roman_soldier··on Show HN: TUI for managing XDG default applications
Nice, but problem with all these AI coded TUI's is we will have hundreds of them, best to stick to the built in linux commands, add aliases/abbreviations (fish) if required, do you need a TUI for everything? Sometimes the answer to "Should I write this?" Is no
roman_soldier··on Advent of Code 2025
No I get that, it's just not for me that's all.
roman_soldier··on Advent of Code 2025
Never got that, I have plenty of "puzzles" to solve in work and life which have real outcomes. I guess Im too utilitarian to enjoy puzzles with ROI.
roman_soldier··on Advent of Code 2025
Not a fan of these "Coding for fun" things. Code for a job to earn money, yes, a side project where there is an end goal, yes. This seems like a waste of time for working developer.

Maybe it's useful for people trying to learn but also becoming pointless now as all Junior dev roles can be done with AI.

I mean do plumbers have an advent of plumbing where they try and unblock shit filled toilets for fun?

roman_soldier··on Ilya Sutskever: We're moving from the age of scaling to the age of research
10x to 100x and order of magnitude is a factor of 10.
roman_soldier··on Ilya Sutskever: We're moving from the age of scaling to the age of research
Scaling got us here and it wasn't obvious that it would produce the results we have now, so who's to say sentience won't emerge from scaling another few orders of magnitude?

Of course there will always be research to squeeze more out of the compute, improving efficiency and perhaps make breakthroughs.

roman_soldier··on Google Antigravity
Another google product, there are too many and which ones will be around in a year or two?
roman_soldier··on Gemini 3 Pro Model Card [pdf]
Why is Grok 4.1 not in the benchmarks?
roman_soldier··on AirPods libreated from Apple's ecosystem
There is zero business sense in making it work as good on non Apple phones. There are plenty of other headphones to choose from that work well with android etc.
roman_soldier··on IDEmacs: A Visual Studio Code clone for Emacs
Well people will vote with their mouse clicks, and they have, < 1% of devs use Emacs vs VS Code which is probably 20-30x.
roman_soldier··on IDEmacs: A Visual Studio Code clone for Emacs
The data shows VS Code is used by double digit % of developers, whereas Emacs is less than 1%, I think that qualifies for most.
roman_soldier··on Things that aren't doing the thing
In other words https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXsQAXx_ao0
roman_soldier··on IDEmacs: A Visual Studio Code clone for Emacs
This, most people that try and use these legacy editors spend most of their time configuring it get it to be as good as vs code and usually fail. A lot of wasted time and frustration when one click gives you a perfectly modern fast editor with a smorgasbord of great extensions that just work. I do use vim for quick editing of files in the terminal but never for serious work.
roman_soldier··on AirPods libreated from Apple's ecosystem
A lot of Apple products are designed to best work with other Apple products, that's part of their selling point. Would it not be easier to just buy non Apple headphones if you are not in the Apple eco system?
roman_soldier··on Blue Origin lands New Glenn rocket booster on second try
This isn't just first to market it's been 10 years and SpaceX is still innovating. I applaud Bezos for at least offering some sort of competition though it will keep SpaceX from becoming complacent.
roman_soldier··on Blue Origin lands New Glenn rocket booster on second try
NASA never created rapidly reusable rockets, which is what we are talking about here.
roman_soldier··on SlopStop: Community-driven AI slop detection in Kagi Search
Then people can downvote AI slop or Human slop equally. Why do we need to discriminate against digital intelligence which is often leagues above the average mouth breathing Joe.
roman_soldier··on Blue Origin lands New Glenn rocket booster on second try
I think this is more like the Fire phone vs the iPhone.
roman_soldier··on SlopStop: Community-driven AI slop detection in Kagi Search
What about human slop? start with HN a significant number of comments are pretty dire.
roman_soldier··on Blue Origin lands New Glenn rocket booster on second try
Congrats but it's kinda like a company, releasing in 2030, an LLM equivalent to the first version of chatGPT. SpaceX did this 10 years ago.
roman_soldier··on Waymo robotaxis are now giving rides on freeways in LA, SF and Phoenix
Given Waymo are just now able to go on the highway which Tesla's have been doing for years they are already way ahead. Waymo won't exist this time next year they can't compete on scaling and price.
roman_soldier··on Grok 4 Fast now has 2M context window
At least Elon is open about what he believes. Other CEO's hide behind corporate PR machines, how do you know they are not psychopaths.
roman_soldier··on Grok 4 Fast now has 2M context window
Yes allegedly having an employee bumped off for whistleblowing and the sister thing is way worse than someone having a different opinion than you. One is criminal the other is free speech.
roman_soldier··on Ask HN: Where to begin with "modern" Emacs?
How is my comment off topic? VS Code is an editor as is emacs. There is nothing in the guidelines link that would constitute my post being wrong, however it does say

'Please don't post shallow dismissals, especially of other people's work. A good critical comment teaches us something.'

and

'Please don't complain that a submission is inappropriate. If a story is spam or off-topic, flag it. Don't feed egregious comments by replying; flag them instead. If you flag, please don't also comment that you did.'

Maybe it would help if you reread the guidelines yourself.

roman_soldier··on Ask HN: Where to begin with "modern" Emacs?
Emacs is not modern, to achieve the functionality of a modern editor/ide, with all the lessons/research done since the 70/80's it's going to take a huge amount of configuring. It's logical that using a modern editor like VS Code would be much more efficient.
roman_soldier··on Claude outage
Yes because anyone offering a positive opinion on Grok or one of Elon's companies must have been bought.
roman_soldier··on Claude outage
Switch to Grok or vice versa (I have Pro on both), or use any one of the other free tier LLM's (Gemini, ChatGPT etc)
roman_soldier··on Claude outage
Grok seems to have much better uptime, I have Pro sub on both Claude and Grok so just switch between them.

roman_soldier··on Tesla Q3 2025 Update
So you are correct about Tesla's valuation but the market and all it's millions of participants as well as analysts, who have price targets well above the price now, are wrong. Erm ok. The stock price is whatever someone is willing to pay for it so it can't be 'overvalued'.

I guessing you would think a Picasso painting selling at $10 million is way over valued as the paint and canvas it was painted on are only worth $50.
