rraghur··on I've started using Firefox and can never go back to Chrome
https://gitlab.com/NamingThingsIsHard/firefox/bifulushi

It's a fork of kintesh/containerise which seems unmaintained and had case problems.

It's not on FF addons site - so please satisfy yourself that it isn't doing sinister stuff before installing.

rraghur··on I've started using Firefox and can never go back to Chrome
basically that workplace uses teams & office

Teams web is crippled on FF with no video sharing & filters last I checked... Teams app is also crippled on linux - so the webapp is preferable.

Outlook's been broken the last week - just doesn't load and the service worker seems to get stuck in a loop.

rraghur··on I've started using Firefox and can never go back to Chrome
You'll have to pry Firefox from my cold, dead hands!

At the outset, yes, chromium based browsers feel snappier..

But, stuff that Chrome will not have and are absolutely essential

1. Containers... I use another unverified extension to match urls and automatically assign containers...

2. Ublock origin

3. Tree style tabs

4. Developer console... Edit and resend any request

That said, i still end up using chromium for teams and outlook 365 (pwa install feature is nice)... But that's only because i don't have any other options with those two

rraghur··on Set up your own VPN at home with Raspberry Pi – Wolfang's Blog
I cry behind my ISP that runs cgnat

I get around it with a cheap box on the cloud.. but it kills bandwidth and is brittle

rraghur··on KeePassXC 2.7.0
another tip - ff has an extension that adds the page's url to the title bar. This helps keepass autotype work better since it has a url to match

Ooh .... i didn't know about this podcast .. visited Hampi in the beginning of the month and it was great
rraghur··on Software defined USB port (Raspberry Pi pico RP2040)
So.... Would this work to make a qmk usb usb converter device?

I mean something like Solder a type A port to the pi2040, hook up a usb kbd there and then connect rpi2040 to the pc?

rraghur··on Tell HN: GitHub is experiencing an undeclared outage
I'm seeing random gnutls errors while pulling from repos.
rraghur··on Bitwarden compatible server written in Rust
I've tried pass and briefly flirted with running bitwarden rs but finally settled in keepass xc

I take care of the sync (syncthing) but anything would work.

I've never had issues with keepass's auto type so i wonder why it isn't as popular

Mobile used to be aam issue earlier but there's now a top notch implementation keepassdx that's on f droid

rraghur··on Jira: Razor Blades?
Jira itself isn't the problem.. it's a decent bug tracker + with a whole lot of 'agile/scrum/sprint' tracking/planning features on top. That somehow attracts a whole lot of 'process' focused middle managers who can absolutely kill any project... They want to 'use' jira - not focus on getting the product built. It doesn't help that most alternatives aren't enterprise-y enough

I've seen enough efficient but somewhat chaotic projects move to jira, followed shortly by a bevy of managers who're brought in to manage jira, followed by the usual agile theatre & process overheads that's been a 'kiss of death

You can argue that this isn't jira's fault.. but IMO, simpler tools require more work and act as a filter for the agile process minded types

PS: I've also had extremely good experience on teams where Jira was used.. and it's always been because the 'agile process' guy was capable.. however, those have been few and far between

rraghur··on V-USB – A Firmware-Only USB Driver for Atmel AVR Microcontrollers
Slightly tangential, but I recently wanted a mechanical keyboard converter dongle with QMK.. the pro micro was there only viable option due to supported stacks.
rraghur··on Windows Subsystem for Linux GUI
I sort of had heard of pipewire - but only to the extent that it was the next audio/video stack.. No idea about how far along it was. Also no idea that it had the BT headset thingy all sorted out.

Your comment made me go "huh! that's easy enough to finish off in 10 now" and provided the impetus I needed

rraghur··on Windows Subsystem for Linux GUI
oooh... Thanks! Thanks!... This was a breeze and I had to pinch myself to make sure that it was really working...

PS: In the past, I've wrestled with PulseAudio & BT dongles and my JBL headsets on Ubuntu. Banging my head on a brick wall would have been more pleasurable than that.

PPS: and today we have Pipewire on the front page!

rraghur··on High-powered motorcycle vibrations might impact iPhone camera
> The funny thing is that the act of writing down a summary of the journey, even with diagrams is usually enough for me to remember the whole thing.

This is well known.. planning navigation by reading maps engaged our brains actively.. following navigation basically makes us dumb spatially

rraghur··on Guide to Firefox Containers (2018)
I tried using this but it doesn't preserve case so the regex matches don't work..

Doesn't seem to be very active either

I eventually moved to one of the fields that fixes the issue but have to install that from xpi

rraghur··on How does Google Authenticator work?
Mine is aegis.. it's on f droid, completely open source, let's you backup your secrets so changing phones isn't a pita
rraghur··on India’s second wave of Covid-19 feels nothing like its first
Multiple models predict daily new infections to be anywhere between 20 - 30x under reported (uni of Michigan and I think u of w) There are enough and more ground reports from various cities of data from crematoriums being >10x more than official counts

There is large scale, govt backed effort to not report in a few states for ex UP which is most populous - govt was directing labs not to take samples. and no admission to hospital as corona patient until you provide RTPcr test id(this is from a friend who's in the state capital and father's in the hospital now). Death rates 10x official counts overall wouldn't be surprising at all.

rraghur··on “This Browser Is Lightning Fast”: Effects of Messaging on Perceived Performance [pdf]
I'm staying with FF since a) foss and user first and b) multi account containers

Nevertheless, I tried browser bench's benchmarks yesterday.. was shocked and saddened on how far FF has fallen behind..

rraghur··on K6: Like unit testing, for performance
I used k6 a few years ago to do some trivial benchmarks.. Nothing in depth.. But it was the best experience so far.. Easy to get started, good documentation and results well laid out.
rraghur··on Golang web service framework with DI, Telemetry and more
More ceremony & semantic load of course and you end up with having to define single use abstractions so that you can mock them in tests

I've long been in the pro DI camp and used to think that interfaces and brittle tests were unavoidable..

Only after i recently got into FP with f#, I've come to appreciate how i used to conflate good IoC design with DI usage.. I'm pretty sure that I'm not alone

rraghur··on Golang web service framework with DI, Telemetry and more
Discussion a couple of days around .Net 5 release announcement ended up going into di vs no di.. I'm on mobile but you can get to it from my comment history
rraghur··on Astonishing Performance of .NET 5
On the first part - I agree - and it's exactly this (MS's overwhelming influence on forcing direction) that keeps the .NET ecosystem back.

For ex, AFAIK, there was no community participation on DI Design and community feedback on DI design was rejected. Then it was made the default in ASP.NET.

rraghur··on AMD Ryzen 5 5600X Linux Performance
passmark shows about a 25% perf increase between R5 3600 and 5600x... the R5 3600 was available at launch at USD200 and in dropped to as low as 160 https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=AMD+Ryzen+5+3600&id...

25% perf increase is no doubt absolutely great but doesn't justify the price premium of 300USD... esp for a mass market, workhorse CPU

I upgraded to a 3600 after 10 years. Zen3 is the last gen CPU that'll work on my B450. I'll easily wait for a couple of years for the zen3 :)

rraghur··on What's in a Linux Executable?
Same here - I remember when you'd get games as .COM file with a nag screen/message etc that you could just skip over by flipping a jump instruction...

I remember being super puzzled when I tried that with a .exe and it didn't work
