Penitent monday-morning data scientist, I love to build stuff with code even though I suck at programming.

romain_g··on How Money Moves Around The Banking System
Interesting ! An excellent introduction is also available as a coursera class (by Perry Mehrling from Columbia U) at https://www.coursera.org/course/money and https://www.coursera.org/course/money2 !
romain_g··on What is the best way to programatically detect porn images? (2009)
Would it be this one? http://www.buzzfeed.com/reyhan/tech-confessional-the-googler...
romain_g··on You should blog even if you have no readers
Awesome post indeed, thanks!
romain_g··on You should blog even if you have no readers
That's great, it seems like a bunch of happy "accidents" happened in connection to your activities as a blogger. Was it a technical blog? What pushed you to start a blog in the first place?
romain_g··on Show HN: TL;DRizer - an algorithmic summarizer webapp/api in java (weekend hack)
You might want to look into topic modeling to extract the most meaningful topics (set of co-occuring words). It could greatly improve your results compared to the keyword approach. Interesting initiative, keep us posted !
romain_g··on No Desire To Spend
Coursera has just announced a class : "Fundamentals of Personal Finance" (https://www.coursera.org/course/financialplanning)

romain_g··on Issues
"For once you start down the path of the mealy-mouthed forever will it dominate your vocabulary."

It already dominates the world.

romain_g··on Ask HN: What are some problems you have that you'd like people to solve?
"What people would be willing to use" seems like a more fertile approach. Open your eyes and spot repetitive, boring task that one has to deal with on a regular basis !

If you have users, everything else with follow. Good luck !

I am not sure you'll find so many people here that are : - able to read French - interested in investing in French real estate
romain_g··on 10 Important Blog Design Factors — Monetize Blogging
Hey, you gave the wrong link, this one worked for me : http://www.monetizeblogging.com/important-blog-design-factor...
romain_g··on Apology to 37signals
No matter how people on both sides react, they are all at the very least decently smart persons and an acceptable apology shouldn't be only a place for redemption. I can't imagine people at Curebit assuming that the ripoff wouldn't be discovered. So why did they do that?
romain_g··on Map of C++
Neat! Though the image was slow to get loaded and it took me a minute to realize the title was "cpp" and not "cccp" :-)
romain_g··on Image Processing Algorithms: Mathematical Explanations and Online Experiments
Great! I have been working on a contribution for a little while now. Some of the C implementations are amazingly well written.
romain_g··on Guidance for the Aspiring Software Craftsman
I agree, but it is still a comforting entrance sign for those who fear programming. It is common sense, yes, but the interest of it is to show that general principles also stand for software development.
romain_g··on Doing a startup taught me the value of staying in school
Great post. However, deciding whether the range of options you are considering to solve a problem is too narrow seems to be more easier in small business structures as a result of efficient interactions. University didn't teach me which method is the best, but that other methods very often exist. And how to decide which one is the most interesting for my own need.
romain_g··on Textify: Convert images to HTML text
That is really great! Besides export options, what would it take to be able to modify the density over certain areas of the output image?
