ropiku··on Apple's cash hoard swells to $246B
But those $300b weren't sitting there idle, they were already in the economy in the first place. They don't have to be in the US to be loaned/invested in US companies.
ropiku··on Leaked email from United Airlines CEO blames passenger for violent removal
United should've planned ahead for their staff to get to where they need without forcing somebody off the plane. They already knew how many tickets were sold, how many checked in and how many boarded (they were already on the plane).
ropiku··on The Mac Pro Lives
The reason Apple gave is the truth, LPDDR3 only supports 32GB. You would need DDR4 for 64GB but Intel only supports regular DDR4 not LPDDR4. While DDR4 uses less power when active, LP saves significant amounts of power during standby and they would need bigger batteries to compensate.
ropiku··on Square UK Launches
> variable cost which is quite opaque

I'm not a user but I see that iZettle has an up-front calculator to tell you what your % fee will be. It reaches 1.75% at £6200 which I believe means it's cheaper for most shops.

ropiku··on Square UK Launches
I see a lot of coffee shops and market stalls with iZettle too.

Interestingly Square seems more expensive than iZettle. Square is flat 1.75% in-person 2.5% online while iZettle is sliding 2.75%-1%. The threshold seems to be £6200/month at which point iZettle is going below 1.75%. That's pretty low so I suspect most shops would still chose them.

ropiku··on Twitter explores subscription-based option
But that would be average across all users. If you remove valuable users the remaining ones will be worth much less to advertisers. There probably is some equilibrium at which point it's financially worth it but it could also piss up advertisers.

Disclaimer: ex-Twitter employee, views own, etc.

ropiku··on iPad 9.7‑inch
Looks like they tried as much as possible to make a low-cost full sized iPad. Would've been a good opportunity for Apple to have P3 wide color displays on all their lines.

Even more surprised it doesn't have laminated display, possible reason why it's thinker and heavier than the 9.7" Pro.

ropiku··on A million-dollar engineering problem
I don't get it right now but it's possible that is Intercom (chat) with data from Clearbit (https://clearbit.com/reveal).
ropiku··on Migrants Choose Arrest in Canada Over Staying in the U.S
> officials with the CBSA say that if they determine that she isn't a danger of a flight risk, the agency will release her and her baby. It's then up to a tribunal to evaluate her candidacy for refugee status.

I don't specifically know about Canada but in general the refugee application takes some time. They have to be assessed if they are genuine refugees (like leaving war or political/personal persecution) and either be given status (admitted) or deported.

ropiku··on Apple Worldwide Dev Conference 2017 announced
Sadly looks like not. Both John Gruber and iMore spoke to Apple and it's not a bigger venue:

> I asked whether the move to San Jose changed the number of people who’d be able to attend. Schiller said it did not — attendance will be about the same.

ropiku··on YubiKey 4C
They sell a Yubikey 4 with USB-C adaptor which looks like what you want: https://www.yubico.com/product/yubikey-4-nano-usbc-bundle/ Looks around the same size as Yubikey 4C.
ropiku··on Not Everyone in Tech Cheers the H-1B Visa Program
I get your point but I was talking about public companies since they were mostly mentioned in the article for which shares are convertible to cash right away.
ropiku··on Romania is developing its own culture of protests
I wouldn't put it like that. He encouraged anti-corruption protests, it's just that PSD decided to support corruption. Nobody is protesting the election results.

The people continue to protest the current government because they showed themselves to be untrustworthy. They backed down right now under pressure but who says they won't give another executive order in the middle of the night when no one is looking ?

ropiku··on How banks are getting around open banking and PSD2
I don't think account numbers will get portable due to the issue you raised. However UK has kept pushing bank portability with "current account switch guarantee" which seamlessly transfers all your incoming/outgoing direct debits and the balance then closes your old account.
ropiku··on Not Everyone in Tech Cheers the H-1B Visa Program
Correct, it's a new H1B petition. For 6 years after getting your H1B you are cap exempt. However the "transfer" gives you only the reminder of 6y.
ropiku··on Not Everyone in Tech Cheers the H-1B Visa Program
Also those are cash salaries, tech companies also give generous share-based compensation. While share count is guaranteed (offer/contract) their $ value is not so they cannot be counted.
ropiku··on Apple Said to Work on Mac Chip That Would Lessen Intel Role
They sort of do this already with iOS apps during development. iOS Simulator is a simulator, not an emulator so the developing app is compiled and run in native x86.
ropiku··on PCMCIA History: From Laptops to CableCards
Exactly. And for even faster expansion, DMA, etc. there's Thunderbolt. You can easily (relatively) hook up external graphics card now.
ropiku··on Basic Economy Fares Don't Lower Ticket Prices, They Increase Ticket Prices
Also taxes are paid when you redeem miles for an award flight. BA is happy that you have to also pay ~1/2 of the ticket price in cash besides the miles.
ropiku··on Building a Production Server Swift App
It's definitely not a good idea to have a single or few storyboards but you can even link storyboards. In my personal opinion splitting into a storyboard per main feature/area is a good balance.
ropiku··on Uber’s self-driving cars start picking up passengers in San Francisco
Yes, they said that in the email they sent about self driving service:

> I heard there is a camera in the car. That’s correct. To learn more about how we can improve the self-driving experience for our riders, your trip may be recorded.

When picking up a ride they notify it's a self-driving Uber and let you cancel for free.

ropiku··on AWS X-Ray – Distributed Tracing System
Looks like it doesn't support all languages. Not sure if users can contribute plugins.

> You can use X-Ray with applications written in Java, Node.js, and .NET that are deployed on these services. Support for AWS Lambda is coming soon.

ropiku··on Amazon LightSail: Simple Virtual Private Servers on AWS
Linode still gives you more RAM for the same $. But it does feel like a serious threat to them, Amazon can use their size to outcompete them.
ropiku··on New MacBook Pro outsold every competing laptop in just five days
I doubt it. New CPUs are not going to support LPDDR4 and I highly doubt Apple is willing to make a thinker&heavier machine to cater to a small subset of users. Look at the battery life of XPS 15.
ropiku··on New MacBook Pro outsold every competing laptop in just five days
Intel only supports LPDDR3 and DDR4, not the lower power variants of DDR4. Switching from low power uses a lot more battery (idle usage is especially low in LP).
ropiku··on Dyson opens Britain’s first degree where students get paid
Simply because you have a CS degree doesn't mean you're qualified enough to be hired. Companies don't just hire based on a degree, they want demonstrable skills.

I've seen 3rd year students unable to fix a basic java compilation error in their own program. No reasonable CS graduate I know is unemployed.

ropiku··on Male birth control study cut short as some participants experience side effects
Vox has more info on this: http://www.vox.com/2016/11/2/13494126/male-birth-control-stu...

The study was terminated after serious safety concerns. Over half of participants reported adverse effects.

ropiku··on Everything about the state of the Mac
It would be hard to consider that really "portable" at 7.8 lbs, it's almost 2x as heavy as the MBP. You do get a lot of power for that though.
ropiku··on New MacBook Pro Is Not a Laptop for Developers Anymore
Correct but by this line of thinking we're never ever going to evolve beyond USB-A.
ropiku··on Apple Increases Prices of Macs in U.K. By 20 Percent
Totally right. The iPhone is even cheaper accounting for VAT. US (no tax) is 649$, UK (20% VAT) is £599=728$ compared to 649*1.2=778.8.
