rr888··on Negativity drives online news consumption
I agreed with the headline but now I think about it lots of interesting and or funny stuff too. Look at HN as an example.
rr888··on Ask HN: What has your personal website/blog done for you?
I started, I just didn't have the time and realized my blog was **. Looking around most other blogs are equally bad. There are some good writers out ther but the majority of tech people aren't.
rr888··on TypeScript 5.0
I agree TS is great. Not really multi threaded kills it for me though.
rr888··on Anyone else witnessing a panic inside NLP orgs of big tech companies?
Liberal arts education will one day be back in fashion.
rr888··on Guide to Java Virtual Threads
Can I forget about reactive programming now? Its been fashionable for the last 5+ years, I hate it. Kinda cool to play around with but just seems to double the complexity on everything.
rr888··on Credit Suisse sheds nearly 25%, key backer says no more money
Our HOA has upcoming $1.5mil bill coming for a big job.
rr888··on Credit Suisse sheds nearly 25%, key backer says no more money
The problem with all these banks disappearing is that there are continuously fewer and fewer choices left. Eventually there will be a handful of megabanks and nothing else. I guess this is happening in every industry these days.
rr888··on Show HN: Safe Data Changes in PostgreSQL
In the past I've done a few different ways but now I see strict infosec rules, That part is more important than where it runs. eg My last job we had a workflow where you needed a ticket approved by second eyes, which used CyberArk to create a new remote desktop running a DB IDE where you could do your business. Commands were tracked but no real restriction..

New firm you get your personal account temporary RW permissions via a centralized service.

rr888··on Show HN: Safe Data Changes in PostgreSQL
Its something every support desk should have. I often write my own tools like this. Ideally write a select query, execute it, note how many rows it selets, copy the where clause, start transaction, update using the where clause, execute, check rowcount matches what you selected earlier, commit trans.
rr888··on FBI chief says TikTok 'screams' of US national security concerns
Now you know what it feels like to be the rest of the world relying on American tech companies.
rr888··on How Californians are weaponizing environmental law to eliminate housing
In most buildings there is no concrete between walls but floors have a ~1 inch layer of lightweight-concrete, I think for fire resistance, its not solid so you hear every footprint.
rr888··on How Californians are weaponizing environmental law to eliminate housing
I'm not sure about connected, but I do like being able to walk the stairs to the apt, being able to open a door to a balcony. Its also less instrusive to the neighborhood than a tower which overlooks everyone.
rr888··on How Californians are weaponizing environmental law to eliminate housing
Actually its a good thing about our condo is independent heat pumps per unit so everyone gets their own air handler and ducts. Its expensive to replace each one individuall though.
rr888··on How Californians are weaponizing environmental law to eliminate housing
I live in one, it isn't that awesome. Lots of noise from neighbours, but the worst thing is the big fire hazard. The risk of fire means there is a lot of sprinklers everywhere which regularly get damaged and leak everywhere. Usually every 2-3 years in our building a sprinkler pipe will get broken or leak will appear and destroy a few units.
rr888··on Zero energy ready homes are coming
Well in my state generally the wealthiest people live in suburbs and pay all the taxes. The poorest areas are in cities and get the subsidies. So the suburbs are subsidising the cities. And that was before everyone started WFH so downtowns are now really empty.
rr888··on Zero energy ready homes are coming
> economically uncompetitive

How can you say that? Usually nice suburbs pay huge amount in taxes that subsidize urban cores.

rr888··on Graduate students at the University of Southern California have won a union
Tuition paid by grad workers are likely to go up to pay for their own wages.
rr888··on The perks workers want also make them more productive
I'd quite like a keyboard and mouse that is better quality that the $9 specials most companies prefer.
rr888··on The floppy disk just won’t die
Similarly its terrifying when you hear the drive clunking away on a bad disk when you know there will be an error before the screen shows it.
rr888··on Iran discovers world’s second largest lithium reserve
The main point is people in Northern lattitudes needs most of their energy in the Winter, especially winter nights. Its a very different problem to Southern states where peak energy use is hot sunny days.

As for distortions the biggest problem with retail users is that panels have changed the market but people still expect to use the old rules. Eg be self sufficient 320 days a year but expect eletricity on demand at the same low rates on the few days they need the grid. That isn't scalable and home solar people are getting an unfair advantage from the system, which is why utilities (rightfully) dont like it.

rr888··on Iran discovers world’s second largest lithium reserve
Utilities are huge financial organzations that have to provide secure generation and transportation over decades. Just because solar is cheaper now doesn't mean you can replace everything in just a few years. Also Solar might work great in California but Nebraska not so much.
rr888··on Tesla's next-gen electric motors will get rid of rare earth elements
Copper costs 6x Aluminium and is much rarer + in a car you want to be as lightweight as possible. You need a good reason to avoid it.
rr888··on Cucumber maintainer has been laid off
We tried it once and the semi-tech SMEs had no desire to write cucumber code so it ended up being the developers who hated writing in a second language. No real benefit.
rr888··on Ask HN: Has anyone started over outside of tech?
Is that like one day on a weekend? I actually thought that was normal (maybe the phone)
rr888··on Canadians think tipping is ‘getting out of control,’ new poll suggest
Doesn't France have a standardized 15% service charge.
rr888··on Canadians think tipping is ‘getting out of control,’ new poll suggest
> why the fuck am I paying you a 15% service charge for me

Service charge is like not tipping, actually I kinda prefer this to having to look the cashier in the eye and choose which tip button.

rr888··on Apartment rents fall as new supply hits market
Jersey City here. We're building 10,000 new apartments a year but everything is full and rents are up again this year, its probably 20-30% higher than pre-covid. The new construction has just attracted new crowds, it hasn't helped.
rr888··on Learn Vim (2021)
We have our own software SDLC with custom tools. Its kinda nice coordinating across a large organization, sucks to be using these custom tools.
rr888··on NY City front line workers to be main more than WFH
First time I've seen this come up. From a supply/demand point of view it makes a lot of sense. Lots of people prefer WFH jobs over on-site.
rr888··on Learn Vim (2021)
I learned vim when I picked up linux, now I work at a company with a customized emacs tool we have to use. Doh it never ends...
