rozap··on Workers are spending over 6 hours a week botsitting AI, fueling job frustration
So we're now in this world where everyone is instantly 10x more productive at turning their thoughts into code. Now, think about the coworkers you've had that are middling to mediocre. Do you want them to have a tool that makes them 10x more productive?

That's what I wonder about, what happens to all those folks.

rozap··on Sam Bankman-Fried applies for a pardon from Trump
This is a good point. We should just let all the ponzi schemes that are currently underway ride. Maybe they made good investments that will return 100x. The only way to know is to not intervene.
rozap··on Meta launches Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp subscriptions
You're right it's a good thing, but I think they're maybe 10 years too late. The issue is that their product is hateful, non-functional, and my feelings toward the brand are probably more negative than any other brand I can think of. So why would I give them money? It's a tough sell.
rozap··on Hormuz crisis side effect: a sharp rise in container shipping rates
I spent $111 for two quarts
rozap··on The just-say-no engineer was a ZIRP phenomenon
Yes, this is happening. A friend of mine was telling me about a 25k LoC PR that was submitted by a product manager that he had to content with. And the politics are real - you can't just be like "no", but it's pretty tough to meaningfully review a 25k line PR, let alone from someone who knows fuck all about what they're doing and can't answer questions you might have.
rozap··on Greg Brockman interview [video]
Every billionaire is a policy failure. It's not a question of equity, the issue is that no one human should be that powerful. It's very obvious that its leading to the US's rather quick and colorful decline. A small cohort of very powerful people are moving elections and policy to enrich themselves, everyone else be damned.
rozap··on Shunning AI is the human choice
Saying that shunning the machine that is usurping human creativity and intelligence is "anti intellectual" is pretty funny

I'm not an AI hater but the implication of your comment is that being on the AI train is the intellectual position, which is wild, given the AI hype is almost entirely from CEOs, who are the furthest thing from.

rozap··on Your Most Improbable Life
I was recently talking to a friend about this, the concept of a normie. A normie is kind of a mirage, it only exists in the realm of statistics, but when you look at any one individual who could fit that label, they are unlikely, so, can they really be a normie? Once internalized, the only real way out is to be less judgemental. Sure, you won't be friends with everyone, but the buckets are just not super useful when looking at an individual.
rozap··on Goodbye Visa and Mastercard: 130M Europeans switching to sovereign payment
You're right, it does, and my edit was my emotion getting the better of me. But when you realize you're interacting with an account that only posts about the same few talking points and never contributed to tech discussion, I think it's a reasonable conclusion to come to. I was wound up enough to check his profile, which yea...don't do that, but he got me. Bot and troll accounts are good at that, whereas generally discussion on hn is alright, even if the viewpoints are disagreeable.
rozap··on Goodbye Visa and Mastercard: 130M Europeans switching to sovereign payment
America was literally founded on this premise, and it should come as no surprise that our government has (d)evolved into what the founders felt was inevitable.

America is fairly exceptional in that it's not racist to say "Americans are ____" given it's a melting pot of so many different races and cultures. That's a beautiful thing, but something that the white supremecists in control of the US are working to erode.

Edit: damn I think this account is actually a bot. It's only pro Israel talking points, islamaphobia, and appeals to the mod to get people banned.

Yep, we also don't touch them for this same reason.
rozap··on Fisker went bankrupt and owners built an open source car company from the ashes
There are plenty of FOSS engine management projects around. There is a big community of people doing incredible mods. But cars are complicated and to do it well requires a lot of time, effort, knowledge, money. I've blown up plenty of engines along the way, and it's fun and I'm learning a lot, but it's not something that's easy to just dabble in.
rozap··on The old world of tech is dying and the new cannot be born
Reminder that the article was good and there is a lot of truth in it.

Also, never trust Microsoft.

rozap··on Cloudflare to cut about 20% of its workforce
This is pretty interesting. I'd read your blog if you write a thing about it.
rozap··on Cloudflare to cut about 20% workforce
Excess labor would only translate to increased revenue and new products if these companies had a product vision to begin with. But they don't, so people get sacked.

rozap··on From Supabase to Clerk to Better Auth
this is sorta the obvious takeaway here. as a postgres/phoenix/elixir enjoyer i am blissfully unaware of all this sort of SaaS churn.
rozap··on Today I've made the difficult decision to reduce the size of Coinbase by ~14%
It's the only thing crypto folks care about, so idk, I think it's fitting.
rozap··on The Car That Watches You Back: The Advertising Infrastructure of Modern Cars
Diabolical devices. Anything between 1990-2015 is sort of the gold era of cars. A modern engine swap was the best thing I did for a number of my vehicles. And there are FOSS ECUs that are extremely capable.
rozap··on Israeli soldiers using sexual assault to force Palestinians out of West Bank
Genocide committed by a democratic country that is cool with lgbtq people that have tech jobs and hang out at cafes doesn't make it OK. You're concerned with aesthetics over everything else.
rozap··on Apple has removed most of the towns and villages in Lebanon from Apple maps?
The majority of the population in Israel supports this. And the horrifying and surprising thing to me is that a number of my American Jewish friends will just say "they feel conflicted", while their parents (in their 60s by now) overwhelmingly support Israel. Obviously this is anecdotal but I still found it shocking. The scary thing is that this unhinged behavior will only lead to more antisemitism and violence directed back at them. It's so obviously counterproductive from my perspective as someone who hasn't had Israeli indoctrination. We're in a seriously dangerous moment but of course this has been building since the 40s when the country was founded on brutal dispossession and racial superiority.
rozap··on The Intelligence Failure in Iran
Maybe? Israel has wanted us to go to war in Iran since Reagan. They finally got a president stupid enough (or with sufficient leverage over) to do it. But I wouldn't say from the US's side that this has been in the works for decades.
rozap··on General Motors is assisting with the restoration of a rare EV1
GM marketing is not concerned with secondary markets.

And yes, as someone who races shitboxes as a hobby, they're more like 3k now.

rozap··on General Motors is assisting with the restoration of a rare EV1
Still on the younger end for people who have enough money to buy a car, which now averages $~40k. Zoomers are economically screwed.
rozap··on General Motors is assisting with the restoration of a rare EV1
This is part of GM's broader marketing push to drum up goodwill from younger people. It's the same reason why they have a youtube series about the beginnings of the Cadillac F1 team, which is clearly produced for zoomer and millenial audiences.

I don't think there's anything nefarious here, they are just cultivating a particular image to try to sell cars. It's a reasonable marketing strategy, as marketing strategies go.

rozap··on A pig's brain has been frozen with its cellular activity locked in place
I read your quote "Having to provide for other people is literally the same as being trapped in a "I have no mouth and I must scream"" and my brain immediately went to the millions of Americans working dead end jobs just to put food on the table for their family. It need not be communism for this to be a reality.
rozap··on A pig's brain has been frozen with its cellular activity locked in place
I guess I'm not making a judgement of what other people should or shouldn't do. Just making up a goofy example to illustrate that the choice is not so obvious to a lot of people, which I think you also illustrate pretty well with your examples. It really depends on the individual. I do think it's worth looking at the incentives of the people funding these companies, because that does give a picture of the probable outcomes.

People will continue working on this sort of thing, that's fine, it really doesn't bother me. If I was forced to make a judgement, I think it's maybe a little silly, but I'm also not out there saving the planet from climate armageddon so I shouldn't cast stones. As a species we are extremely bad at prioritizing for our collective survival and there are a million worse things to be working on.

rozap··on A pig's brain has been frozen with its cellular activity locked in place
Brains 'R Us recently filed for chapter 11 and has been cut up and sold for scrap to private equity. The new PE firm has your brain. In 2208 there's a large grey market for brains to be used for hybrid AI and meat bag workflows. It's technically illegal in many jurisdictions due to "ethical implications", but is still the cheapest way to run many workloads. The method used to harness the brain involves reanimating it in a jar of jelly, and then forcing it to do the 2208 equivalent of a captcha. Each time the brain fails a captcha, the brain receives an electric impulse which simulates the most excruciating pain that the brain can respresent, but the brain cannot scream or run away.
rozap··on Google details new 24-hour process to sideload unverified Android apps
You're right, I pasted this into Claude and it seems to think that there are many avenues. And Claude even named the parking operator by name because they're facing a class action for this very thing:

Claude wrote:

> The broader trend is in your favor. App-only parking companies are facing a wave of legal action nationally. A major class action lawsuit against Metropolis Technologies (one of the largest app-based parking operators) alleges they violated consumer protection laws by failing to provide adequate means to pay for parking and then penalizing consumers for not paying. Lanier Law Firm Tennessee's Attorney General secured a nearly $9 million settlement against Metropolis for similar practices, requiring them to implement clear signage, maintain staffed customer support, and automatically issue refunds when their technology malfunctions.

It's just so exhausting to deal with this kind of thing, I've been super busy and it's not worth it to me to fight over $30, which is exactly the bet these scummy companies are making. I think LLMs lower the cost of drafting serious sounding letters to the point where that should be my first impulse rather than giving up and paying them, which rewards the behavior.
