rpledge··on ShowHN: QRSplice - Use animated QR Codes to transfer data between iOS devices
It's one way, but there is enough metadata so the receiver knows when it has the complete file.
rpledge··on ShowHN: QRSplice - Use animated QR Codes to transfer data between iOS devices
My QR code hack just went live, check it out. Send text data between 2 iOS devices with an animated QR code. It works pretty well until the file size starts to get big. Let me know what you think.

rpledge··on Research In Motion is dead
I'd be shocked if that happens. QNX has a pretty good business outside of Blackberry, their auto products are pretty sweet. I suspect if RIM does go the Windows Phone route (which I think makes perfect sense) that QNX will get spun out or sold again.
rpledge··on ShowHN: Login to any site by scanning a QR Code
Glad you like it. All those features are planned.

There is support for iCloud which tries to sync the database between phones. I've found iCloud syncing of databases to be slow in my testing, but it does seem to do it eventually. Speed probably isn't a big issue for day to day use, but it made testing the sync feature frustrating.

rpledge··on ShowHN: Login to any site by scanning a QR Code
I was working on this when google tested that feature. I actually started the project as a 2 factor authentication system but scaled it back to this version of the initial release at least. There's a chicken/egg problem with getting websites to adopt without needing the browser plugin.

I like your password idea, its a nice feature. I'll add it to my idea list. Thanks for the feedback!

rpledge··on ShowHN: Login to any site by scanning a QR Code
Android is in the plans. The main reason I started with iOS was that I had access to the devices.
rpledge··on ShowHN: Login to any site by scanning a QR Code
There's a browser extension (Chrome/Safari/FF) that does the hookup. Basically it talks to our server to request a QR Code. When the code is scanned, the users credentials are encrypted on the phone, sent to our server which passes them along to the browser extension.

I do have a version that doesn't require the browser extension, but that does require the website to add some javascript and do some backend work to enable it.

rpledge··on ShowHN: Login to any site by scanning a QR Code
The idea is to let users maintain a portable database of very strong passwords. Since the credentials are transfered when the QR code is scanned the user doesn't need to remember or enter a complex password. It also eliminates worries about keyloggers since no information is typed.

Nice app, I'm impressed!
rpledge··on Apple Conference Call
That's my guess. Or else they'll announce that they're starting a space program!

My understanding is that ably $66 billion is offshore. I really expected them to sit on the cash until the US government gave them some sort of tax amnesty

I'm not sure where you're getting the prejudice angle from, the link is merely information about a topic that was widely discussed here.
rpledge··on Show HN: Password validity hinting
Wasn't this kind of feedback the cause of the recent WPS flaw? How do you stop this from being used to brute force passwords?
rpledge··on I launched an iPhone app yesterday, and all I got were some stupid lessons
The app looks well designed, but the lack of sync features would be an issue for me. But I'm sure there's a good market for people that don't need to coordinate calendars between devices and people.

I had to change the title from: 'WE'RE BLOWN AWAY: This Startup Could Literally Change The Entire Software Industry' because it was making me queasy....

This is exactly what I was looking for this morning! I even started getting a quote from a site that charges for this service. I'm assuming I can use the results for whatever I please?
rpledge··on Show HN: Get a better job offer, anonymously - my weekend hack
Interesting idea. I'd like to see some stats when you get enough data, stuff like number of responses, number of people who found a job through the service, etc....

rpledge··on Why does that QR Code go to justinsomnia.org?
It points to his top level. He'd be sending traffic away from his site unless he managed to filter it somehow.
rpledge··on Node.js - A giant step backwards?
It takes some work to get used to the change in flow control, but it seems to be worthwhile (at least it has been so far for my project). Coming from a real time/embedded background seems to have helped me because typical those systems are heavily event based. I don't know if node.js will change the world but I think it's worth at least playing with just to get some experience with the programming model.
rpledge··on Login to your Google account by scanning a QR code
Oops, I guess I missed a file when I pushed. I'll try and fix it later today. Basically I'll provide an iPhone app that will read the code, check the signature and authenticate the device/user account. The idea is that a single iPhone app can be used to log into many different web sites (or be used as a second factor authentication). It's still "pre-alpha" for sure.

This is very similar to what I've been working on at qrauth.com

rpledge··on GoDaddy support for SOPA aftermath - daily domain transfer impact graph
I'm not crazy about this site either, they seem to have selected the dates they graphed very carefully:

http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=3407428

I agree with many other comments though, this is a poor metric for measuring how many people left GoDaddy.

rpledge··on Show HN: Logging in with QR codes (proof of concept)
I've been working on something very similar for a while now, good to see all the positive feedback in the comments. I have a very alpha version at http://qrauth.com

rpledge··on Kevin Rose: We Made Lots of Hiring Mistakes at Digg
Given that Digg's content was (at least in theory) community driven, there seems to be some sort of chicken/egg issue here.

The article is poor summary of the interview, which I saw replayed TWiTs live stream. While the quotes are accurate, the interview wasn't really about Digg

rpledge··on What is the single most influential book every programmer should read?
I though this was a great book too. It covers a lot of the stuff thats in Code Complete but without being a massive tome.

Yeah, this article is pretty poorly researched. Considering how much press the Kindles got it's kind of inexcusable.

It was allegedly offered to him before: http://www.mercurynews.com/ci_10769458?nclick_check=1

Of course, he was CEO of Google then. Now, not so much. I can see him wondering if a career in politics would work. I'm sure he's got enough cash not to care about the finical hit.
