romanzubenko··on High Density Living, 2000 Years Ago: Inside the Roman Apartment Building
I really really wish, there was a VR game/app where I can transport myself to different places/times in the past and just walk around to get the texture and feel for what it felt like living in that time.

Walking around a Roman town, hearing what people talked like, what they wore, what technology was around, what did they do most of the day.

Someone please make it real.

romanzubenko··on OpenAI says its new model GPT-2 is too dangerous to release (2019)
I remember seeing this article and example output text and feeling what's the big deal?

It wasn't until I got early access to GPT-3, that I though like something big is about to happen. At the time only a few companies/yc alums had access and I remember showing playground to people outside of tech, and my friend just kept asking "How does it know about my [x] domain? It it a trick?".

romanzubenko··on Ask HN: GCP Outage?
We first noticed google login issues with our app, can't login with google anywhere now, Google Analytics is down as well.
romanzubenko··on Judge said Meta illegally used books to build its AI
This is actually clever, let the market decide the price and the worth of each book for training. Pricing per model might be tricky, instead annual licensing for training might be better pricing structure. Very quickly all big publishers and big labs might find very precisely what the fair price is to pay per book/catalogue.
romanzubenko··on I tried making artificial sunlight at home
What’s the mechanism for sunlight/artificial light psoriasis treatment?
romanzubenko··on Thank HN: My bootstrapped startup got acquired today
Amazing outcome, congratulations! Back in 2015 working at Gusto as the first growth engineer I remember reading vwo blog to understand how a/b testing works.
romanzubenko··on Bench accounting services shutting down
If you are an ecom brand or tech startup - I'm CEO of Afternoon.co (YC F25) providing same services as Bench including year end tax filing, ready to onboard you asap, just email me at roman@afternoon.co
romanzubenko··on Show HN: I made a tiny camera with super long battery life
Amazing post, read through all blog posts in a single beat. I would be great to have a final blogpost on assembly process.

On a different note, it's mind-blowing that today one person today can do small scale design and manufacturing of a consumer electronics product. Super inspiring.

romanzubenko··on The President of Iran has died
President of Iran is not head of state for Iran, you might be thinking of Supreme Leader of Iran, Ali Khamenei, who is very much alive.
romanzubenko··on Ask HN: Do you also marvel at the complexity of everyday objects?
Not just the complexity but the absurd amount of human effort behind to produce every object around us.

As John Collison tweeted: "As you become an adult, you realize that things around you weren't just always there; people made them happen. But only recently have I started to internalize how much tenacity everything requires. That hotel, that park, that railway. The world is a museum of passion projects."

romanzubenko··on A drone that calculates coordinates using a camera and Google Maps
During the hackathon the team only did a simulated flight, not a real flight, so take the results on effectiveness with a grain of salt. In any environment with significant seasonal changes, localization based on google maps will be a lot harder.
romanzubenko··on Stable-Audio-Demo
As with Stable Diffusion, text prompting will be the least controllable way to get useful output with this model. I can easily imagine midi being used as an input with control net to essentially get a neural synthesizer.
romanzubenko··on Thoughts on tech employment
Did anyone perform an analysis on where the laid off employees for last 3 years went? According to layoffs.fyi nearly 500k were laid off since 2021, would be interesting to see if people mostly reshuffled within FAANG or there was a more structural talent migration e.g. from megacorps to startups.
romanzubenko··on 23andMe's Fall
in 2021 Sequoia switched their strategy to hold on to stock of their portfolio companies for few more years after IPO.

"Sequoia is abandoning the 10-year venture fund, in which limited partners, the outside investors that contribute to the fund, expect to get paid back over a decade. The firm said it’s establishing a single fund, the Sequoia Fund, that will raise money from LPs and then funnel that capital down to a series of smaller funds that invest by stage.

Proceeds from those funds will feed back into the Sequoia Fund. With no time horizon, Sequoia can hold public stock for longer stretches, rather than distributing those shares to LPs. Investors who want liquidity can pull money out instead of waiting for distributions."

romanzubenko··on PoW gets his life back after 55 years (2000)
fwiw according to Russian news[0] workers knew he was Hungarian, and reached out to Hungarian officials to claim him, but didn't hear back. According to article at the time when Hungary was prepping to join EU, ex nazi PoW was not a priority.

He only was "rediscovered", when Russian hospital personnel got him speaking Hungarian on camera for Russian news, and eventually news segment was picked up in Hungary and 80 Hungarian families came forward to claim him as a missing relative.

romanzubenko··on Russia Starts Blocking VPN Protocols
I set up WireGuard server for my family back in Russia in the first days of the war and since then provided VPN access to a few more families. It’s been a lot more stable than relying on popular VPN providers who get banned one after another.

Any advice on alternatives to WireGuard, if Russian gov manages to ban it on protocol level with DPI?

romanzubenko··on LoRA: Low-Rank Adaptation of Large Language Models
Today Databricks announced [0] 6b parameter model from EleutherAI finetuned on Alpaca dataset. According to their CEO[1], training took 3 hours, and costed $30. They didn't release any details on how it was trained, but likely with LoRa.

romanzubenko··on John Carmack's new AGI company, Keen Technologies, has raised a $20M round
IIRC Medium was similarly funded with VC, and founders specifically decided not to fund it themselves and treated external capital as an accountability mechanism.
romanzubenko··on Ask HN: What game do you wish existed?
[VR Time Machine]

Teleport to historic and ancient cities and just walk around immersing yourself in architecture, languages, commerce and food. Imagine walking around in ancient Mayan, Egyptian cities hearing speech that is close enough to what people spoke at that time, witnessing day to day life thousands of years ago.

romanzubenko··on Start Self Hosting
Self hosting can also be a great option to protect against authoritarian regimes. After my family’s VPN was banned in Russia a few weeks ago, it took me an hour to set up Wireguard server with Algo VPN on digital ocean. Now I’m supporting uncensored internet access for 3 families back home, while Russian authorities playing cat and mouse games with popular VPN providers.

romanzubenko··on ‘I was just scared’: Apple AirTags lead to stalking complaints
A month ago, almost everyone in my family received "unknown accessory detected with you" alert on our iPhones. It was scary, and we spent hours looking for an Airtag in every crevice of the car, and checking every bag we had. Couldn't find anything.

After extensive googling, we found numerous reports online about AirPods Pro most likely having a bug alerting their owners about "unknown accessory". If it's true, and firmware had a bug, Apple was probably in a weird position of not being able to publicly acknowledge it, to avoid potentially giving a false sense of security to folks who actually had the real alerts.

For us the alert never reoccured, and FindMy was erroring out when we clicked on "get more info about the device", so most likely it was a bug.

romanzubenko··on Show HN: CodeCaptcha - Hide web links behind coding challenges
Years ago at green tech college hackathon my team built a captcha that requires users to correctly sort trash into recycling, compost and non-recyclable bins. Anything little bit more fun is better than mind numbing selecting traffic lights, boats and trains.
romanzubenko··on A fly's brain calculates its position in space
In 2020 my friend and I have spent months building a self driving scrubber, the machine janitors use to clean large hard floors. As we were building navigation stack and SLAM, I always was fascinated of possibly using neural networks in some capacity to improve current state of art. Clearly many insects, including flies use very small natural compute to keep track of where they are in space.
romanzubenko··on “Free PACER” bill advances through Senate judiciary unanimously
The best part was for us was that after wrangling with their native API, we decided to go with one of the private companies that provide sane API wrapper on top of PACER. It's kinda crazy that there is a small industry of companies who make government api better. You can see some of these services by googling "bankruptcy monitoring".
romanzubenko··on “Free PACER” bill advances through Senate judiciary unanimously
This is great news. I had to implement PACER integration back in my days at Gusto for compliance and the pricing among many other things was very annoying to work with. The pricing is based on "number of pages" returned, which means that when you submit a query you don't know exactly how it will cost you ahead of time.
