roynasser··on Ask HN: Is there room for a new email hosting service?
General aliases are bad imho because it tends (in my experience) to attract spam... One way I get around that, is instead of aliasing @domain.com, I do .a@domain.com, so I use my emails when i subscribe ServiceName.a@domain.com

good balance for me...

roynasser··on Microsoft laid off a DEI team, DEI is 'no longer business critical'
If an All Hands meeting sounds borderline boring "All Employee" meetings sound worse than school on a weekend!! j/k but they definitely gone way to far at your company... i feel for you lol
roynasser··on Show HN: Route your prompts to the best LLM
A common model in some cost cutting software is to charge x% of the total savings... Win/win...just a suggestion... use picks "main LLM" and you calculate the "non optimized cost" based on that. Whatever savings you drive you take a share of the savings.
roynasser··on How Safe Is SF?
I've seen lots of things flagged because they arent flattering to the majority of the HN populus...
roynasser··on Tesla's self-driving tech ditched by 98 percent of customers that tried it
Over optimistic claims aren't at all exclusive to Tesla though... If anything we should take all claims with 10 grains of salt...

Am I back from the future, or why is this here?
roynasser··on Veo
VPN'd right into that playground, turns out the toys were pretty blah
roynasser··on Show HN: A self-published art book about Google's first 25 years
Nice! Ordered mine ;)
roynasser··on OWASP Data Breach Notification
As others have said, the information wasn't something they'd need (arguably) to vet people, and even if it was, what is the argument to keeping all those people's personal data for more than a decade... They breached the confidentiality expected, and I'm not sure this can be just considered an "understandable mistake"... sorry, they need to be help to the same standards anyone possessing or processing data does.
roynasser··on Are We Living in the Roaring 20s?
isn't this pretty common to most analyses of past events and attempts to make proxy analyses for the future? If we had all of the facts organized and known we would be able to prevent all crashes, etc, would we not?

And apparently many people here on HN want to discredit the author's conclusions because they dont agree with them personally.

roynasser··on Are We Living in the Roaring 20s?
Your experiences are anecdotal but may not be the average... the relative number of people in homelessness has reduced from the 90's to today, that is certainly good.. (It has had a slight peak recently post pandemic).

Purchasing power has climbed, hunger has reduced, I think all of these are important metrics to consider...

I think people are much more polarized and that social media has brought out terrible polarity, but it doesnt necessarily mean the average person is not living better than 30 yrs ago.

roynasser··on Israel deploys expansive facial recognition program in Gaza
"Confirmed True" based on 2 tweets (one of them from the iranians) and a few articles that all cite the same sources... lol, textbook fake... Israel could have leveled Gaza in an afternoon... most countries would have done that... I kind of wish they did and this would be over.
roynasser··on Israel deploys expansive facial recognition program in Gaza
sure, it didnt start, but israel was "happy" defending itself from its neighbor shooting thousands of rockets each year... Yeah, it didnt start on oct 7th, but the escalation very much did. Actions have consequences, and a ceasefire was broken on Oct 7th... Let them resolve their issues now
roynasser··on Israel deploys expansive facial recognition program in Gaza
You seem to be the only person with proof they used any incendiary bombs in non-permitted situations. Please post the source to these wild claims.
roynasser··on Israel deploys expansive facial recognition program in Gaza
Hamas has been attempting to bomb Israel for 15 years... Israel built the Iron Dome for self defense, you seem to "forget" this. Any other neighboring country would have flattened Gaza from the air already...
roynasser··on PostgreSQL is eating the database world
I feel like I've seen this more than I've seen my parents since year!
roynasser··on Blackwater PMC founder Erik Prince on distributed open-source communication
The architectures currently seen on cellphones and most (if not all) modern electronic devices make it so hardware buttons are just as vulnerable as software "buttons"... (the hardware buttons actually trigger software which maps it to functions, so if the software is attacked the hardware button could be vulnerable - just as a software button...)

The case for replaceable batteries can be made from a convenience/durability/sustainability point of view, sure, but how do replaceable batteries improve trust?

roynasser··on How Did REST Come to Mean the Opposite of REST? (2022)
Scrum is pretty high on the list too
roynasser··on Can confirm a current Broadcom VMware customer went from $8M renewal to $100M
I'm curious to know how many Startups were going with VMware... honest curiosity... VMware isnt really "startupy"
roynasser··on Show HN: Gitlab Meeting Simulator 2024
Its a great way to stiffle innovation, though... Lots of ideas start out as dumb, and then get refined... We have also been using AI, meeting recordings, and summarization to some extent, but I dont see it being used "for all meetings", it will just be very counter productive IMO.
roynasser··on Yandex to divest its Russia-based businesses
"initiated" is a stretch... If your neighbor is coming to kill you and you shoot first you are - again - defending yourself... thats one of the dumbest arguments i've ever heard!
roynasser··on True Name – Mastercard (2022)
not how free speech works... "someone could act on that idea" isnt a good enough reason to sanction speech imo
roynasser··on iPhone 15 USB-C port is 100% standard; MFi certification rumors wrong
universal != legislated
roynasser··on Launch HN: Fuse (YC W19) – Unified API for financial data aggregators
I couldnt find a list of supported institutions, my interest is mostly in the south american and european ones as most aggregators fall short. thanks!
roynasser··on Google adds Black-owned business label to product results
The Nazis did something very similar to storefronts owned by Jews, Black people, Homosexuals, etc... That didnt go well... (I do understand that the motivation was much different, but after a while the initial motivation is often lost)...
roynasser··on Launch HN: Sidekick (YC S20) – A hardware device to connect remote teams
Does this still exist? The page mentions being launched in 2011 and last update 2018...largely dead I think
roynasser··on Confidential VMs
Its very realistic! Its being done at this moment! (amazing, isnt it?)

lfmao... but jokes aside, the "cloud" is just series of datacenters with less choice of a brand, you do realize this? There is no such "cloud" as you say... Internet allows exactly for decentralized data (among cloud-1a-b1-c2 to cloud-2b-5x-3h is not all "in the cloud", its the same as datacenterA to datacenterB.... proximity still has an effect, as do all other network conditions...)

Dont let the marketing sandcastle trap you in!

roynasser··on Confidential VMs
Current generation is so "cloud-happy" they dont appreciate the cost of being cloud-based... (10x? 100x? more?)

Large companies have been announcing HUGE savings, small companies would be able to save a LOT too... such a pity, all the cloud abstraction creates lazy teams IMO, and lazy companies... (again IMO, I know this wont be a popular view, because this audience is exactly the cloud-happy audiencem but if you achieve self criticism, self-hosting / colo etc is probably a better fit for 99% of cases)

roynasser··on Ask HN: How do we stop the polarization/toxicicity filling the web?
This!!!

There was even a "emoji" of beating a troll back in the days o ubb and vbb
