rrhyne··on What I Wish I'd Known About Equity Before Joining a Unicorn
One counter point... think about who is lobbying for changes. If it's primarily founders/executives at startups, know they do not stand to gain from removing these golden handcuffs. This bill will make turnover higher and hiring more expensive.
rrhyne··on What I Wish I'd Known About Equity Before Joining a Unicorn
The relief of the tax burden is all the legislation addresses.
rrhyne··on What I Wish I'd Known About Equity Before Joining a Unicorn
See my top level comment regarding legislation in progress to fix the issue.

Retirement Enhancement and Savings Act of 2016
rrhyne··on What I Wish I'd Known About Equity Before Joining a Unicorn
It has been and spent a very short time on the front page.
rrhyne··on What I Wish I'd Known About Equity Before Joining a Unicorn
No idea. It's so hard to find information on and no one, especially the valley rags are interested in reporting on it. I'm curious as to why the community thinks that is.

Really surprised how few people know about this legislation to fix the tax laws that cause one of the biggest issues with options.

https://www.gop.gov/better-way-startups/

It made it through the house and was approved by senate finance committee but is now stuck in a bill about retirement savings legislation.

Even finding information about the bill on the web or twitter is incredibly difficult. Please tweet, blog, etc and call your senators to support!

rrhyne··on Ask HN: What manual processes would you automate in your company?
You should automate the discovery of startup ideas by posting a thread here every few days.
rrhyne··on Ask HN: Should I learn Bootstrap 3 or 4 at this moment?
When you start on a new technology, you have to endure the breaking changes, lack of community support, and lack of skilled operators.

You also burn one of your technology chits. You get just a few as a startup. Selecting all bleeding edge technology could kill you. Would love to know where I read that. :D

rrhyne··on Ask HN: What web framework do you use? Why did you choose it?
yii2 php framework plus vue.js where inneed SPA like functionality.

Yii is the 3rd framework from the same devs, so it's modern and unincumbered by cruft. Scaffolding is fast, API gen is automatic and extension ecosystem is strong.

rrhyne··on CyberChef – A Cyber Swiss Army Knife
Cyber security is one continuously evolving puzzel, hence this very broad tool.
rrhyne··on InfluxDB 1.0 GA Released: A Retrospective and What’s Next
So, super obvious, but thought I'd just mention that influxdb is open source. It's likely that free version helped the contributor with his issue so he contributed back.
rrhyne··on Handcuffed to Uber
Most companies have a clause that states options expire on termination for cause.
rrhyne··on "Payload to Mars" Added to SpaceX Pricelist
I think it should read: "Call for Pricing" under Mars, as the Standard Payment Plan price is "to GTO"

rrhyne··on Unity Comes to Linux: Experimental Build Now Available
Personally, I'd rather they spend time making webgl production ready to ensure Chrome player support.
rrhyne··on Type.js – remedying CSS’s typographic oversights
Even when you do have access to all the best fonts (most honest startup designers don't) you still don't trust the font. You always kern.
rrhyne··on Type.js – remedying CSS’s typographic oversights
> trust designers to properly manually adjust the kerning themselves.

You've got it backwards. Never trust a font to provide your kerning, always adjust. Proper kerning is a fundamental tenant of good typography. Designers have always and will always manually adjust kerning.

rrhyne··on Type.js – remedying CSS’s typographic oversights
True, but fault != fix, which is why we used to spend hours kerning type in illustrator or photoshop.
rrhyne··on Type.js – remedying CSS’s typographic oversights
This going to be huge for designers. Lack of proper kerning in CSS makes web fonts feel like half of a solution.
rrhyne··on After California decriminalized pot, teen arrest, overdose, dropout rates fell
Many states try to heavily regulate alcohol. Where and when you can buy it is often frustration and varies from state to state.
rrhyne··on U.S. stock markets are rigged, says author Michael Lewis
The top post in this thread did so clearly.
rrhyne··on U.S. stock markets are rigged, says author Michael Lewis
What they discovered (as have others) are innumerable canceled quotes, which are the mechanism for price discovery. A bit more than wiggles on a graph.
rrhyne··on U.S. stock markets are rigged, says author Michael Lewis
HFT pushes incremental buy orders, which your sell order accepts (price discovery) but are canceled before they are filled. Knowing your limit, they then fill your order at your limit.

It's illegal for anyone to issue an order they don't intend to complete, but the HFTs get a pass for some reason or other that must end with quite a few zeros.

Sidebar: Apple does not allow you to provide a link to a website where you can market or upgrade a SaaS app that does not use the app store subscription model. Does anyone have any experience with denoting features which are locked to paid users without running afoul of this rule?
rrhyne··on CEO Aaron Levie Will Only Own 4.1% Of Box When It IPOs, Investor DFJ Owns 25.5%
Founders need to balance the amount of time it takes to acquire traction on the cheap, vs. via through the acceleration having a larger marketing and dev budget provides. Stagnation can kill and smaller founder equity is better than dead.
