rogerallen··on Zig's new bitCast semantics and LLVM back end improvements
Same as it ever was.
rogerallen··on US v. Heppner (S.D.N.Y. 2026) no attorney-client privilege for AI chats [pdf]

rogerallen··on Be careful: chatting with AI about your case is discoverable
In United States v. Heppner, Judge Rakoff of the Southern District of New York ruled that written exchanges between a criminal defendant and generative AI platform Claude were not protected by attorney-client privilege or the work product doctrine.
rogerallen··on Open Letter to Google on Mandatory Developer Registration for App Distribution
I wonder if putting this choice on the user would be most appropriate?

People fearful about being scammed should buy a phone with a hardware lock to prevent it from ever accepting sideloads--no option to go to dev mode, ever. You could even charge more for the extra security.

People who want the freedom to sideload can choose to buy a phone without the extra hardware security feature.

rogerallen··on Sun Position Calculator
This is really, really well done. I’m very impressed by all the features implemented here and I wish I could look over the source. I wonder how it is done.
rogerallen··on Fix HDMI-CEC weirdness with a Raspberry Pi and a $7 cable

rogerallen··on Show HN: Kent Dybvig's Scheme Machine in 400 Lines of C (Heap-Memory Model)
Can someone give more info on the relevance of this particular code?
rogerallen··on Privacy Badger is a free browser extension made by EFF to stop spying
They could at least fall back to "context sensitive" ads like you suggest.

Also, don't try to make me feel guilty for having an "ad blocker". I don't specifically block ads, instead I have a "tracking me without my consent blocker".

rogerallen··on Exploring Trichromacy through Maxwell's Color Experiment (2023)
Very nice article. I don’t think I was aware of these experiments, but maybe I’ve forgotten?

Apologies if I just missed this, but is there a link to Maxwell’s original findings?

rogerallen··on Marble Blast Gold – Webapp
Wish it worked on mobile and used the xyz accelerator...
rogerallen··on Mark Klein, AT&T whistleblower who revealed NSA mass spying, has died

rogerallen··on Ask HN: Is it just me, or does the job market for IT seem bad today?
Would like to hear more about this. I thought there was an effort to adjust this...did that fail?
rogerallen··on Everything I know about the fast inverse square root algorithm

rogerallen··on Linearly interpolating pixels that are in a gamma encoded color space

rogerallen··on Office of the President of Mongolia: Top to bottom text on the web
I wish it was easy to render western text to multiple columns that are fit to the screen. Reading like a multicolumn paper newspaper and scrolling horizontally. I think this shows that it would be pleasant to read text on the web this way.
rogerallen··on Only one pair of distinct positive integers satisfy the equation m^n = n^m
What you say can be true, but it sets a certain bar for clearly conveying the message artistically. I would say that bar was not met in this case. I found it so distracting I was compelled to go off to Desmos to draw it myself.
rogerallen··on Only one pair of distinct positive integers satisfy the equation m^n = n^m
Egads, why hand-draw a graph like that when there is Desmos?

rogerallen··on Twitter's Recommendation Algorithm
I said I despised the algorithm, I did not say I hated Twitter. Now I at least know why I hate it.

Yes "Following" is what I use. The reason I use it is because of this algorithm that thinks I could possibly want 50% tweets that make me "engaged^H^H^H^H^Hraged". To me, that is a ridiculous mixture.

I'm happy they have a "Following" and I sure hope they keep it, but I will not be surprised if it goes away.

rogerallen··on Twitter's Recommendation Algorithm
"Today, the For You timeline consists of 50% In-Network Tweets and 50% Out-of-Network Tweets on average, though this may vary from user to user."

I have spent significant effort creating a network and there you go choosing to ignore my efforts by putting in 50% of crap-I-don't-want-to-see.

That is why I despise your algorithm.

rogerallen··on Secretary Granholm to announce major scientific breakthrough by DOE [video]
https://youtu.be/LJ4W1g-6JiY explains the difference between Qplasma and Qtotal. I hope this presentation will be as forthright.
rogerallen··on An account was suspended
My twitter evolutionary art bot @tweegeemee is going through a fiasco like this, but I don't have nearly the same presence as Ben.

The account was suspended for 10 days and I'm still trying to get the app (separately suspended) that runs it unsuspended...

They must be going through some kind of crazy time over there between nation-state trolls, the Musk fiasco and the run-up to midterm elections. Yeesh.
