rogeryu··on Firefox exploit found in the wild
You can disable the PDF reader quite easily:

rogeryu··on Insufficient Sleep Is a Public Health Epidemic
Artificial blue light does not contain UV light, and does not influence melatonin.
rogeryu··on From a million miles away, NASA camera shows moon crossing face of Earth
Probably because that's the Dark Side of the Moon?

rogeryu··on Mac at Work: IBM Launches Services to Deploy Macs at Scale to the Enterprise
They provide services. You are a big company and need a software system that can manage your oil refinery or factory - they make it. They do hardware, but much less than before. Their DB2 database is a big competitor to Oracle db. They do cloudlike services, but not as a public service available to anyone.

Their competitors are Oracle, SAP and big consultancy firms. Think big budgets.

rogeryu··on Hacker shows he can locate, unlock and remote start GM vehicles
Imagine this: smart kid creates app that let horns of multiple cars in parking lot honk like in a symphony. Even more fun: someone walks over that parking lot, and you follow them with honks from different cars. Man, I would love to see that!
rogeryu··on Hacker shows he can locate, unlock and remote start GM vehicles
It's kids paradise. If you're smart enough, you can create your own symphony in the local parking lot. Starting up all those engines will be fun too!
rogeryu··on Athens 1944: Britain’s dirty secret
Well you could dispute that for young people living in Greece right now, without any future, with a huge debt that will last for generations. Former Eastern European states now part of the EU may have a future that is a lot brighter. Even if people there are poorer than the average Greek right now, they are on the rise, and the Greek are falling down. Given a basic level of wellfare, I know what I would prefer, knowing where you came from.
rogeryu··on Athens 1944: Britain’s dirty secret
I think he doesn't have to do that. It's not a comparison he needs to prove for me. Not that I agree, but it shows his feelings, and it probably shows the sentiment of many Greeks.
rogeryu··on Show HN: My SSH server knows who you are
> If the server doesn't know that key, then SSH tries the next one. You can enumerate all of someone's keys this way (like this SSH server does)

If you have five keys, and the second is the one that's needed, doesn't that mean that only the first two keys are sent?

Anyway, this is very good to know, and I'm going to take action to make this more secure.

rogeryu··on The Fastest Blog in the World
If you don't want that, make your own Google page. Create a form with get-action to google.com, parameter q, host this on your own site or even locally, and you've got that fast simple page that doesn't register your typing.
rogeryu··on 96 MacBook Pro’s in one server rack
The trick - having only one connector. For normal macbooks they will probably have multiple USB-C (for power and other stuff), maybe one USB-B, a card reader, video etc.
rogeryu··on SSL tools we wish we'd known about earlier
My favorite tool is the Calomel Firefox addon. https://addons.mozilla.org/nl/firefox/addon/calomel-ssl-vali...

The article links to https://badssl.com/, which shows a list of links to good and bad configurations. Calomel gives more details about what is right and wrong, and sometimes surprises with its rating.

rogeryu··on 96 MacBook Pro’s in one server rack
4G tethering using your mobile! It's probably a lot faster as well, and no stupid company restrictions and logging.
rogeryu··on 96 MacBook Pro’s in one server rack
That USB type-C strategy is for a laptop that is thinner than the Macbook Air. I don't think they will pull that trick for the normal Macbook Pro.
rogeryu··on In Iraq, I raided insurgents. In Virginia, the police raided me
This reminds me of Sandra Bland who was put into jail for three days because of improperly signaling a lane change. Police in the US is totally out of control it seems.
rogeryu··on Ask HN: Why does Oracle keep VirtualBox alive?
This is probably true, but VB is not servergrade VM software I believe. In those cases you use Xen or VMware. Virtualbox is for the desktop.

First, I think many engineers at Oracle use it to test software locally without having to fallback on complex solutions. Second, it's probably a small development team, maybe three or four FTE, and how much money is that for a company like Oracle? VMware licenses are probably more expensive.

rogeryu··on NASA’s Kepler Mission Discovers Bigger, Older Cousin to Earth
> At least 25% of it will be over IPv6!

We probably will need IPv10 to connect all the dots in the sky!

rogeryu··on Can we colonize the moon?
Which will only work in space, not on a planet. That will simply require too much energy, and it will be too complex to build.
rogeryu··on Today, 30 years ago, Commodore introduced the Amiga
> I am so going to this! My 13yo son is going to be so excited to attend.

I suppose you mean your 13yo inner child?

rogeryu··on Hacking Team: Remote Access Trojan for Android
RCSAndroid capabilities include screen capture; clipboard monitoring; Wi-Fi password collection (including grabbing passwords sent over Wi-Fi for applications like Skype, Facebook, Twitter and so on); recording from the microphone; message collection; location collection; use the front and back cameras; and contact collection (again from a variety of services).

Wiretap wasn't forgotten. RCSAndroid, Trend Micro says, also has a hook into the mediaserver system service to get voice calls in real time.

Trend writes that the config file suggests RCSAndroid's been in the wild since 2012, with a now-defunct command and control server in the USA.

rogeryu··on Sandra Bland arrest video has continuity problems, anomalies
It can be edited for public use. And for good propaganda of course. ;-) But when in court, I hope they have the digitally signed version. If that one gets lost somehow, that would be bad.
rogeryu··on Sandra Bland arrest video has continuity problems, anomalies
I didn't know you can downvote here...
rogeryu··on Sandra Bland arrest video has continuity problems, anomalies
The third video shows cars disappearing. It looks like they want to hide something. I see several episodes where nothing happens, no cars and no people in view. Why not copy those moments? Or is this done on purpose by an editor who cannot disobey an order (to make parts of the video disappear), but can sabotage the result by playing stupid?
rogeryu··on Show HN: Zero – an HTML5 game about modular arithmetic and prime numbers
I don't get this game. The explanation is so short and I have no idea what happens next when I click on another number.
rogeryu··on Finnish study: Smoking and drinking coffee might prevent Parkinson's disease
Does anyone smoke coffee? I usually don't go any further than just smelling.
rogeryu··on Ham or Spam? Gmail Not to Be Trusted for Important Mail
I use Gmail for some private mail, and use it at work. I always check my spam folder and keep it empty. It works for 99%, but some mails from advertising networks (which I subscribe to professionally) get marked as spam even though I have marked them "not spam" many times. For personal mail I haven't had much problems.
rogeryu··on Facebook’s Blu-Ray Powered Cold Storage Data Center
Look at mdisc - it should last a lifetime and longer.
rogeryu··on Greece to Default on $1.73B IMF Payment
Greece will not leave the EU over this, and doesn't have to. Really nobody wants this. The Greek don't want that, and no EU country wants that. This is not going to happen.

I'm a EU citizen - from a rich country, without much corruption, and I don't see how we can change the Greek society within a reasonable period. I don't know what will happen, but I hope the EU will help Greece with many billions to help local people to survive.

This is a hard lesson for the Euro countries. They shouldn't have Greece let in, as well as several other countries. That's hindsite, but as we let them in, it's our responsibility as well. If you invite a country in which has a corrupt system, where not paying taxes is allowed on a massive scale, then you invite problems.

rogeryu··on Google hacked account
So what happens when you lose that?
rogeryu··on Google hacked account
Great - but that only works if you have access to the account. Otherwise I could take over any account by simply paying? I guess Google is smarter than that.
