrest screens on the space "plane"! The lunar landing scenes are also mind blowing when you realize the film was released before the actual moon landing!
rthomas6··on Ask HN: Suing Facebook in small claims?
It is supposed to. It is supposed to be the exact same codes. If that is not the case then you were mis-billed, which according to that book is a common occurance.
rthomas6··on Ask HN: Suing Facebook in small claims?
There is a book I recently purchased called "Never Pay The First Bill". It covers this exact kind of scenario and tells you what to do step by step, all the way up to small claims court, though you usually don't need to go that far. Highly recommended.

More than likely you're going to need to get an itemized bill from the hospital listing the actual icd-10 charge codes and amounts for each service. Then you will need to cross reference this with your insurance's Explanation of Benefits document, which shows what the insurer paid for each code and the remaining that you owe. If there are any codes missing, there has been a miscommunication between the hospital and insurance, and the insurance was not billed for something. It is also possible there will be errors in the codes themselves, charging you for things you did not receive or received less than they said (charge code for 1 hr complex appointment when your appointment was 10 minutes). In this case, you will need to request your medical records, and cross reference them with the charge codes to dispute the wrong codes.

It also tells you how to deal with collection agencies.

> I find it very hard to believe an IQ test on a six year old is going to be much of a indicator of anything.

It is, though. To a disturbing extent. Individual IQ scores predict career success more than any other single metric.

rthomas6··on Microsoft plugging more ads into Windows 11 Start Menu
The next time I build a gaming computer, I'm gonna hold my nose and do it. I know Proton is good, but it is still a compromise for a lot of games.
rthomas6··on Generalizations of Fourier analysis (2021)
Ugh, I need to learn more math. How do I even start? I know multi variable calculus, I know the basics of linear algebra, and I know Fourier transforms. Yet this article is half gibberish to me.
rthomas6··on Yeah, about that active comeback...
Yeah but the Russell 3000 tends to slightly beat the S&P 500, and it comprises 98% of the market.
rthomas6··on Ask HN: What's the best obscure but useful CLI tool?
yes: literally just type y, or whatever string, over and over again.

  yes | annoying_interactive_install_script.sh
rthomas6··on Ask HN: What's the best obscure but useful CLI tool?
That's awesome. Seems like it would pair well with Make.
rthomas6··on Deviation Game: Draw in a way that humans can guess, but AI can't
I think a big difference is that humans have the ability to introspect, and examine their own mental processes to see how they drew a conclusion and what information went into it. We can then choose to update our behavior. Sometimes we "hallucinate" that information, but we do have some level of insight into ourselves. ChatGPT has no ability to examine itself, and in fact has no idea what it is doing. This, I believe, is a big shortcoming of neural nets in general. If we could overcome this hurdle, I think it would be a lot closer to an AGI.
rthomas6··on Vim or Emacs for C++ Coding?
If you are using Windows, and you don't know either editor, I would go with Vim because it's easier to learn and it works better in Windows. But if you want to get up to speed quickly, I would go with VS Code. Both Vim and Emacs take a while to learn enough to make it worth using. VS Code doesn't take as long to get to that point.
