roter··on Daft: Distributed DataFrame for Python
> To help improve Daft, we collect non-identifiable data.

> To disable this behavior, set the following environment variable: DAFT_ANALYTICS_ENABLED=0

> [0] In short, we collect the following:

> On import, we track system information such as the runner being used, version of Daft, OS, Python version, etc.

> On calls of public methods on the DataFrame object, we track metadata about the execution: the name of the method, the walltime for execution and the class of error raised (if any). Function parameters and stacktraces are not logged, ensuring that user data remains private.

Is this telemetry really necessary?

roter··on Project managers, ducks, and dogs marking territory (2013)
When I was finishing my PhD thesis, the suggestion was to insert some low-hanging fruit for the reviewers who would be doing only a cursory review but would need to find their "duck". Didn't do it because my committee was excellent and didn't want to show any disrespect.
roter··on Cubic spline interpolation
Stineman interpolation [0] is an alternative that is quick and "dirty" imputer for missing values. Of course there are monotonic-preserving versions [1] of splines that are excellent as well.

For my uses, cubic interpolation is simply not of value when I have noisy points and/or unpredictable behaviour between points --- Kalman smoothers or Gaussian process/Kriging gives me both a good mean estimate between points and a sense of the error associated with the interpolation.

roter··on Ask HN: 6 months later. How is Bard doing?
I think they're waiting on the fall-out of the Online News Act legislation (C-18) and perhaps the Artificial Intelligence and Data Act (C-27).
roter··on Ask HN: 6 months later. How is Bard doing?
Was curious so checked Canada but it isn't available [0]. I think it is due to the Online News Act legislation (C-18) and perhaps the Artificial Intelligence and Data Act (C-27).

roter··on Northern summer was hottest on record by a significant margin
An interesting impact of an immediate stop of fossil fuel emissions is a rapid temperature increase over a few years due to an unmasking impact. i.e. the aerosols that are continually being produced due to fossil fuel burning drop out within days, weeks, months, increasing the solar radiation reaching the surface [0,1].

roter··on Ask HN: How to convince someone man-made climate change is real?
People do not like to be fooled. As others have said, first listen. Then respond by planting seeds about where they are getting their science and facts. The seed that gets people out of cults is when they realize they've been duped. Unfortunately emotional wins over rational every time.

roter··on Emissions are no longer following the worst case scenario
> ... so emissions are the first derivative of this graph

Not exactly. There is a net sink of emissions every year into the land & ocean, so d(CO2)/dt = emissions minus the net sinks, roughly. See the graph on CO2 partitioning [0]. A lot of research goes into whether these sinks continue at their current rate of removal.

Coriolis. There are timescales set up by two big mechanisms: one is westward-propagating oceanic Rossby [0] waves just to the north and south of the equator and the other is eastward-propagating Kelvin [1] waves along the equator which hit the Peruvian coast, split in two and flow north and south bouncing along the coast. Sloshing back and forth.

roter··on Launch HN: OutSail (YC W23) – Wingsails to reduce cargo ship fuel consumption
I know zero about how containers are tied down but the gust forces on the sails that I saw in the video are going to be enormous. Have there been some simple checks on the righting moments on the container and how it transmitted to the containers below and finally to the deck? One benefit of the design is that you can "reef" in bad conditions (hopefully really, really quickly) and perhaps still get some benefit.

Have you done any weather routing calcs to see what the angle of attack for the big ship lanes? Perhaps an integrated trip cost-benefit?

Also, you might not want to use the WASP acronym and stick with just "wind-assisted propulsion". The wind industry will immediately think of the WAsP software [0].
