rrival··on How Much Traffic Does a Magazine or TV Mention Send Your Website?
In 2008, a Consumer Reports Money Advisor TV segment that featured http://www.PriceAdvance.com was syndicated to news programs in 15 states right around the holidays. That led to 125k+ installs of our toolbar.

In October 2007, the Wall Street Journal mentioned Startup Schwag on the front page, below the fold. That yielded ~15 signups for the ~$20/mo service, though admittedly its appeal was a bit niche.

rrival··on AdBrite will cease operations on Feb 1, 2013
There's a joke in here about adbrite ending up on fuckedcompany.com
rrival··on Tvshowsapp: Easiest way to download your favorite shows automatically..shhh
Take a look at SickBeard + SABnzbd+

Looks cool - logo immediately reminds me of Valvoline's - http://www.valvoline.com/
rrival··on Show HN: A Monthly Tee from your favorite YC startup
Take a look at www.StartupThreadsMonthly.com - they've been running for awhile and do a great job. American Apparel, stickers in the bag, etc. They've taken what we did with StartupSchwag to the next level.

Good luck to the hntees guys tho =) Really tight landing page.

rrival··on Ask HN: I loved Snow Crash and Daemon. What should I read next?
Neuromancer, Count Zero, Mona Lisa Overdrive. The Cukoo's Egg is good as well.

rrival··on Show HN: Startup Threads Monthly - Subscription Swag Service
I've paid $35 for a shirt at a concert. I'd pay $25 for this. At $15 + shipping that's the cost of an American Apparel tshirt with nothing on it. It's pretty reasonable imho.
rrival··on Show HN: Startup Threads Monthly - Subscription Swag Service
ValleySchwag went on to start GetSatisfaction. StartupSchwag (which I ran) shut down b/c after 31 months, it was time for other projects. Really excited to see this coming back and I've already signed up!
rrival··on Poll: Your preferred music for working?
+1 for Techno / Electronica (Chemical Brothers - Further, for example)
rrival··on Why The 99% Should Protest Against Y Combinator
Is it that evil is efficient or that being "good" (providing positive externalities in the process of delivering goods/services) is less efficient?
rrival··on [dead]
This is so irrelevant to hacking/startups.
rrival··on Ask HN: Founding a startup in New York City?
Office space with walls is limited but there's lots of coworking space - check out loosecubes.com to search it. Private reserved desks are ~$500/mo.

Apartments: nybits.com / streeteasy.com / nakedapartments.com. Look for no fee apartments. Brokers here take 15% of your annual rent as a commission and renters generally have to pay that. They'll also want to make sure you make 40x your rent. For example, $2500/mo apartment (~650sq ft in Manhattan) == prove you make $100k/yr with 2 years of tax returns, financial statements. If they could take a blood sample I think they probably would.

For camaraderie, go to events at GeneralAssemb.ly, check out meetups, check out Hackers & Founders.

rrival··on WhatWasThere - Put history in its place
Love the concept and execution. Manually cross referencing "Then and Now" pictures from the Denver Library of Congress made history tangible and finally interesting for me.
rrival··on Use Jonathan's card to buy yourself an iPad
Thought this was already revealed as a viral marketing campaign by starbucks:

http://www.coffeestrategies.com/2011/08/08/starbucks-and-the...

Not sure if that means there's more of a reason to exploit it or not, at least Sam's doing it for good =)

rrival··on Top Signs it's Time to Fire Your Client
... except it's at-will. If you can't negotiate a rate that makes you feel like you're not being exploited, and introduce boundaries that keep you sane, you're doing it wrong.

It's still in beta, but I'm finally ready to get some more eyes on this. I'd love any feedback / suggestions.
rrival··on Offer HN: Free in-house mobile ad exchange
This is similar to Allify.com (full disclosure, I'm involved in Allify), AppCircle from Flurry.com and Applifier.com's new mobile offering. ChartBoost.com is closely related - it's for mostly closed cross-promotion.

rrival··on MRIs of teenage brain waves can predict pop hits.
Yes. They're not targeting you.

Every major label has a deal with them, nearly every hit on the top 50 for the last 5+ years was pre-screened by management. The last numbers I heard were $1m/year for the service with a $20k/song screening charge.

rrival··on MRIs of teenage brain waves can predict pop hits.
HitPredictor.com has been doing this successfully for years without the brainwaves.
rrival··on Bridge.me meetings that call you
Yeah, TM is free, (R) means registered and costs ~$450+
