The “Golden Age” was one for a (predominantly Christian) upper class that was out of touch (and still is) with the rest of the country.

Mac apps == organic. iOS apps == mostly organic, I'm testing some ads for VidCap.
macOS sales stable while iOS is growing fast.
Self doubt creeps in when you work on something, perfecting it, but never shipping. The voice of doubt grows louder and louder because now there's more at stake.
For myself, the products that worked were the ones I shipped within < 1 month, and got a lot of user feedback and kept making the products better and better throughout the years.
That's how I started. Plus, looking at my own problems gives me extra motivation to fix them.

The reach of the internet is so great that even simple ideas are still raking in thousands of dollars per month.
I remember sitting at a dinner table with new acquaintances, and my -now ex- girlfriend saying it’s baffling how seemingly simple apps [1] even make any money. They were making twice her monthly salary at the time :D
- Apple engineers are literally drowning in Radars.
- Your F.A. Radar will arrive so late to an engineer (after being filtered by QA) that the engineer is working on new features and marks F.A. bugs as low priority.
- The iOS Simulator is a second class citizen.
In the meantime, no one will bother explore other options, because it just works, even if it's a resource hog.
Long term, this thing seems to be growing non-stop.
