romperstomper··on Show HN: Doom port to pure Go – Gore
Just curios, why everything is in a single large file (doom.go ~46K LOC)? Is it because of how Go handle modules?
romperstomper··on Ollama Turbo
It is weird but when I tried new gpt-oss:b20 model locally llama.cpp just failed instantly for me. At the same time under ollama it worked (very slow but anyway). I didn't find how to deal with llama.cpp but ollama definitely doing something under the hood to make models work.
romperstomper··on SCP-055 is an "antimeme" – it erases itself from memory when observed
can robots with AI investigate this thing and draw any conclusions on its nature? :)
romperstomper··on Second Variety, by Philip K. Dick (1953)
I also love Dick's essay on fiction writing "How to Build a Universe That Doesn't Fall Apart Two Days Later"
romperstomper··on Next month, saved passwords will no longer be in Microsoft’s Authenticator app
As far as I understand the passkey are not to be intended to sink across devices. They unlock private keys stored on device and these keys are used for authorization on web sites etc. At least this was my understanding when last time I tried to grok passkeys :)
romperstomper··on Show HN: Local LLM Notepad – run a GPT-style model from a USB stick
Seconded for Llamafile, here is a link for references https://github.com/Mozilla-Ocho/llamafile . It indeed is working on all major platforms and its tooling allows easy creating of new llamafiles with new models. The only caveat is Windows where there is a limit 4Gb for executable files so just a llamafile launcher and the gguf file itself must be used. But this approach will work anywhere anyway.
romperstomper··on China breaks RSA encryption with a quantum computer
This is just a repeat. At the end they have the link to the original article from 2024.
romperstomper··on How to Read a Novel
This is why I mostly gave up to read anything on substack - articles there often have quite catchy titles but at the end they often are not related to article's contents.
romperstomper··on Ukraine destroys more than 40 military aircraft in drone attack deep in Russia
Neither Starshield
romperstomper··on Ukraine destroys more than 40 military aircraft in drone attack deep in Russia
obviously StarLink doesn't work in the deeps of russian territories
romperstomper··on The Universe Is 'Suspiciously' Like a Computer Simulation, Physicist Says
This article reminds me David Chalmers' "Reality+" book, it has many similar ideas
romperstomper··on uBlock Origin Lite beta version for Safari
In the link it says "for Safari on both macOS and iOS", so I hope it should work in iOS as well.
romperstomper··on WASM 2.0
They also say at the end "In a future post we will take a look at Wasm 3.0, which is already around the corner at this point!" so I suppose the Wasm 3.0 is coming very soon?
romperstomper··on Egg prices are soaring. Are backyard chickens the answer?
This all reminds me this "The Mitchell and Webb Situation - Farming" sketch :)

romperstomper··on Llama.cpp supports Vulkan. why doesn't Ollama?
You don't need any infrastructure for llamafiles, you just download and run them (everywhere).
romperstomper··on Ask HN: How to learn AI from first principles?
I think Ian Goodfellow's "The Deep Learning" textbook fits well to the list.

romperstomper··on Apache Iceberg
I'm not sure what do you mean by "absurd setup". In case of Athena you just use the iceberg type for a table as you create it and that's it. Under the hood AWS also uses Trino or Presto as far as I know.
romperstomper··on Sweden Seizes Ship Suspected of Baltic Sea 'Sabotage'
Totally agree. No incidents before the war (or at least not so many). Half a dozen incidents during last 2-3 years. Just after the sanctions were placed by the EU, the US etc. I'm really doubt these are the accidents.
romperstomper··on Apache Iceberg
you can just use iceberg tables with AWS Glue/Athena
romperstomper··on Ask HN: How does JetBrains protect their IDE Java source code?
you can also just pay for 12 months (sometimes it comes with some discount) or just pay month by month during last 12 months and you will have the perpetual fallback license after that which lasts forever (though you won't get updates until you start monthly payments again)
romperstomper··on Australia moves to drop some cryptography by 2030 – before quantum carves it up
That's interesting, thanks for the link! I also thought that ECDSA and ECDH are post-quantum compliant.
romperstomper··on Police seize Matrix encrypted chat service after spying on criminals
This is not the well-known Matrix service but another illegal service with the same name
romperstomper··on Distributed Systems 4th Edition
Nothing received so far, waited for several hours and re-requested personalized version. Are emails from proton.me are blocked as well?

P.S. the blinking list of spam domains are rather annoying. Just the complete list would be more useful as for me.

romperstomper··on Everything I've learned so far about running local LLMs
llamafile simplified it even further - you just download and run it :)
romperstomper··on Ask HN: Best Cyber Warfare Books?
+1 for "Countdown to Zero Day"
romperstomper··on Watermark for LLM-Generated Text

romperstomper··on China Extends the "Great Firewall" into Space
I also was thinking why they did this but then saw this https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=41926982 so probably this is because they are building their own satellites network.
romperstomper··on Debunking Hype: China Hasn't Broken Military Encryption with Quantum
I didn't trust the initial news as well, there wasn't any mention of AES in the original paper indeed
romperstomper··on Show HN: 4B+ DNS Records Dataset
There are quite many duplicates, looks like for CNAME records only/mostly. Here are some from the beginning
