ropiwqefjnpoa··on Show HN: I'm building a robot that performs haircuts [video]
I am immediately reminded of this cautionary tale: https://pbfcomics.com/comics/automatic-business/
ropiwqefjnpoa··on Shopping Sucks Now
Gloves Reviews Discord Server, I actually lol'd
ropiwqefjnpoa··on Shopping Sucks Now
Definitely. Shops have limited inventory so they will tend to sell a well rounded, well made product (depends on store of course). And if it is junk, you can usually tell in person.
ropiwqefjnpoa··on Shopping Sucks Now
Maybe, but sometimes the more you research the harder it gets to decide.
ropiwqefjnpoa··on Shopping Sucks Now
yeah, I get bombarded with ads on Instagram for a decent looking product at a "must be a quality item" price. But a quick AliExpress search reveals there probably just getting it there and reselling for huge markups. Pretty smart actually.
ropiwqefjnpoa··on Shopping Sucks Now
Something that has been lost is genuine reviews. First you have all the sponsored reviews and then all the equally worthless "I don't know how to use it so it's junk" or "it never arrived" 1 star reviews. And so many "review" sites look like they've been procedurally generated then SEO optimized and filled with ads.
ropiwqefjnpoa··on Can Crops’ Wild Relatives Save Troubled Agriculture?
Gluten sensitivity comes to mind: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3573730/

The study finds that gluten consumption hasn't increased over the past few decades and that a culprit is more likely "wheat genetics"

Anecdotally, I don't know if you know many genuinely GF people, but the ones I know have all said that they can eat bread while in European countries, but have bad reactions back home.

ropiwqefjnpoa··on Can Crops’ Wild Relatives Save Troubled Agriculture?
Great, more crossing-breeding with untested species we aren't used to ingesting. I wonder what weird and wonderful food allergies we'll be able to enjoy now?
ropiwqefjnpoa··on Thieves Are Using Bluetooth to Target Vehicle Break-Ins
That's simple and clever, knowing for sure what cars are worth breaking into. I imagine based on the BD_ADDR you can even surmise what type of device it is.
ropiwqefjnpoa··on Why do publishers still issue hardbacks? (2018)
Simple answers are, because people still buy them and they can charge more.
ropiwqefjnpoa··on No to Chrome
I really like the idea of PeerTube, I wish it would gain a larger audience. Profitability might be it's biggest hurdle though.
ropiwqefjnpoa··on No to Chrome
I wouldn't consider that a "habit" for most people.
ropiwqefjnpoa··on No to Chrome
Even if you have no issue with Google, this is still a good idea to encourage competition. Honestly, Chrome is not as good as it used to be anyway. For me, Google Maps and Waze are the hardest things to kick. And YouTube...
ropiwqefjnpoa··on Even 50-year-old climate models correctly predicted global warming
And yet other 50-year-old climate models in-correctly predicted global cooling.
ropiwqefjnpoa··on Can You Copyright Work Made by Artificial Intelligence?
Right, "AI" is still developed by someone, it hasn't just poofed into existence fully formed. Now if two AI's from separate individuals collaborated to create a new AI...
ropiwqefjnpoa··on Show HN: A small bootstrapped independent VPN company in the Netherlands
I think it's a good place to start, especially to avoid scaling issues.
ropiwqefjnpoa··on Show HN: A small bootstrapped independent VPN company in the Netherlands
Bummer, iOS and MacOS only.
ropiwqefjnpoa··on What Kids Are Learning About Thanksgiving Is Changing
Living in New England, you'll see many roads, even schools named after tribes and chiefs like Pequot and Metacom. I always wonder at the reasoning behind that, a rosy view of the past, remembrance of what was lost, just plain ignorance of what happened? The Great Indian War and what led up to it left a mark there that lingers to this day in one form or another.

I'll tell you though, the Puritans became the very thing, if not worse, they were escaping in England...

ropiwqefjnpoa··on Tim Berners-Lee unveils plan to save the web
I see it's backed by Microsoft, Google and Facebook, which means it's either impotent or horrible.
ropiwqefjnpoa··on Edge vs. Chrome: Microsoft's Tracking Prevention Hits Google the Hardest
And they're doing it with Chromium, this is all a little poetic.
ropiwqefjnpoa··on Tell HN: Google should drop Quora from search results
This coming from HN that posts 1000 NY Times articles a day.
ropiwqefjnpoa··on Startup says it's making odorless weed
Yeah it's called edibles.
ropiwqefjnpoa··on YouTube channel owners: Is your content directed to children?
It's getting hard to tell where Google ends and the government begins.
ropiwqefjnpoa··on YouTube channel owners: Is your content directed to children?
I subscribe to a video game channel that primarily covers only racing games and hardly swears. Is that considered directed to children? This is such a mess.
ropiwqefjnpoa··on The Web Began Dying in 2014 (2017)
FTA: "GOOG and FB ceased competing directly, focusing on what they do best instead."

“People of the same trade seldom meet together, even for merriment and diversion, but the conversation ends in a conspiracy against the public, or in some contrivance to raise prices” - Adam Smith

Some things never change.

ropiwqefjnpoa··on Cook: ‘China Hasn’t Pressured Us’
There's no need to pressure them, they're happy to comply if it makes them money.
ropiwqefjnpoa··on The Editable PDF Initiative
CTRL-S might download 10's of files and folders just to save one webpage. And then the html page when opened, starts running scripts and calling home, it's a mess really.
ropiwqefjnpoa··on The Editable PDF Initiative
Yeah, now that nearly everything prints or saves to pdf format, I have little use for a direct editor. Just make sure my PDF's always open and always look the same.

What I would like, is to make PDF's easy to markup with highlighting, circles, comments etc. Currently, even in Acrobat, it's not very intuitive.

ropiwqefjnpoa··on A 70-year-old's secret to a full and happy life
FTA: "Making "have fun" the goal is the key that unlocks everything"

This is enticing blanket statement. However, there are many things you'll need to do that will not or should not be fun. And if you fully believe this sentiment, during those times you are not having fun, you may feel like you're "doing it wrong" when this is just how it is and that's ok.

Happiness is more related to contentment than fun.

ropiwqefjnpoa··on The Editable PDF Initiative
I'm not going to say the PDF format is perfect, but I do like sending out documents knowing that in general they are going to be opened by a reader in a presentation format. I'd rather they not be opened by an editor, where my viewers are immediately invited to start making changes like a word doc. I suppose having them open initially in a non-editable mode would work, Acrobat functions that way.
