I only have experience with Flow, but it's not decentralized. The developers claim it is, but they hold master keys to remove contracts from the chain.
I don’t think it’s baby shampoo because my partner and I both smell the shampoo, but she smells something else as well. She’s smelled the same smell since the day the baby was born, before we bathed her or put a diaper on.
I don’t know if this counts as a pheromone, but babies definitely emit _something_. As a recent father, I have had numerous people remark on how wonderful babies smell after smelling my child. I can’t smell anything. People who can smell this particular smell seem very perplexed that I can’t smell it.
What does a big truck have to do with safety features? To me, it just sounds like you’re happy to pollute the environment just so you’re sure to annihilate your counter party in an accident.
The paper says fisetin reduced the number of senescent cells in a sample. It’s not clear if that means the cells were eliminated or if the were prevented from entering a senescent state. Do you know the answer? The former sounds better than the later.
From reading that paper, the purpose of senescent cells is to prevent tumor growth. I don't know if I'd want to suppress or eliminate that functionality over a long period of time.
I don't think it makes sense to say you "lose" something. Yes, the properties of different spaces _are_ different, but these differences are intentional so that they can be used to study something useful. For instance, complex analytic functions have a number of properties that don't hold for real analytic functions, so you actually "gain" something. An example is the residue theorem. One interesting thing about the residue theorem is that you can use it to calculate the integral of a real-valued function that wouldn't be calculable using conventional calculus techniques. So not only do complex functions have a number of interesting properties on their own, they can also be used to expand what's possible in real functions.
Watching how poorly some professional athletes perform during long Covid recovery makes me highly doubt CFS as the root cause. Also, people have reported long-term loss of smell which also isn’t a typical post-illness or CFS thing.
You do need to pay capital gains on gifted asset using the cost basis the gifter acquired the asset at. This is a stable coin though, so if you’re in the US there should be little gain/loss if the stable coin stays stable.
I think we're talking about different things. I was responding under the assumption the commenter wanted to build their own market for trading inflation bets. If someone already did the work to accept money, make the market, and handle payouts then great, leverage that. That betting market exists because enough people wanted to bet on inflation prior to blockchains existing. However, there will be new things in the future that people want to bet on, and those new markets will be easiest implemented on a blockchain.
Just a for instance, I can create a betting market based on how many times my dog licks her butt during the day very easily on the blockchain. How can I do that using traditional means?
Allowing people to bet on inflation would be complicated. You’d need to take payments, hold their money like a brokerage, and have the ability to payout. The blockchain let’s you implement such a scheme in a few lines of code. Definitely simpler to do on a blockchain.
Both of my parents are in civil engineering and construction in NYC. As an outside observer, what I see is that the management of projects is not set up in a sustainable way and is just bad. The heads of important departments are political appointees. Most of the time, appointments go to political friends, not to competent managers with extensive knowledge of the field. Also, the assignments are constantly changing as elected officials change.
I don’t think the GP was arguing that “evolution cares”. Rather, I think they were saying that we evolved as part of a system that moved at a certain speed. Changes to that system were reflected as part of the evolutionary feedback mechanism. Now, however, we’re changing the system so fast, evolution has no hope of keeping up.
Regarding being asked about blockchains: I think people might just be trying to make conversation with the author because they know crypto is a place their interests intersect tech, and clearly the author has an opinion on the subject.
But how many of these “takes” can we see on HN? What am I supposed to take away from this? Personally, I don’t think farm animal sanctuaries solve a problem that’s interesting. There just isn’t much to gain by sharing my opinion on farm animal sanctuaries with others though, especially multiple times a day.
I think this is not a good take. An NFT is a use case. You might find them asinine, as I do, but that’s still a use case. It’s surprising that people think “programmatic money and token system” doesn’t have a use case. Clearly it does, and judging this nascent technology for not fundamentally changing the world yet is shortsighted. Imagine when the first vacuum tube transistor was invented. Maybe you could invent an 8-bit adder, but addition of small numbers was already possible. It took many decades to fully realize that you could, e.g., network computers and make the internet.
I think the lack of "getting stuff done" is due to the innovator's dilemma on a societal scale. The marginal gain of any additional project is just too small for society, as a whole, to care about.
This brings up an interesting problem with inductive arguments I’ve never thought of: how does one prove a base case is a sufficient starting point for induction? In the horse example, we know there can be groups of multi-colored horses so our intuition guides us to a counter example, but it seems like a detail like that could easily be overlooked for something more complicated.
This opinion feels to much like a cliche. Management needs to know what’s going on, even in well run companies. You might not like giving progress reports, because you feel like it takes time away from your job, but it’s possible that management is using the progress reports to better the company as a whole. For instance, if you’re behind schedule they can allocate more resources to your project, etc. I’m sure you have many anecdotes where management wasted peoples time. That happens often too.
