rosybox··on Severe Outcomes Among U.S. Patients with Covid-19, Feb 12–Mar 16, 2020
Could this be skewed at the moment due to the number of nursing homes in Washington State that were hit early on?
rosybox··on The state of the restaurant industry
Yes it's all crazed conspiracy and you happen to be one of the few people to see through it all. Your medical pedigree must be amazing. Your scientific prowess beyond imagination. You're not helping.
rosybox··on The state of the restaurant industry
I never said "years", 2021 is in less than a year. I think you're contrarian, misinformed and in deep denial. Anyway, facts are what they are and we'll see in due time.
rosybox··on The state of the restaurant industry
What research papers have you seen with more optimistic projections? You're calling the projections that two governments are relying on as ill informed based on what credentials?
rosybox··on The state of the restaurant industry
I imagine the WSJ Editorial Board is focusing on a solution to keep businesses surviving, not employment. They may have other ideas to help with that later. Without businesses, there will be no employment.
rosybox··on The state of the restaurant industry
Doomsday panic? Ill informed opinion? I'm literally looking at the chart used by the White House that comes from the data generated by the UK government. Look for yourself:

rosybox··on The state of the restaurant industry
The WSJ Editorial Board has suggested that the Fed create a new facility that gives very cheap loans to businesses that need them. These loans will not need to be repaid right away and should sustain any business that needs it during this period. It sounded workable.

rosybox··on The state of the restaurant industry
It's going to be wiped out far beyond June. Based on the recent models run by UK, the same models that prompted the White House to warn against gatherings of greater than 10 people, the curve doesn't end even without intervention until August. With intervention what we are going through right now could last well into 2021.
rosybox··on The state of the restaurant industry
I feel for the industry, but I'm having a hard time seeing myself buying gift cards at a moment when I'm wondering if I will have a job or food for my family.
rosybox··on How to get your money back on a non-refundable hotel
If that is so then you should make your point without having to create a false story.
rosybox··on How to get your money back on a non-refundable hotel
Just FYI, if you're lying to get out of paying for something, or to get reimbursed on false pretenses that is called fraud and is illegal. It's also wrong to do, it is an action taken in bad faith.
rosybox··on Amazon to hire 100k warehouse and delivery workers
You likely couldn't panic buy anyways, stores are limiting what you can buy. Online and offline.
rosybox··on Open letter from Italy to the international scientific community
It's unlikely that other countries can do what China has done. As an example, China is able to do 200 CT scans a day at each fever station throughout the affected regions. In the US we can maybe do what 10 CT scans a day with a single machine? In China they were able to figure out within a short duration if someone needed to be quarantined. They built hospitals in days. It's not just about locking down. China has people taking temperatures of people entering their apartments or when they show up at work. There are drones patrolling the streets that detect people with a high temperature. I have a hard time seeing us in the US build out what China did in just a few days.
rosybox··on Trump Declares National Emergency
Everyone who is going to has already made their mind about Trump. Nothing that happens in the next few months is going to change that after the last 3 years. If he botches the coronavirus response his detractors will yell about it and his defenders will blame someone else.
rosybox··on Trump Declares National Emergency
Cannot stay 2 meters away at the check stand. How would that work?
rosybox··on The sound of the Hagia Sophia, more than 500 years ago
I'm not sure HN is the venue for you to begin your race war or make whatever point you're trying to go for here.
rosybox··on The sound of the Hagia Sophia, more than 500 years ago
Just listening to the balloon pop in the Hagia Sophia was amazing to hear. Are there any other structures with similar acoustics that still holds performances?

Also there's a YouTube playlist of the recording they mention at the end, the Lost Voices of Hagia Sophia:

rosybox··on Adobe Summit Cancelled
Longer than April, it's been spreading in China since December and it's still spreading now, 3 months later, it's just beginning to spread elsewhere. It's probably going to be a while. The goal of the various health organizations is to slow the spread so that hospitals and medical services aren't overwhelmed by everyone getting sick all at once.
rosybox··on Google's ambitious push into gaming is floundering
I'm saying that Google does sometimes stick with products that aren't doing well initially if they see the promise in it.
rosybox··on Google's ambitious push into gaming is floundering
iirc Google Maps was initially not a success. MapQuest had a majority market share of online maps up until the release of the iPhone. So they floundered for about a year or two.

rosybox··on Second U.S. coronavirus case of unknown origin confirmed in Santa Clara County
It's good the company where I work, which employs about 70 people, allows us all to remote. We have a large space that we rent in a WeWork office in San Francisco but we can also work from home if we want. We have remote employees in other states and over the last year have built a very strong remote culture. All of our meetings have people who are remote, in fact often more people are remote than not these days. I imagine our company's work from home policy will help avoid downtime and really make a difference compared to companies that are just going to have to shut down when faced with the reality of this horrible virus.
rosybox··on Will VBA Die? (2019)
If there isn't now, I imagine it will come. There's:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-edge/windows-runt...

I'm sure Microsoft is probably at least considering making JavaScript work well with existing Windows APIs.

rosybox··on Will VBA Die? (2019)
Sure, but it's not as big as an ecosystem. Knowing JavaScript at this point is way more valuable than learning VBA. I'm not saying VBA is bad, I think visual basic is great, I have fond memories of it, but reality is JavaScript is going to be what companies are going to want their employees to know.
rosybox··on Will VBA Die? (2019)
JavaScript has a huge upside because a lot of people already know JavaScript. The more tools and platforms switch to JavaScript the more of an office superhero users are when they know something about the language. The productivity of employees will jump off the charts. When you send someone to train for one thing that utilizes JavaScript you get the benefit that those skills may also happen to work with something else as well.
rosybox··on Pay up or we’ll make Google ban your ads
Google's invalid click contact form that Krebs links to says:

> Please keep in mind that it's your responsibility to prevent invalid activity from occurring in your account, and this form does not absolve you of that responsibility.

How is some random lay person running a wordpress site going to know how to prevent invalid activity when anyone could do this to them? I hate that corporate speak too about they can't comment and how they have tools, without addressing the concern people have. I resent how much power Google and Facebook have over small businesses that have an online presence. I hope the Justice Department takes a real good look at all this bullshit and breaks these giant, powerful companies up so that we end up with small companies, that care about their customers.

rosybox··on Astronomers want public funds for intelligent life search
I don't know why taxpayers should have to pay for the search for E.T.. That's a hard sell. Probably not what the founders had in mind when they gave the government the power to take money out of the pockets of the country's citizenry. I'm all for the social contract, investing in infrastructure, and making sure everyone has affordable housing and medicine, but this is a tough fucking sell. Get some rich scifi enthusiast to fund a grant. Some people just see the country's coffers as a free for all for any crazy idea. That money belongs to the public it came from and should be used to the benefit of its people with utmost seriousness it deserves. What the government can spend its money on is a zero-sum gane and any dollars we can invest into kids getting better meals or finding a biomarker for detecting ALS would be better spent than figuring out if UFOs are real.
rosybox··on The AI delusion: why humans trump machines
How would Koch see a mechanism where neurons or other cells in a human brain are sequentially replaced over time with synthetic components that simulate their function, is the consciousness lost along the way? Is there consciousness as long as there is at least one biological cell left?

rosybox··on Coronavirus Forces World’s Largest Work-from-Home Experiment
I'm also a SWE who mostly works remote. I get tired of being in my house. Sometimes it feels like I'm trapped. I don't have a car so I don't really get out much or go far or travel much.
rosybox··on Google Maps Hacks
That 10px font size is not accessible. I can't read what's there without zooming in. It looked like decorative text or legal disclosures for a contest or something. Did the site's creator find that the ideal text size to use?
