rolandm··on CCPA Scam – Human subject research study conducted by Princeton University
Maybe the principal investigator Jonathan Mayer [1] should have read his own paper [2] about dark patterns. From the abstract "There is a rapidly growing literature on dark patterns [...] that researchers deem problematic" [2].

This research looks like a dark pattern to me.

rolandm··on Was German unification inevitable?
Not in the trillions, but more like "25-40 billion euros or $31-50 billion" https://www.dw.com/en/how-kohl-and-gorbachev-sealed-the-deal...

Helmut Kohl negotiated a very good deal. Money was not an issue for Germany but speed and total withdrawl of the Russian troops. Germany would have paid much more. A year later and it might be too late for the reunification (Gorbachev was kicked out of the Kremlin).

rolandm··on Ask HN: How do you get into a niche field like SAP development?
Study the new SAP systems like SAP HANA, SAP S/4HANA, or SAP Fiori. SAP moved from R/2 -> R/3 -> SAP ERP -> SAP S/4HANA. It is always easier to jump on the new wave than try to compete with experts with decades of experience in a system.

rolandm··on Outbox, The Startup That Digitizes Your Postal Mail, Raises $5 Million Series A
Earth class mail had exactly the same idea 2004 and got 21.4M funding [1]. A documentary from 2008 about them: http://www.hulu.com/start-up-junkies . They later fired the founder and changed from B2C to B2B [2]: “As many a tech startup has discovered, though, a great idea doesn't always make a good business. Digitizing all that paper proved hugely expensive, and Earth Class Mail couldn't make its business pay.” [1] http://www.crunchbase.com/company/earthclassmail [2] http://blog.oregonlive.com/siliconforest/2011/01/earth_class...
