ronakjain90··on Ask HN: In your experience, what are sound conventions for e-ink UI development?
TRMNL recently open sourced a CSS framework made specifically for ePaper display [1], you can use the opensource firmware[2] and quickly hack together a good solution using off the self components.

Disclosure: I work at TRMNL.

ronakjain90··on AWS multiple services outage in us-east-1
we[1] operate out of `us-east-1` but chose to not use any of the cloud based vendor lockin (sorry vercel, supabase, firebase, planetscale etc). Rather a few droplets in DigitalOcean(us-east-1) and Hetzner(eu). We serve 100 million requests/mo, few million user generated content(images)/mo at monthly cost of just about $1000/mo.

It's not difficult, it's just that we engineers chose convenience and delegated uptime to someone else.

ronakjain90··on Show HN: Air Lab – A portable and open air quality measuring device
Your product looks so good, congratulations on your launch.

Have you considered making a standalone devices with just sensors (think data only mode) and letting the users hook up their data on any eink dashboard of their choice.

Below are some of the example of community created Air Quality dashboards[1] installable on any e-ink hardware[2].

ronakjain90··on MomBoard: E-ink display for a parent with amnesia
That's the exact reason we built TRMNL, because your phone is consistently trying to seek your attention (hence distraction). TRMNL helps build personal dashboard without necessarily creating chaos. We built handful of native integrations[1], but you can completely hack it and create your own dashboard with simple HTML content[2].

ronakjain90··on MomBoard: E-ink display for a parent with amnesia
I think you should also checkout TRMNL. Being engineers ourself security/privacy is of atmost concern, and we follow a similar architecture mentioned above. You could create a private plugin and send in data in the form of REST APIs[1]. You could also use your own webserver by hacking the firmware[2]

You should check out usetrmnl.com. It's commercially available and has 50+ native plugins and many community driven recipes[1].

It's shipped from USA.

ronakjain90··on Ease of maintenance is a feature
Every time I setup a JS project which is older than a few years, it's

1. Extremely difficult to setup the code base, because of dependency spaghetti 2. Lot of breaking changes across different libraries, making maintenance not so easy.

Easiest projects to maintain were written on Go, Java, Ruby,

ronakjain90··on Iranian law prohibits merge of PR from Israeli?
How is accepting a PR account to having a relationship with an individual. Popular OS repository would have code contribution from 1000s of contributor, it's possible that the maintainer don't personally know a majority of them. This just don't make sense.
ronakjain90··on Show HN: I passed up an opportunity to make $200K from my microstartup
I think, it makes sense to sell Standalone Mac/Windows/ Apps or Browser extension because there is no OPS overhead even if you make a $1M in sales.
ronakjain90··on Apple takes Prepear logo trademark fight to Canada
Apple is being what Microsoft was a decade back. It's only a matter of time when people start hating them so much, it'd cost them the next decade.
ronakjain90··on Show HN: Parents, would your kids like these videos and stem activities?
Can't believe I get to interact with a creator my daughter absolutely loves and adore. She loves watching all those mini science experiments and often demand that we (parents) recreate those experiments for her to see it live.

Thank you so much for what you do.

ronakjain90··on Show HN: DropList - Send your marketing campaigns 100x cheaper
Congratulations on the launch, how does it differs from that of listmonk[1], it's open source and battle tested at Zerodha. Ability to create templates via a drag/drop tool would give marketers a lot less friction.

Hi there -

Looks very neat, would give it a try.

ronakjain90··on Ask HN: How to hire freelance developer for an MVP?
As a software consultant with decade worth of experience, I've seen non-technical founders getting ripped off and getting substandard product. It's generally because, while they do have a clear vision of what they want, they do not have the ability to gauge the skill set of the agency/freelancer they are dealing with. In one case, despite paying full, my client didn't have access to the code and the agency became hostile when they started to feel the client slipping away. We had to send legal notice to get access to the code.

Here are some tips:

1. Check for their LinkedIn profile and actually do attempt to talk with their clients. Do your research well, cold email should work.

2. See how old their clients are and if they are still in business. Substandard product reduces the probability of the project to succeed.

3. Involving external consultants to help you evaluate the Agency/Freelancer suited for your business. They would provide unbiased opinion which would help a lot.

4. Always go slow, it might even make sense to comission 5-10% of the project and see how they perform. It reduces your overall ridk.

5. Check their GitHub account for open source projects to gauge on technical competency.

6. If you can't afford an architect, I'd still recommend getting few hour worth of their time to sense how the project is progressing technically. They would assist like a consulting CTO.

There are scammers everywhere, the onus is on us to be diligent.

Shameless plug: I run an agency, email in my profile. Do send me an email if you need any help.
