rozim··on Double bongcloud: why grandmasters are playing the worst move in chess
I guess my lament is with wish that ultimately it would never be rational to perform a short GM draw -- i.e. there would be some short-term incentive they lose out on, and they would have long term reputation damage e.g. who wants to support a GM known for short boring draws?

GMs resign at times, even when one might think there's a microscopic chance of the winning side making a mistake later.

In some universes there could be American football leagues, say, where teams might resign in the 3rd quarter when they are behind far enough, and want to avoid injuries - but I don't think the concept exists now, no football team has ever voluntarily resigned before the end of the game.

rozim··on Double bongcloud: why grandmasters are playing the worst move in chess
When one GM does it, yes, amusing.

But when both repeat to perform a Grandmaster draw they're kind of destroying the value to spectators, as in any other sport the fans would revolt if both teams were so willing to not put up a struggle.

Some tournaments have had restrictions and incentives against this at least e.g. you won't get invited back if you have too many GM draws, or the game has to have a reasonable length and the arbiter won't allow such a draw, or they reset the pieces and make you start over if you draw too soon...

rozim··on Google Play Music, Music Play Store and Music Manager are going away
This is what I'm using: - Raspberry Pi - Streaming server: MiniDLNA - Android client: Hi-Fi Audio

You can of course get your ripped music from Google Takeout.

I wanted a headless install, and MiniDLNA works great - you just install with apt-get and then point it to a directory tree of mp3 files.

Hi-Fi Audio costs $9 -- I could not find an equivalent free & ad-free player, though they must exist.

rozim··on Systemic Risk of Pandemic via Novel Pathogens-Coronavirus [pdf]
"Historically based estimates of spreading rates for pandemics in general, and for the current one in particular, underestimate the rate of spread because of the rapid increases in transportation connectivity over recent years. This means that expectations of the extent of harm are underestimates both because events are inherently fat tailed, and because the tail is becoming fatter as connectivity increases" ...

"Together, these observations lead to the necessity of a precautionary approach to current and potential pandemic outbreaks that must include constraining mobility patterns..."

"It will cost something to reduce mobility in the short term, but to fail do so will eventually cost everything—if not from this event, then one in the future...."

rozim··on Data Mining Reveals Factors That Lead People To Make Blunders in Chess (2016)
I enjoyed the paper but one thing they didn't seem to consider was the human-difficulty of the move e.g. sometimes long horizontal moves are harder to see (sorry, no reference, just anecdotal based on experience), so one could see later works that fold that in.

Also, they used endgames with IIRC < 7 pieces, so again, some derivative work might use middlegame positions and use engine analysis as an oracle, similar to Regan's work (http://www.buffalo.edu/news/experts/ken-regan-faculty-expert...).

rozim··on Feature comparison of ack, ag, git-grep, GNU grep and ripgrep
The table is misleading isn't it? It seems to imply that rg can't work recursively, but [1] states "..ripgrep defaults to recursive directory search...". I understand that the table might mean that rg doesn't have a flag to enable recursive search, but surely we care about features more than flags...

rozim··on Ask HN: What was the best CS paper you read in 2017?
I probably enjoyed 'Mastering the game of Go with deep neural networks and tree search' the most and especially appreciated the 'Methods' section where they go into a good amount of detail about their implementation.

rozim··on Mastering Chess and Shogi by Self-Play with General Reinforcement Learning
Yeah, that game was kind of different from the others - in the other games the feeling I got was that over time AphaGo's pieces got increasingly effective while Stockfish's pieces would get bottled up and lose their mobility.

rozim··on Ask HN: Do you carry a backpack? Which one?
I'm happy with my Chacabuco/32L and can't even remember how long ago I bought it.

Use it for: - city use, - "pack dad" use (carry extra jackets for my children), - day hikes, - carry on bag - ski bag (carry stuff on downhill ski trips)

Have thought about trying to do an UL overnight backpack trip with it for kicks.

Have taken it back once to Patagonia for free repairs, and another time for a free replacement of some plastic gizmo that fell off.

Nit picking: - The elastic shockcord doesn't work right for me - it seems more cosmetic and doesn't really cover the rare use case of wanting to, say, quickly strap on some sandals on the back and know they don't fall off (they did..).
