ronaldl93··on Show HN: I built an internet speed analytics tool
Hi

So it's basically a small docker container that you install on your computer and it would do a test every hour.

The dashboard is web based so you can check your results from anywhere.

ronaldl93··on Show HN: ISP Logger – Automated Internet Performance Monitoring
Hi HN!

If you're family, friend or follower (like on Twitter), you most certainly know by now they struggles I've had with my internet connection in most of 2020. If not, I recommend reading these posts to familiarise yourself the the bigger picture of why I built ISP Logger:

https://mybroadband.co.za/forum/threads/slow-rain-fixed-lte-... https://www.ronaldlangeveld.com/rain-speedtest https://www.ronaldlangeveld.com/how-i-got-fibre

Problem:

My internet connection is extremely unstable or slow at specific times of the day and then other times of the day it works fine. It is very difficult to explain to customer support of the ISP's especially when they want to do tests and the problem would vanish at that time, making troubleshooting difficult. I need a way to show the ISP with proof how and when service deteriorates.

Solution:

Introducing ISP Logger

ISP Logger is a tiny Open Source script that runs on Linux, MacOS and Windows via a Docker image. It performs a test every hour and sends the data to a cloud based server. With a modern cloud based Dashboard analyse your connections performance and stability from anywhere.

Features: - Log from any device that supports Docker. - Automatically locates a local test server. - Browse your results on an easy to use dashboard. - Export results data in JSON and CSV (coming soon). - Graph out all results and to find poor times.

Tech Stack: - The Docker Image is uses Python - The Backend is written in Python and uses the Django Web Framework. - The Frontend is built with React (Next JS) and the Bulma CSS Framework.

Try it out now over at https://www.isplogger.com. Get started for free.

Open Source:

The client is fully open source. Contributors get upgraded to PRO at no cost. ISP Logger on Github

ronaldl93··on Show HN: McDonalds' outlets in the US represented by Burger emojis
wow... What device / OS are you using? The site uses regular Emoji's as opposed to images to ensure your cpu doesn't slow down.

ronaldl93··on Show HN: I developed an automated Startup / Investor matching service
Just thought I'd share my latest client work.

It was developed in Python / Django and runs on an Ubuntu VPS.

Every 24 hours a matching algorithm I developed runs and see if it can find matches based on both the Startup and Investor criteria.

This is just the MVP, developed on a fairly limited budget.

Here's my personal website - I'm available for projects https://www.ronaldlangeveld.com/

ronaldl93··on Show HN: I made a live Loadshedding status page in React
Hi HN. I live in South Africa and we unfortunately have this thing called Loadshedding that causes the power to go off every couple of hours a few times a day.

I made a little web app to that shows the current status of the power grid, pretty much to get the hang of React JS.

Cheers!

ronaldl93··on Ask HN: Do you still pay with Paypal?
Ohh, I actually bought your app last year sometime. :) That's kinda made me use Paddle in the past. :D
ronaldl93··on Ask HN: Do you still pay with Paypal?
Definitely seems worth it in the long run... but just don't see myself forking out a couple hundred USD when I just wanna validate a little app I built.
ronaldl93··on Ask HN: Do you still pay with Paypal?
Thanks will check it out!
ronaldl93··on Show HN: I made a web-app to help me keep track of the books I'm reading
Just thought I'd share a little something I've made over the last week while learning React and Node JS.

Hopefully I finish more books now and I opened it up so you can too.

Cheers!

ronaldl93··on Ask HN: Who all are web developers here on HN, your web stack?
I'm generally quite straight forward with my stack - Python/Django and Jinja templating. DB depends on the size of the project - not shy to to use sqlite for MVP sites, but bigger projects roll on Postgresql.

I am currently learning Vuejs as well to be able to write api based web apps.

ronaldl93··on Show HN: I made a simple email reminder app called Please Remind Me
Hi everyone!

This is my first little product and I'm super excited to show you what I built over the last 2 weeks. This is basically me scratching my own itch.

The Problem I’m generally quite bad at remembering things. And personally, just setting an iPhone reminder isn’t effective at all. I tend to kill the reminder and then forget about it again seconds later. Or I tend to factory reset my phone quite often so the reminder goes with that. I really need either an email reminder on the day I need to be reminded and a way to remind other people close to me of the same thing. I can’t rely on myself to remember. I really need teamwork vibes.

The Solution A simple and easy to use reminder management system that allows you to automate reminder emails to yourself and whoever else you want to be reminded. You simply create a new reminder, write what you want to be reminded about, set a date when you would like to be reminded and it will automatically send on that day. So now, if I set a reminder and include my brother’s email addresses we will not forget Mothers Day next year. Simple example, but this is intended to be used with even more important things that you don’t think about everyday, like being reminded before your passport expires, car license, bills that needs to be paid in time, etc.

The Future Telegram, WhatsApp and SMS reminders are coming soon.

Cheers and I'm happy to answer any questions!

ronaldl93··on How to delete Facebook and not lose your friends and photos
I first joined it in 2007, meaning I was 13 or 14 years old :). Being South African, the adoption rate for internet here was quite slow compared to first world countries. So back then it literally was like the cool thing to be on, just like being the kid on the block with latest and greatest Playstation or motorbike.

From a socio economic point of view. It's actually terribly when I think of it today. But that's just how it were growing up.

ronaldl93··on Ask HN: Cheap places to live with a good intellectual atmosphere?
I live on the South Coast. I deal with R1400/m (±$100) for 220gb data (LTE) to be able to work. Our Neighbourhood's Telkom copper got stolen 8 times this year. Shitty, I know.

But on the bright side, waking up with a gorgeous view over a river and the ocean every morning, nice and quiet does a lot of good mentally, especially having lived in one of the largest cities in the world for 5 years prior.

And yes, there's crime. Gotta activate the alarm system at night.

ronaldl93··on How to delete Facebook and not lose your friends and photos
Ah yes exactly. For a while I just never logged in, and then suddenly FB started spamming me with emails. "John misses you." "Susan posted something recently, see what she posted." etc etc.
ronaldl93··on Ask HN: Cheap places to live with a good intellectual atmosphere?
Yeah for sure... I get exactly what you're saying. I surf so this is the main reason I'm here for now.. I am working remotely though and will be moving back to Asia later this year, before the vaalies pull in.

But otherwise, in terms of weather - you can't beat it.

And yes... I think this place is kinda giving me "island syndrome"... That's why I need to get out of this place for a bit. haha

ronaldl93··on How to delete Facebook and not lose your friends and photos
Likewise. I'm still on Instagram and Whatsapp... But in terms of controlling the content you see, Instagram and Whatsapp are a lot more manageable compared to Facebook - especially considering the state my FB was in.

I'm trying to win my friends over to use Telegram instead. It's miles ahead of Whatsapp in my opinion.
