rr808··on 500k facial scans at UK stations yield no arrests, 1 false positive
Its just a start though right? Most people here are male and aren't that scared to be out and about. The women in my life have a much different outlook on things, I really think CCTVs and AI can really help make things safer.

You can see with videos already helping to catch people (and potentially scaring people off from committing crime in the first place).

Yes its a problem in the US where its criminal system is inconsistent at best, but the UK at least has much fairer legal system.

rr808··on Linux support is coming to Snapdragon X2 series
Intel panther lake is already very close. Good enough for me to be happy with it.
rr808··on Amazon blocks Meta’s new Muse AI agent from shopping on amazon.com
It makes total sense for Amazon to block agents. It sucks having to manually check multiple sites for prices and delivery of something you want so is easier just to use Amazon which is usually very good. If people start using agents Amazon is less likely to get the sale and are more vulnerable to competition. Better to kill this trend off asap.
rr808··on Gemini 3.8 Live and 3.8 Live Extended Thinking
In Maps? Or is it Android Auto? I have Google built it. When I push the button on steering wheel I hardly know which layer I'm talking to.
rr808··on LG denies TV spying claims, says tracking and snooping concerns 'not true'
Everyone complains but realistically TVs are so incredibly cheap now, I can't believe anyone would make money from hardware alone. I mean a Samsung 55in 4k tv for $300 delivered for free is crazy, let alone the $179 insignia one.
rr808··on Muse – Meta’s personal AI agent
Tech is a rather minor part of the world of knowledge. How many languages do you know? Do you know the styles of Renaissance painters? Slept with super-model? Ever seen an elephant stampede? Meditated by the Ganges? Read thousands of stories? Climbed a mountain so high you need Oxygen? Tech stuff is so boring.
rr808··on How accurate have Ed Zitron's AI skeptic predictions been?
To me and most other non-West coast Americans its obvious he's right. Which is a good explanation of why SV has the resources and success it has because it can do things no one else believes in. While the rest of the world will always be catching up.
rr808··on How I find problems to solve as a staff engineer
I wish our most senior staff eng/architects actually worked on stuff that is useful. They love playing around with new technology that has nothing to do with our current platform or where we're going. Sometimes they'll try to fix some thing the last architect started on before they too move on to another job.
rr808··on Wi-Fi 8 is the first wireless upgrade in years that isn't chasing speed
Incidentally I ran cat6 to a few locations but its so thick and stiff I kinda regret it. The internet seems to think 5a is more than enough and 6 was a waste.
rr808··on Wi-Fi 8 is the first wireless upgrade in years that isn't chasing speed
Powerline networking is worth trying for this too.
rr808··on A week of using Codex more than Claude
Copilot and Devin. They're actually really good too.
rr808··on Hook, hold, harvest and hide: Meta's alleged strategy laid out in first week
Luckily we have rule of law here so if you say someone in particular needs to go to prison there needs to be a law that you have proven to break. Just because you dont like someone you can't just lock them up.
rr808··on France to ban unsolicited telemarketing calls
Me too. The problem is now I trust Meta with much of this instead of the FCC which is awkward for me. I use on Messenger and Whatsapp much more often for voice calls, and you know exactly who is calling.
rr808··on What happens if an entire class of workers loses faith in their careers
I'd say its more like about time we had a correction to make people realize markets dont always go up, money doesn't come easily and we all have to get back to working.
rr808··on What happens if an entire class of workers loses faith in their careers
I think 15 years of asset boom has made enormous fortunes not just for billionaires but for regular middle class folks and especially anything tech or finance related. When your investments make much more than your wages, its hard to care about your career but this is the norm now for lots of people around me.
rr808··on I'll be stepping back from leading product for X
I forgot twitter is part of SpaceX.
rr808··on Rust All Hands 2026 Retrospective
How long does a compile take? Because this was the biggest issue for me. I dont really like Python but the ability to make some changes then run it instantly is wild for me.
rr808··on The tiny holdout building in the middle of Macy’s is back in view
Not really. looks like they pay nearly $2mil a year every year right now already. You can look up Block 810 Lot 40 here: https://a836-pts-access.nyc.gov/care/search/commonsearch.asp...
rr808··on Is this the end of the once-mighty GoPro?
I'm just surprised that an American brand making electronics lasted this long. Even Japanese companies are giving up. No one can compete with China.

Apple somehow reigns supreme still. Anyone else?

rr808··on An Englishwoman who sketched India before photography took hold
It was amazing to see the blue sky coming out in Asian cities during covid. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-52313972
rr808··on Female US rower completes historic solo journey from California to Hawaii
Usual answer is to get away from the wife (or partner), but she doesn't seem married so I'm baffled...
rr808··on Modern decor may be straining people's brains
My parents lived in the same house for 40 years, my entire childhood was there. My grandparents (both sets) lived in their house for 50 years. I can't comprehend how Americans keep moving for jobs or to upgrade or to get to a better school district. Surely you want some permanence? Get to know your neighbors?

Edit yes I did move around in my twenties, but that stopped at 30.

rr808··on SpaceX wants to launch 100k more Starlink satellites for 100x the bandwidth
I think in most markets the advantage SpaceX has is it isn't paying huge fees for Spectrum, the frequencies it owns were very cheap. Eg in the USA I think the providers spent nearly $100 Billion on spectrum where SpaceX can compete without that cost.
rr808··on SpaceX wants to launch 100k more Starlink satellites for 100x the bandwidth
this thread is about satellites cluttering the night sky. Is SpaceX paying for this? Not the mention the CO2 emissions of all the rockets.
rr808··on USAA closed 51% of home insurance claims without making a payment in 2025
I thought I was a typical guy who bought insurance and hardly ever claimed. I was genuinely shocked after talking to people who regularly tried to claim all the time. "Nothing to lose right?".

After realizing I've really stopped buying insurance except a core of home, car and liability with high deductables. If you're a responsible person who is careful insurance really isn't worth the cost.

rr808··on After 7 years in production, Scarf has reluctantly moved away from Haskell
Scala was a dead end. Kotlin an obsolete workaround. Java though is now awesome, esp if you can ignore Spring. Should be more popular in the tech world.
rr808··on SpaceX wants to launch 100k more Starlink satellites for 100x the bandwidth
Its more the other way around. Its mostly used by the wealthiest few percent, the majority of the world has to pay for the damage it causes.
rr808··on Costco is the anti-Amazon
I dont like Costco, it epitomizes American over-consumption. Parking lot overflowing with oversized SUVs with people loading up oversized trolleys with food from food corporations to take back to their oversized fridges and storage basements.
rr808··on Rocketlab acquires Iridium
Compared to LA even NZ looks cheap
rr808··on Did my old job only exist because of fraud?
> Senior management routinely seem baffled that they could announce redundancies or hiring freezes, yet technology costs would continue to rise.

I dont think they're baffled, they just trying to show they're attempting to keep costs under control.
