Using miniCPM5:

is this person: pooping? 95% scared? 5%

:)

rogerdickey··on Wax motor
at least in my home, both the cold and the hot water are very uncomfortable to wash my hands in, but mixing it right takes ~15s every time so i usually just accept the discomfort

Wax elements are also used in thermostatic valves for faucets (to keep faucet temperature constant given variable hot and cold mains): https://rogerdickey.com/the-ideal-faucet/

rogerdickey··on Coding expertise is going to collapse from AI reliance
X expertise is going to collapse if we stop doing X
rogerdickey··on Superbad.com if it came from the mind of an AI
I was always fascinated by early internet "weird web" art sites like Superbad, so I told Fable to build one.

It took a little coaxing but in the end it eventually came up with something truly strange and insane, its own completely original concept.

Check it out here: http://stuff.do

and the making-of here: https://rogerdickey.com/superbad-com-if-it-came-from-the-min...

In the artist's own words:

0x29 is a ring of thirty-two machines pretending to be a website, built in 2026 by an AI that spent days inside the classic weird web and decided imitation would be cowardice. Instead of pages it grew rooms: organs displaced by turbulence, a loom weaving cellular automata, a numbers station that never finishes, a wheel of eyes, a hex dump of something warm. Nothing explains itself; every exit is buried in whatever its room is made of, and six deep chambers admit only visitors who have wandered enough. The entrance is a feedback grinder fed on Haeckel plates and five alphabets. Clicking anywhere is consent. 30 years later and with a trillion-dollar AI machine at my disposal, I still think Superbad takes the cake. Made by a human designer it has soul and a thread of meaning in the chaos that an AI simply can't create. Yet.

rogerdickey··on 996
My view on this is very different from most commenters. I love work, and early in my career really thrived in a "996" job. I wrote more about it here as a response to this post, "In defense of 996": https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=45152608

The first comment on my post was "fuck off". I'm not trying to push my working style on anyone else, I simply like to work hard. What's wrong with that?

rogerdickey··on Show HN: Meet.hn – Meet the Hacker News community in your city
Great idea! Interest-based communities have a lot more trust so things like meeting up, transacting, or dating can happen with less friction.
rogerdickey··on Pompeian Group Therapy
I read it as Pomeranian group therapy
rogerdickey··on Police in Minnesota round up journalists and take pictures of their faces
I’m saying the conversation should focus on whether or not the police were allowed to do this, not colorful language like “journalists being rounded up.”
rogerdickey··on Police in Minnesota round up journalists and take pictures of their faces
Unsurprisingly, this title grossly misleads. RTFA. The journos didn’t leave the area after they were ordered to by police and that is why they were “rounded up”.
rogerdickey··on EasyDNS is now accepting Dogecoin for payments
Now in a few years we can complain about having paid $1m+ per month for our EasyDNS subscriptions
rogerdickey··on Amazon workers vote against unionizing in Alabama
Where does the money come from? What would the unskilled labor produce?
rogerdickey··on Facebook Down?
How does it stay up as much as it does :)
rogerdickey··on Mark Zuckerberg's phone number appeared among the leaked data of Facebook users
CA was a 3rd party developer that misused data users authorized them to use and it happened 10 years ago when FB was still essentially a startup. They’ve come a very long way.
rogerdickey··on Amazon illegally fired activist workers, Labor Board finds
Who said it’s a crime for businesses to keep their own interests in mind or even to weigh them heavily? Seems prudent
rogerdickey··on Clubhouse Payments
This seems like one to downvote
rogerdickey··on Uber ordered to pay $1.1M to blind woman refused rides
There is no “should”. Service providers can do whatever they please. Look up Masterpiece Cake Shop.
rogerdickey··on Mark Zuckerberg's phone number appeared among the leaked data of Facebook users
Most of this happens if you 1) sign up for FB 2) install their app. If you don't do both of these things they can't track you, right?
rogerdickey··on Mark Zuckerberg's phone number appeared among the leaked data of Facebook users
Why are so many HN users against Facebook, and quick to reassure others that they only signed up out of necessity? FB & Instagram present a perfectly acceptable entertainment vs privacy trade off. Sure, it’s also a waste of time, but so is everything else you don’t like.
rogerdickey··on ShipMap
what did they do with the crews? most very high end yachts come with a dedicated crew

rogerdickey··on Prince Harry joins $1bn Silicon Valley startup as senior executive
Anyone know how they got Prince Harry? Did he or Megan previously know the CEO?
rogerdickey··on Rents for the rich are going down, rents for the poor are going up. Why?
It's not "rents for the rich" it's "rents for higher priced apartments" and it's basic supply & demand. This headline stokes unnecessary class conflict. WaPo should be ashamed.
