rogercosseboom··on Did Y Combinator send out the acceptance/ rejection emails yet?
That's such a nice way to put that, thanks :)
rogercosseboom··on Did Y Combinator send out the acceptance/ rejection emails yet?
Are there cases of people who've been rejected w/ an idea and later accepted w/ the same?
rogercosseboom··on Charging for things on the web
I wish I could find the source, but its documented somewhere on The Nets that this is roughly what they make– perhaps a bit less.

I think this is what he meant: http://bookcoverarchive.com/images/books/jane_eyre.large.jpg
rogercosseboom··on Mental Model for Minimal Viable Products
one question on mvp's though: is an mvp the smallest item that allows you to judge traction, or the smallest product that solves the hair-on-fire problem?

Asked in a different way: is an mvp a bucket of water or a survey that asks 'sign up to our mailing list if you'd like us to build a bucket of water?' I'm not being facetious I'm actually confused on this point…

rogercosseboom··on Sergey Brin’s Resume In 1996. Before Founding Google
While reading this all I can think of is... would pg & co. fund Sergey if he applied to YC?
rogercosseboom··on Apple lost another prototype iPhone, again
They updated the article after contacting the bar's owner and receiving comment from him.
rogercosseboom··on G+ invite open again
I think what the comment was referring to was that, in Google's view, the social market is becoming more and more important to the greater internet community. Not having a viable product in this space could cost Google dearly later– specifically in those areas you sarcastically mentioned.
rogercosseboom··on All NeXT Inc.'s Plant Lacks Is Orders (1990)
I love the overtones of this article indirectly (but surely not accidentally) refer to self-replicating machines ala Von Neumann:

rogercosseboom··on Natalie Portman - Scientist

I also had the same issue, oddly enough it got worse as i got more accustomed to the program. I think mainly because I was visually counting the boxes from the right to left.

maybe instead of boxes use a numbering or finger image? But yeah definitely some differentiation between the 'f' key and the 'space' key

rogercosseboom··on Original Macintosh Business Plan: July 12, 1981
I love how the product line pages look almost exactly like the current product line pages at store.apple.com

Consistency consistency consistency.

rogercosseboom··on The Social Network Bust: What I learned from my job interview with Facebook
Having read many similar accounts of interviewing at Google I can't help but believe the two companies share the same hiring sentiment: they'd rather leave more qualified engineers on the table than risk hiring a bad one. If I were the OP I wouldn't (and it doesn't seem like he does) feel bad about it but instead use it as a determinant in viewing one's granularly-acquired skillset in contrast to the skillset involved in working at one of these gigantic companies. Its a good perspective to have regardless of if you end up working for them or not.

rogercosseboom··on Ask HN: How do you find a cofounder if you want to start a company
I was actually in the same situation as you- unfortunately I'm out of school and seperated from the most important source of feedback/support/cofounders: the people in your program.

Anyone can be a cofounder. Most often its friends, or friends of friends, but sometimes its an interested professor(MIT has a long history of this) or random people in your study group that show an aptitude in the field. I would strongly advise you to approach everyone with your idea, explaining what you hope to achieve and the possible setbacks/technical hurdles to come. Ask everyone you know if they know anyone who does something similar. If they come back at you with a few good ideas, or approach the problem from an angle you haven't thought of, then you have a candidate. Eventually you'll find someone as enthusiastic and interested in the area as you, which is perhaps the most important trait, and its a good indication of the type of person who will stick it out and help you change the world.

rogercosseboom··on Liquid Water Recently Seen on Mars
When I was in the 8th grade and I wrote my first program in BASIC I came home from school and told my mother "I want to be a programmer- like the guy in Jurassic Park, but not fat."

I'd say I was about 75% successful

rogercosseboom··on Liquid Water Recently Seen on Mars
Reminds me of one of my favorite passages from Jurassic Park:

"Think about oxygen. Necessary for life now, but oxygen is actually a metabolic poison, a corrosive glass, like fluorine. When oxygen was first produced as a waste product by certain plant cells some three billion years ago, it created a crisis for all other life on earth. Those plants were polluting the environment, exhaling a lethal gas. Earth eventually had an atmosphere incompatible with life. Nevertheless, life on earth took care of itself."
