rosndo··on Jump Trading sues 79-year-old Carl Sagan fan over wormhole.com domain
Why would an email with a number not be a contract?
rosndo··on Jump Trading sues 79-year-old Carl Sagan fan over wormhole.com domain
>or any reasonable person

There are many reasonable people who understand that $50k is nothing for a decent domain name.

rosndo··on Paris suspends electric bus fleet after two fires
Live in central London and usually walk everywhere, never experienced or even heard of black snot. Pretty sure it’s only a thing for the tube-travelling demographic.
rosndo··on Crypto is winning, and Bitcoin diehards are furious about it
2017 called, they want their pointless debate back.

This battle was lost half a decade ago, today it’s just an incredibly silly hill to die on.

rosndo··on You can now ask Google to remove your phone number, email or address from search
Who needs such a “loophole”? It’s already very common to take down pages with fake DMCAs, fake legal process and fake court orders.

Anyone wanting to deploy dirty tricks to remove things from Google can do so very easily already

rosndo··on You can now ask Google to remove your phone number, email or address from search
Krebs’s doxing posts will get removed from Google?
rosndo··on 75 Percent of car buyers don’t want features locked behind subscriptions
That’s not how car warranty works. In the US Magnuson-Moss protects you from this.

You can literally engine swap your car and still make hassle-free warranty claims on your suspension.

rosndo··on 75 Percent of car buyers don’t want features locked behind subscriptions
> If it becomes ubiquitous I'd expect an underground market to form around activating features which are physically present but locked out by software.

There already is, just read any car forums.

rosndo··on Ask HN: Does anyone use a Raspberry Pi as your main computer?
This is a weird take.

For example: From a security POV it’s not meaningfully different from being given a download link for a binary.

rosndo··on “PSA: iOS isn't secure – thief managed to bypass FaceID and access keychain”
> Don’t you just file a report online?

Often hard to do in a foreign country.

But yeah, not sure who bothers to report a stolen phone. I think it’s rather unusual for phone insurances to require a police report.

rosndo··on The frenzied world of rare watches
You can find waay more attractive premiums through traditional insurance brokers than via Hodinkee, but depending on the size of your collection it might not be worth the hassle as finding a decent traditional option is a headache unless you know someone who’s already gone through the trouble.
rosndo··on The frenzied world of rare watches
Yeah, exactly.
rosndo··on Uber concedes deception, prepares for $26M ACCC spanking
But this is a solved problem in Scandinavia, you just have someone else do the speeding for you and pay them a low salary.

The fines will be scaled based on the income of the chauffeur, not the highly paid executive in the back. Even if it’s actually the executive who’s paying them.

rosndo··on The frenzied world of rare watches
Damage isn’t a huge problem, watches tend to be pretty sturdy and mere scratches aren’t going to hurt resale value in most cases (unless you have them repaired!)

Theft on the other hand is a pretty big concern, I just had a 100k patek ripped off my wrist. I’m very lucky though, the local store manager was sympathetic and managed to help me skip the queue for a (slightly more desirable) replacement, effectively nullifying any financial damage.

Lesson learned, not walking around with uninsured watches no matter how nice the area is. Insurance premiums aren’t too bad though.

rosndo··on Beginners Guide to 0day/CVE AppSec Research
CVEs are not found, they are applied for. The resume padding sport has resulted in a flood of nonsensical applications.
rosndo··on Ask HN: Who here is juggling two or more remote jobs? How is it working out?
Most people do not need to be available to respond to incidents.
rosndo··on Ask HN: Who here is juggling two or more remote jobs? How is it working out?
You don’t need to be productive for 8 hours a day in order to collect a paycheck. Often not for even a single hour.
rosndo··on Ask HN: Who here is juggling two or more remote jobs? How is it working out?
> you're not going to be able to give your all.

Why would you want to? You’re only working for money.

rosndo··on Ask HN: Who here is juggling two or more remote jobs? How is it working out?
Who cares about this “basic trust”? Except the employer, obviously. Not exactly a balanced power dynamic there.
rosndo··on Beginners Guide to 0day/CVE AppSec Research
It’s so weird to see “CVE” used like this. “AppSec research” or just résumé padding?
rosndo··on Twitter set to accept Musk's $43B offer – sources
Twitter is what you make it. If you choose to surround yourself in the toxic cesspool parts, perhaps that says more about you than Twitter?

99% of the stuff I see is interesting technical content

rosndo··on Ask HN: Migadu? Postale? Mxroute? Or any other mail services using this model?
I bet that most of these terms also forbid sending malware or spam. How is that meaningfully different when it comes to scanning email content?
rosndo··on Extracting WhatsApp Messages from an iOS Backup
Only if you want to use iCloud, no? Or maybe I just wasn’t able to use that at the time because I was on hotel WiFi.

Are new iPhones really doing usb 2 over usb-c?

rosndo··on Extracting WhatsApp Messages from an iOS Backup
Hardly seems like an unusual situation. I suspect most people never import photos from their iPhone, they might have quite a few if/when they eventually choose to do so.
rosndo··on Extracting WhatsApp Messages from an iOS Backup
Literally something I regularly need to take screenshots of for payment confirmations etc.
rosndo··on Extracting WhatsApp Messages from an iOS Backup
Have they improved that? Last I tried with 200GB or so of photos it just froze.
rosndo··on Machine-learning models vulnerable to undetectable backdoors: new claim
For some rather unexciting definitions of “backdoor” anyway.

If an email service notices big amounts of spam evading their ML classifier, they’ll have to change their systems just like they would have done pre-ML.

If a bank notices a big amount of bad loan applications being approved by their ML-classifier, they’ll have to change their systems just like they would have done pre-ML.

Nobody is going to be popping shells with this. The “worst case” scenarios are already happening on a regular basis with traditional systems without any backdoors at all.

rosndo··on Crypto giant Binance built ties to a Russian FSB-linked agency

rosndo··on SpaceX avoided a Russian jamming attack in Ukraine
I’m just pointing out the unsurprising coincidence that he is a German speaker repeating falsehoods German leadership is peddling to Germans exclusively in the German language.

Nowhere else in the world will you see anyone pushing the lie that Ukraine isn’t being supplied with heavy weapons.

I really don’t know how you can spin this into an attack. sschueller is simply a victim of propaganda, that’s not an unreasonable thing to point out. I just added useful context to the outrageous lie he is spreading.

Let me remind you of the principle of charity (https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=true&que...)

Reading my comment as a personal attack is miles away from the most charitable interpretation.
