rom16384··on What even is an OS now?
Most kids only knew how to type LOAD ""

Some kids thought it was awesome to make the computer do stuff and learned how to program.

rom16384··on Wallace the 6 inch f/2.8 telescope, building it, and hiking with it
Quite an impressive build. How hard is it to collimate the telescope? Does it hold the collimation?
rom16384··on Migrating from Heroku to Magic Containers
Magic containers can only pull images from DockerHub or Github, no other registry is supported. I wish they supported private registries (or BitBucket). These limitations make me reluctant to use it, and I wonder what else is missing.

I don't have ADHD but I've set Codex CLI to send me a push notification via PushOver when it ends its turn and it helps a lot.

rom16384··on Do things that don't scale, and then don't scale
I understand the negative focus group part. The internet radio stations I like end up closing. I dislike advertising, but radio stations without income are unsustainable. This makes it hard for me to design products since they will likely fail! Maybe I should design them to be the opposite of what I'd like them to be...
rom16384··on Making Postgres slower
The Postgres defaults in debian are understandably conservative to make it run everywhere. When I first installed Postgres I found it rather slow even on a good server. Only after reading guides on the web I found out why, the default RAM usage is limited to something like 32 MB which is way too low.
rom16384··on The world could run on older hardware if software optimization was a priority
I had the same realization but with car mechanics. If you drive a beater you want to spend the least possible on maintenance. On the other hand, if the car mechanic cares about cars and their craftsmanship they want to get everything to tip-top shape at high cost. Some other mechanics are trying to scam you and get the most amount of money for the least amount of work. And most people looking for car mechanics want to pay the least amount possible, and don't quite understand if a repair should be expensive or not. This creates a downward pressure on price at the expense of quality and penalizes the mechanics that care about quality.
rom16384··on Gandi March 9, 2025 incident postmortem
What registar do you recommend? I used Gandi because it was a no-nonsense registar, even if a bit more expensive.
rom16384··on Dopamine signals when a fear can be forgotten
Ask Google Deep Research, I'm sure it will do a good enough job
rom16384··on JetBrains defends removal of negative reviews for unpopular AI Assistant
I've also cancelled my Intellij Ultimate subscription, because I feel Jetbrains lost its direction. They've made the classic interface a plugin and replaced it with a VSCode lookalike, and didn't have an integrated AI assistant that accepts your own API key. I'm ok with them selling their own AI subscriptions but let me use AI autocomplete on my pro subscription without further charges as long as I supply the LLM model API.
rom16384··on Google Is a Monopolist in Online Advertising Tech, Judge Says
You could try AppLovin MAX, even if it's best for games.
rom16384··on Atari Missile Command Game Built Using AI Gemini 2.5 Pro
Unfortunately I think this will the the future of vibe coding. Minified blobs of code that only the AI is able to edit. We don't usually review the compiler's use of registers or memory allocation after all.
rom16384··on Show HN: Atari Missile Command Game Built Using AI Gemini 2.5 Pro
I also find Roo Code chats add way too much stuff. I'd would like something that only includes to the context exactly the files I want, and only calls the model when I want. Using AI Studio with custom system prompt works, but is not as fast, but with Roo / Cline the costs can explode if you are not careful to create new tasks.
rom16384··on TV Garden
You may find the Podcast Index [1] project interesting, it tries to create an open index of all podcasts, and currently has 4.5M podcasts. It has a downloadable sqlite database and an API.

rom16384··on Gemini 2.5 Pro vs. Claude 3.7 Sonnet: Coding Comparison
You can fix this using a system prompt to force it to reply just with a diff. It makes the generation much faster and much less prone to changing unrelated lines. Also try reducing the temperature to 0.4 for example, I find the default temperature of 1 too high. For sample system prompts see Aider Chat: https://github.com/Aider-AI/aider/blob/main/aider/coders/edi...
rom16384··on "Big 3" science fiction magazines including Asimov's and Analog acquired
I used to buy Analog on paper once in a while. A few years back I wanted to subscribe the digital version, but there wasn't a convenient way to do so, just closed platforms and drm'd readers, so I didn't subscribe. Don't make it hard for people to give you money. They could just email pdfs...
rom16384··on Ask HN: Do your eyes bug you even though your prescription is "correct"?
I found an ophthalmologist that gets my prescription right, with optometrists it's a roll of the dice.
rom16384··on DeepSeek gives Europe's tech firms a chance to catch up
In my own tests even the 70B distill has an unacceptably high rate of hallucinations that makes it hard to trust the results.

rom16384··on Ask HN: Code Llama 70B on a dedicated server
Using llama.cpp on a 128 GB server running codellama-70b-python.Q4_K_M.gguf I get 1.3 tokens per second which is too slow. With Nous-Hermes-2-Mistral-7B-DPO.Q5_K_M.gguf I get 8.3 tokens per second which is usable.
rom16384··on The camel, the rope, and the needle's eye
Arguably there is a reference to female homosexual relationships in Romans 1:26, "For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature."
