rscott··on Show HN: Order pizza with random toppings
Anchovies are actually the only topping I don't include intentionally!
rscott··on Show HN: Order pizza with random toppings
I see what you mean, but no actually. I really just Googled "what color makes people hungry" and picked a red I liked!
rscott··on Show HN: Order pizza with random toppings
Sure! On the front end it's HTML, CSS, and jQuery - no hip JS frameworks nor complex build pipelines. Backend is node and express. The dominos API is https://github.com/RIAEvangelist/node-dominos-pizza-api, as mentioned below. Everything is hosted in AWS on Elastic Beanstalk on a few t2.micro instances.
rscott··on Show HN: Order pizza with random toppings
By “0” I mean “cheese only”. I could have been more clear, thanks for the feedback.
rscott··on Show HN: Order pizza with random toppings
The estimates are real and from Dominos. Thanks for the feedback, that's a good catch. I'll be adding that verbiage.
rscott··on iOS 11 Location Privacy: "Only While Using" is now always an option for users
Most of iCloud is encrypted at rest. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202303
rscott··on The End of California?
That's not what I would call simple. America has a long history of subsidizing farmers, which in turn keeps food prices down.
rscott··on Amphetamines Are Hiding in Your Supplements
Yep, Jack3d was pretty famous for that. The banned ingredient was DMAA, by the way. http://www.fda.gov/Food/DietarySupplements/QADietarySuppleme...
rscott··on My experience of interviewing for a job at Apple
"A few people asked me to write about my experience of interviewing for a job at Apple—the 700 billion worth company—so here it is."
rscott··on Now on Twitter: Group direct messages and mobile video camera
I use it on iOS and love it, but didn't feel like paying $20 for a Twitter client on the desktop.
rscott··on Now on Twitter: Group direct messages and mobile video camera
And yet it's still one of the best Twitter clients on any platform. Thank you, Loren Britchter.
rscott··on Now on Twitter: Group direct messages and mobile video camera
Then you'll absolutely love their "strategy statement".

"Reach the largest daily audience in the world by connecting everyone to their world via our information sharing and distribution platform products and be one of the top revenue generating Internet companies in the world."

rscott··on Kevin Rose Leaves Google Ventures
It's not a watch aficionado company. It is, as I understand it, a company that just rapidly builds out app ideas. An app incubator, you could say.
rscott··on Freedom in your computer and in the net [video]
Firefox seems to have a privacy policy that, by default, does things that aren't "free" - locale checking, talking back to Mozilla, etc.

Is there another "free" browser that supports webm?

rscott··on There is no fold
Sadly, because tweetstorms are getting more and more popular. I think it gives people a superiority feeling ("aha, look at how much brilliance I can convey in so few characters!"), whereas the reader is just frustrated.
rscott··on Amazon to Let Shoppers Bargain for Lower Prices with New “Make an Offer” Option
I doubt they would do this as it would reduce their already razor thin margins. And there is little incentive for them. I don't think many people would be willing to shop like that either, since the mindset of a purchase like that is sort of the anti-Prime - "just let it arrive whenever", as opposed guaranteed 2 day air. Long story short I just don't see that as a very Amazon-like move. That said, I would probably use it once or twice a year if such a feature existed.
rscott··on Ask HN: Do you know other firms like Valve or GitHub?
Not sure if this fits the bill, but I've always found the openness of Thoughtbot quite impressive. They have an open "playbook" describing how they operate and develop. http://playbook.thoughtbot.com/
rscott··on IBM Verse
Looks like a managed enterprisey version of Google Inbox/Mailbox app/Evomail. Probably does some natural language processing and keeps track of appointments, due dates, action items, etc.
rscott··on Amazon Prime Members’ Newest Benefit Is Free, Unlimited Photo Storage
I think that Amazon AWS/S3 is significant reason to not call this a sideshow.
rscott··on U.S. Law Enforcement Seeks to Halt Apple-Google Encryption of Mobile Data
Probably harder and takes longer than searching through a confiscated phone from a suspect.
rscott··on Government Surveillance and Internet Search Behavior
The quality of writing in this paper is quite terrible. I'm not sure what kind of review this went though, but I'm kind of shocked it got approved with data points named "After Prism Revelations". Revelations is an emotional word for that data descriptor.
rscott··on Honeywell Lyric thermostat
Source? Isn't that only true due to the fact that most people do not change thermostats in homes/apartments/condos they move into, or when they change HVAC systems?
rscott··on Take Buffett's Billion
It's not random. It's using a model to create what it believes the most likely bracket outcomes are. Those unique brackets are then distributed, obviously in order of most likely to least likely.
rscott··on Show HN: RosterMonitor - Real-time injury/news updates for NFL/NBA/MLB/NHL
Looks like he downloaded them all from ESPN.
rscott··on Why Python, Ruby, and Javascript are Slow
He gave a talk yesterday at Waza, Heroku's conference. I believe Heroku is planning on uploading videos of the talks in the coming days.

I've been interested in this talk since I saw it announced on Twitter, but prefer to watch/listen rather than go through these slides.

rscott··on Marissa Mayer Rolls Out a New Yahoo.com
I'm getting redirected to Yahoo's mobile site for some reason. Chrome 24 on Ubuntu 12.04.
rscott··on [dead]
Something very similar happened to me as well.
rscott··on Ask HN: Selling my profitable side business. Interest/Advice?
You can use Flippa.com for this sort of a sale.
rscott··on Kim Dotcom teases details of music service Megabox with preview video
"It's like Grooveshark but monetized."
rscott··on Ubuntu Will Now Have Amazon Ads Pre-Installed
Do you currently? Because I think there are already (12.04) some links to Amazon Instant videos in Unity by default.
