rolltiide··on U.S. Labor Department allows unemployment benefits for coronavirus
Oh right because all of our pensions systems are based on people actually dying after 60, keep forgetting that.
rolltiide··on IBM sues Airbnb for patent royalties
I think the lengths is only one possible solution. The other broken part is that the inventor has one idea they want to spread the knowledge of, but their patent attorney makes it overly broad and unrecognizable. Nobody even knows what the patent is about, sparing one “embodiment” described but not even part of the important “claims”. This is a rational reaction to the only way to make royalties on a patent because everyone would prefer to circumvent them instead of utilize them. Very broken incentive model.

Cant AirBnB just stop marketing and slow their runway burn to almost nothing?

They dont provide infrastructure or subsidies it should be okay

rolltiide··on NBCUniversal Sold $500M Stake in Snapchat
> Except $500M barely register for a company the size of NBCUniversal

Since it was in Comcast's quarterly report, it was large enough to "register".

rolltiide··on NBCUniversal Sold $500M Stake in Snapchat
> I never understand the "Quietly" part in headlines like this. The fact that it's headline news is kind of self-refuting

It was in Comcast's quarterly report filed on January 31st, but even then it would need to be compared to the prior quarterly report 3 months earlier. So nobody - with write access to any website - noticed until March 9th.

> and even without that, where do people usually shout about the positions that they're selling?

Anyway, NBC was not within reporting thresholds for Snapchat.

I read dissenting opinions on Supreme Court cases and have gotten the most insight into possible perspectives.

I would definitely like to see the “dissenting list”, even though in this case it would be by the same person instead of the part of a committee that didnt gain consensus

Isn't this the underlying plot of Maze Runner, and a bunch of other books/movies?

A decade of young adult fiction dystopian worlds of only young adults, followed by an actual decade of dystopian world of only young adults.

rolltiide··on Google recommends all North America employees work from home
Merkel just said she expects 70% of Germany to be infected "and the room fell silent".

Maybe its just Germany efficiency and pragmatism of just acknowledging some people are going to die and some pension obligations will disappear. Whereas the rest of us are trying not to let those thoughts surface.

rolltiide··on WebGPU Shading Language

I found that to be a refreshingly pragmatic opinion piece

"I don't know, its kind of cool that Mar-a-Lago members get better trading information in a variety of markets where there are no insider prohibitions, but check out all the other zany things the SEC now regulates like civil wars in the Congo"

I wish more people wrote like that instead of using their write access to Bloomberg/Forbes/Hackernoon/Medium to masquerade their thoughts as policy or necessary tweaks to society.

rolltiide··on Ask HN: What's the best corporate password manager?
I just stopped called it 2fa, and just otp for “one time password”, the URI standard calls it otp:// as well

see problem solved, no need to debate how single or two factor a thing is and you can just focus on the attack vectors it actually still solves for, objectively

yes the password vault is a single point of failure if someone knows your vault password or key logs it.

All it ever needed was two additional levels of abstraction 20 years later to ever fulfill that promise, so obvious and purpose built!
rolltiide··on The Robber Bank: Can America Ever Rid Itself of Wells Fargo?
Presumes I'm committing crimes.

Most banks are skittish and provide lackluster services because they aren't sure about their relationship with the Federal Government.

Wells Fargo will do anything whoring for yield, because they can.

Everyone trying to 'de-platform' them is misguided.

> .... shady “customers, but also investors, but also customers.” It’s convenient having combo customer/investors. If quarterly numbers look bad, just ask your customers, who are also investors, to buy more services to prop up their own investment. After all, they wouldn’t want their investment decisions to look bad, right?

That's not shady, to me, it is a common practice and does take advantage of the accounting practices that different stakeholders use. This is what all of tech is doing with VC portfolios. That startup that delivers lunch to your startup, do you think that was random? It is an incestuous movement of money around VC portfolio companies to merely print higher revenue numbers so they can sell them one at a time for 10x those revenue numbers.

Pretty much nothing is organic, so I can't make a distinction for this particular practice. The market can bare it.

Honestly, it should be a more common practice for market participants to be taking pseudo-activist roles in their investments. Just because you are used to passive investments - and probably can't do anything else - doesn't mean it is the best strategy for your portfolio.

Not making any opinion about the other problems with Pivotal, just pointing out how this section isn't validation for the complaints.

rolltiide··on Europe’s old money mingles with tech startups

rolltiide··on iOS now requires Sign On with Apple alongside other auth providers
> apple is leveraging it's position in the mobile Phone space to push it's way into social login

but they aren't removing choice, they are only adding choice in their approval processes, and leaving it to the developers to decide to remove choice when they get social login fatigue but want high engagement and low friction. Looks like they dotted their I's and crossed their T's on this one.

rolltiide··on Europe’s old money mingles with tech startups
Yeah you can pretty much forget about wealthy Europeans doing anything at the speed of any business cycle. They are scared oldest sons managing a family office who have no idea what they are doing aside from breathing and making a baby in wedlock.

These people will put down $1 million dollar deposit to make it seem like they are serious about completing a deal, and will just let the timeline expire forfeiting the entire deposit!

Forget about the negative interest rates. Unless you can tap into the high yield corporate debt market, then dealing with these rich people is hopeless.

Source: Been around a lot of wealthy Europeans that talked a big game. It is the most ridiculous stable business climate on Earth. I do not recommend, especially for tech.

rolltiide··on iOS now requires Sign On with Apple alongside other auth providers
> After this announcement, I would just remove "sign in with Google" as an option, and force all my users who previously used "sign in with Google" to set a password.

Okay, you do that. That's not a punishment to Apple, you might bounce some of your own users and is a choice you made exclusively.

> You can have only Apple sign in, but not only $competitor sign in.

If that's the antitrust argument, they just need to reword it say "and include another signin method" or logged out functionality. I just don't think thats a strong enough argument, as they aren't removing choice in any way only adding it, except to people with existing apps - like you - who will risk decimating all their own users.

rolltiide··on iOS now requires Sign On with Apple alongside other auth providers
It would only be an antitrust issue if they said they couldnt show other sign in options anymore.

This is cleverly done and is an option with a lot less friction that needs to leverage its potential network effects.

rolltiide··on Coronavirus outbreak makes lobsters so cheap that sellers face a fatal blow
I think you, and others, misread what I wrote. I said they were always deemed tasty, but people covet them as even more tasty luxuries because they are expensive. As opposed to the capabilities that a chef's rare experiments can achieve in a similar price range.
